I love how you used the mindmap to clear up all the important questions before starting work, this is a great way to avoid any misunderstandings and wasting time/money later on.
Thank you, the biggest issue I have to starting any project is knowing were to start. This video has had a big impact on my learning progression. Again Thank you
I just started my own lil' design company and my biggest weakness is organization. You just called me out and made me actually decide to get Twello and work extensively on that aspect. Very good video and you know what you are doing!
My mate & I have just started our own Web Design business &a we've just had our first client. Creating a workflow from the ground up has been challenging but your vids have honestly been so helpful!! Thank you!!
I used to do my sites all by hand, all of it in HTML and that was a while ago. I am a graphic designer that _wants_ to learn the new way to do things, this has really helped me out, as I do this all in my head and on paper, but it's really helpful to see it structured from the ground up. Thanks for this series I am following at my own pace as I have an autoimmune illness, so this really helps!
At the beginning I planned to make wordpress web with nice random theme, but I found Your tutorial "part 1" and now I'm doing page from scratch with You. You inspired me. :) Thanks
I'm trying to build a website with Jekyll, and looking for tutorials I found your video series. Seems promising so far. There are two things I'd add though to the things said in this video: - Clients also often look for terms of service. They want to know how you license your work and so on. In fact when I consider hiring an artist or buying a product I look at three things: * Products / examples of work - generally information about the thing I want to buy. * Pricing - self explanatory * ToS - who gets to own what, what will happen if something goes wrong, etc. As a client, I don't care much about testimonials, because anyone can generate testimonials that look believable, are even verifiable, but don't say anything about how I will be served, since obviously the website only lists the best testimonials, not the average / negative ones. Unless I actually see a testimonial that says "We've run into some problems, but here's how we solved them"... that sort of testimonial would be at least useful. - Second thing I'd add is about the 80% thinking 20% executing ratio. I'll have to see if you address it in the further videos, but when developing things it's often a good idea to prototype a lot. And that is basically a sort of "execution that helps you think". So it does increase the amount of work you do, but makes your decisions that much more likely to be right. My approach to developing stuff goes usually like this: 1) Get a basic idea of what you want to do. (thinking) 2) Prototype and see if the basic idea actually works. (working) 3) Refine the idea or discard it if it doesn't work. (thinking) 4) Implement the idea fully. (working) So I'm not fully buying into the 80%/20% ratio ;)
Putting my comment here in part #1 just to encourage everyone to watch this show. Travis, you are a *ROCKSTAR*. Thanks for this awesome series and your hard work to bring your knowledge to us. My kindest regards from Germany to wherever you are located...
Brilliant introduction to starting a web project. The analysis and conceptual design is what I find the hardest to do because I don't really know how to properly assess requirements or have had real difficulty in eliciting the information from a client.
Thank you so much! I landed here firstly to learn how to build a responsive website from scratch, but truth is: I haven't really thought about what I wanted and planed it correctly in the first place. You helped me review my goals and ways to achieve them. I am definitely keep watching this series and liking each one of them. Great job there. Again, thank you so much for clarifying things. Also: Trello is a great tool indeed.
Travis! I learned more with you in this tutorial than I have learned through all other methods COMBINED. I am so stoked to have found this tutorial series that honestly, I can hardly contain myself. See you in the subsequent tutorials. G
Exactly what I was looking for. Completely organized method of doing things. Not starting writing code hoping the audience knows what's going on. Great video and looking forward to the learn a lot through the full series.
Thank you for sticking to the "marketing" for this first video. This applies to all projects/products with a customer on the other end really. A lot of the time, people do not put enough empathy (as you phrased it) into the product, so thank you for voicing this in the start! :)
Thank you so much for this. My confusion cloud is clearing up. I know I have to get an expert to get it all done. But, now I know how to guide the guy along the path I have planned out. It will serve my purpose, and it will be easier for my experts to know exactly what I am asking for!
Hi am working as an architect in Bangalore India, I really liked the way you started the process, its similar to the design process what we follow, when designing some space for our clients, understanding the users requirement and building around it. I am a bit skeptic of the later part, when the coding will be involved, hope I could follow you on that also :)
THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN SEARCHING ON ! live as a programmer for almost two year, i really want to make something out of my ideas. But i dont know where to start from. I just know how to code. Thank you very much travis ! I will be your patronize as soon as my business gone stable.
I'm really excited for this! You're doing a great job Travis, imho you really have a gift for making these guide. Keep it up, and I'm sure this'll be one of the biggest dev channels on youtube one day!
I love these series of tutorials. I think Travis gets to the real deal of what needs to be learned - and that is what I like. Thanks a ton for your knowledge, guidance, and most of all not going "off-topic" in your videos.. I will be watching the rest of the DEVTIPS series
I just wanted to say a big thank you for this video which I have just come across today as I am trying to learn coding. The information out there is so much but to have someone to tell you here are some good practices from scratch is so invaluable. This video has been so super helpful already. THANK YOU.
One thing I've noticed after going back and rewatching this series is the fact that you mention we'll be using Trello a lot throughout this project but I have yet to see it used again, unless I have missed another point in time where you have used it? I am very interested in not only seeing the pre-organization but also the organization that comes during the project as opposed to before it. That is where I personally struggle and I'm sure a lot of other developers can and would agree. Thanks again for such a great series and an awesome channel!
I think that you bring some really great points about the start of the design process. Planning is crucial to ensuring that the client will be happy with the results you produce.
Hello Travis. Thank you for your work. I have been learning HTML, CSS and some Javascript, and only have a vague idea of how to plan a site. I'm glad I found your video, which I enjoyed, and I'm excited to continue the rest of the series. Thanks!
"If you dint have a plan, you don't have a destination and you can never arrive"!! Great stuff men i usually go straight into wire frames this is a nice first step. Thank you very much!!
Way late to the party. Just found the channel and going through the vids from the beginning (plus watching new content). I must say that, while all of your videos have been extremely helpful, this epitomizes why I keep watching. It's not just about coding and a quick, easy solution. You take time to explain as well as share expertise right from the field. I echo words already said by others. This helped me to slow down and think further on a current project I'm working on during my self-teaching journey. Thanks for this.
No problem William Merussi. I'm glad you like that saying. That idea has always resonated with me. It's important to define at the outset what your goals are. What does success look like??
Trello is what I've been looking seeking for so long! It's literally so simple and easy, yet extremely helpful - especially for multiple projects. Thanks!
Only on the first video but I'm excited to see the rest! Your thoughts really helped to solidify a lot of things for me. I was already using Trello but I thought that the inordinate amount of time that I spend in the planning stages was a bad thing! It's great to hear your perspective and I think you're absolutely right, the ability to make a solid plan before jumping into projects is the mark of a good designer.
Great video series! I'm putting your guidelines into practice as I go along. When I was in Trello, I found that new ideas would spring to mind and I would then backtrack and update these in the mind map; as well as Trello. I could minimize this by trying to get the mind map completed first and then move on; but as you know, there's always reason to revise. I'm using FreeMind (free mind mapping tool) which has support for icons, notes, HTML views and all sorts of things. I haven't got to the stage of moving items along a workflow, like from one list to another in Trello, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Each list in Trello corresponds to a node in the mind map and each card in a Trello list is just another child node in the mind map. The great thing about this is that each node in the mind map can contain any number of child nodes and each of these can be decorated with a heap of things. One thing I found limiting with Trello (from my limited experience anyway), is that it doesn't seem like you can create sub-checklists to further define feature requirements. If you click on a checklist item, there's an option to promote it to a card; but the same can't be done with the checklist itself (not in an obvious way from what I could see). I'm tempted to move onto the next video, but have to restrain myself until this stage is completed. I can't wait though and look forward to seeing more of your tutorials. Thanks heaps :)
I don't think that it could be said enough how much planning can make or break an idea. After watching this particular tutorial, I will certainly make planning the bulk of any projects. Oh and thank you! keep on sharing this good stuff.
Man your channel is the real deal for everyone who really wanna learn something, You inspired me a lot, but as your book said "Inspiration is for amateurs" so i just jump right into this thing and start workin.
Wow, another great video from Travis! It's like having a mentor teaching you, in a very effective way. It's your way of explaining things, randomly saying funny things. You are funny. Hehehe. Also you put a lot of effort in your tutorials, that what makes them great! I can't wait to see the other videos in this series. Thankyou Travis, keep on inspiring people, you're the man! :D :)
Thanks a lot. It is really great. I am only just beginning to design web sites, and I had many questions about how to start a project. And the part one of this series is really fantastic, it is informative, helpful and it gives me a head start to web designing. And i will follow the whole series.
You are an amazing instructor! Thank you for taking it apart piece by piece! This is so helpful and this is exactly how I think. I am excited to get moving on building a quality website with you as my guide.
It was really refreshing to have a series start with a pure brainstorming episode longer than three minutes. I have been developing for many years and I am still trying to perfect my project setup process. I have not come across Trello before but it looks like something I can incorporate in to my process. Thanks for all the videos. p.s you also got me in to using sass. Thanks
Hearing that I got you into SASS puts me over the moon, I can't tell you! Trello is insanely useful. If you pause the video you can see I use it for all kinds of things: DivTips, personal projects, Career Planning, I even use it with my wife to organize our week. We literally have a Trello meeting on sunday evenings! So nerdy, I know.
This was really useful! I came here to get some coding tips, but this is more of a general approach to delivering client value, and you did a great job. Merci!
Love the video, Dev! I've installed Mind Node a couple of weeks now, really surprised to see you using it as well. Had never heard of Trello, but absolutely love it!! Downloading as we speak. Thanks for this!
Travis! Thank you so much for making this video. I have already created my own account on Trello and will be purchasing Mindnode. I find your approach to be insightful, practical, and elegant. I can't wait to learn more from your series. Thanks again!
TOTALLY in agreement about the "contact" landing page thing...I am actually turned off by sites that pop-up a sign-up box or expect me to connect immediately upon landing there. I also want to research their products, pricing, etc before I ever commit to connecting...thanks for helping me understand that I'm not being unreasonable :D
Thank you for this series. Just watched the first one and it was very informative and useful as I am about to develop my own responsive web site for the first time.
When I'm planning I typically use a pen and paper. I sketch doodles, make lists, jot down ideas for features. It can get a bit chaotic though. I'm not very good at keeping track of all my notes. Yes, I keep them in a notebook, but sometimes I rip out a page and it will generally be lost forever. That Trello tool looks really cool though! Is it mainly just good for making lists? Or can it be a good outlet for storing notes/sketches for ideas?
Thanks for sharing your process. Trello is awesome for all kinds of things. It can do attachments and also syncs with dropbox and google drive. It does lists, sure. But each card can have long-form content on it, and you can even pin the cards to a calendar. It's really versatile.
A big Thank you ...i had been searching for videos that explains the real process. Unfortunately there is not much help for a beginner. You explained everything so well.:)
I know this is an old video .. I only stumbled across your youtube channel recently ... I must say Bro you rock ... please keep up the good work .. and may god always bless and keep you in good health and spirit .....
Thanks to this playlist I can be more productive at my work! I tend to go out of scope when I was in college because of the lack of planning. Thanks again!
Wow this is awesome. Just came across your series of videos on how to do a responsive website from start to finish. I'm gonna watch the entire series. Thanks. Keep it up. This is really awesome :)
Excellent - appreciate the series and more so, this vid, where you show some Design Thinking for a website to drill down to what needs to be on a site...
Thank you a lot Travis!!! You don't imagine the goody that you bring in to my life hehe. I really love this and your way to teach! I was very upset and frustrated with the wick way I learned -nothing- now I getting back to this nice stuff again! Thank you so much!!!!
my process is first getting some inspiration from other awesome websites and then using Sublime Text as a text editor,a book to put in the plans-and Google and keep deconstructing on what I have decided on creating.Though now I realize it wasn't a pretty reliable and fast enough process to create good quality products
Hey Travis, Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your videos. You are a rockstar! They are so much better and more fun to watch than even those premium ones from TutsPlus or Lynda. I hope you keep on sharing your knowledge and expertise. Regards.
One of my hangups for years has been..how do I organise myself!? As a visual/tactile learner I L-O-V-E the tools you used in the mind mapping and the Trello thing. For my brain these will be a much better fit than the text editor/powerpoint/whatever approaches I've used in the past while trying to organise the flock o seagulls that can be my thought processes >
I love how you used the mindmap to clear up all the important questions before starting work, this is a great way to avoid any misunderstandings and wasting time/money later on.
This series is almost 2 years old. Just starting it now, im sure its still great and relevant!! thanks!
i started it too and it's not old. it helps you to organize your work, remember some patterns and improve your coding
Just looking at it too (2016)... I think it is pretty simple and still pretty relative from what I saw till now.
awesome! I am looking forward to finishing it. At least to go through it and learn more. Thanks!
oOcitizenOo for sure, alrighty. Thanks for the response.
Joel Velasquez i guess this course was helpful
Thank you, the biggest issue I have to starting any project is knowing were to start. This video has had a big impact on my learning progression. Again Thank you
Awesome. That is really great to hear!
You said it my friend! The ability to make a solid plan before making things is a sign of maturity. So glad you mentioned that!
This is probably the best tutorial I have ever seen on TH-cam (considering I haven't seen the other videos from this series). You have my respect :)
I just started my own lil' design company and my biggest weakness is organization. You just called me out and made me actually decide to get Twello and work extensively on that aspect. Very good video and you know what you are doing!

This is a top quality video, very professionally done. Not so frequent on YT.
I tremendously enjoyed this, Travis.
Thanks for watching Thierry! Your support means a lot :)
At the beginning I planned to make wordpress web with nice random theme, but I found Your tutorial "part 1" and now I'm doing page from scratch with You. You inspired me. :)
Thanks
Awesome! Good luck buddy :)
I'm trying to build a website with Jekyll, and looking for tutorials I found your video series. Seems promising so far.
There are two things I'd add though to the things said in this video:
- Clients also often look for terms of service. They want to know how you license your work and so on.
In fact when I consider hiring an artist or buying a product I look at three things:

As a client, I don't care much about testimonials, because anyone can generate testimonials that look believable, are even verifiable, but don't say anything about how I will be served, since obviously the website only lists the best testimonials, not the average / negative ones.
Unless I actually see a testimonial that says "We've run into some problems, but here's how we solved them"... that sort of testimonial would be at least useful.

thanks dev. I am a mechanical engineer/ entrepreneur and need to start building my websites to get my businesses out in the world. This helps so much!
Putting my comment here in part #1 just to encourage everyone to watch this show. Travis, you are a *ROCKSTAR*. Thanks for this awesome series and your hard work to bring your knowledge to us. My kindest regards from Germany to wherever you are located...
Planning is such an important part of building a website and is disregarded by most designers, what a great video!
Brilliant introduction to starting a web project. The analysis and conceptual design is what I find the hardest to do because I don't really know how to properly assess requirements or have had real difficulty in eliciting the information from a client.
awesome, glad this is helpful :)
Really a great intro I totally agree with you.
A good way to start is to put yourself in place of your client and their clients.
Thank you so much! I landed here firstly to learn how to build a responsive website from scratch, but truth is: I haven't really thought about what I wanted and planed it correctly in the first place. Eryc da Silva I'm glad this video influenced you to review your process and start right. That's probably the best thing you could do. That's awesome!
I was going no where while planning a company website I am building. This gave me a good start.
Awesome!
Travis! I learned more with you in this tutorial than I have learned through all other methods COMBINED. I am so stoked to have found this tutorial series that honestly, I can hardly contain myself. See you in the subsequent tutorials.
G
So true! The most important work is planning and strategizing when starting a new web design project
Hi Lisa, Thanks for watching! I hope you like the rest of the videos in this series :))
Exactly what I was looking for. Completely organized method of doing things. Not starting writing code hoping the audience knows what's going on.
Great video and looking forward to the learn a lot through the full series.
Awesome! I'm glad you like it!
Great video, can't wait to see the rest of the series!
I know! I'm can't wait!
Thanks for sharing your experience Travis.
Hey Quentin! How are you??
Thanks for stopping by and watching man, that means a lot!
I'm good, and yourself? It's a pleasure.
Think I'm going to follow through with this series, and learn from a man with the wisdom of experience.
Haha, Awesome! I hope its up to your standards ;P
I've been looking for a series that guides me through the workflow for ages, Thank you so much for making this
Absolutely! I'm so glad this was helpful!
Thank you for sticking to the "marketing" for this first video.
This applies to all projects/products with a customer on the other end really.
A lot of the time, people do not put enough empathy (as you phrased it) into the product, so thank you for voicing this in the start! :)
You are welcome, I'm glad you liked it :)
Muhammad Ilham I'm really glad this was helpful!!
Easy to understand and non-intimidating intro to building a website. Loved it.
Great setup to the rest of the tutorials! Thanks. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
E. Michael Rosales Awesome!
I'm really excited for this! You're doing a great job Travis, imho you really have a gift for making these guide. Keep it up, and I'm sure this'll be one of the biggest dev channels on youtube one day!
Dawwwwww.... thanks!
Everyone is being so nice, I'm really excited to work on part 2 tonight!
I love these series of tutorials. I think Travis gets to the real deal of what needs to be learned - and that is what I like. Thanks a ton for your knowledge, guidance, and most of all not going "off-topic" in your videos.. I will be watching the rest of the DEVTIPS series

of course! Thanks for watching :))
I love your "Strengths" talk, it helps.

Yea, we use it before each section. We've had a few hangups and some sections have spanned a few videos. But You will see it again ;)
I think that you bring some really great points about the start of the design process. Planning is crucial to ensuring that the client will be happy with the results you produce.

Fantastic!
Cool video - Love the fact that you've started off with, and emphasised, the importance of the planning process. Super!
Thanks Pat. I tried to give this the real 'start to finish' approach. I'm glad you appreciate that. :)
A thanks from AFGHANISTAN
thank you very much Travis! I was hardly stacked in the where to start option and you solved it.
thanks again!
cheers
Nice presentation on planning a web development project, getting the thought process ducks in a row! Thanks!
Thanks for watching Charley!
"If you don't have a destination you can never arrive"... So true! I wish I had heard this before. Thank you!
No problem William Merussi. I'm glad you like that saying. That idea has always resonated with me. It's important to define at the outset what your goals are. What does success look like??
Hey! I loved the first video specially emphasising on planning. Thank you. Cant wait to see what is in store in the upcoming videos :D
Trello is what I've been looking seeking for so long! It's literally so simple and easy, yet extremely helpful - especially for multiple projects. Thanks!
Trello is so great. I organize my life around Trello :)
It's definitely a great tool. I've already began moving my project planning over to it. :)
Trello should pay me for the amount of people I refer :)
Or at least give referral links so you can track the amount of people you've helped with projects
DevTips is available in a Spanish translation
This is awesome for someone who wants to start working on projects. Thank you very much.
Only on the first video but I'm excited to see the rest! Your thoughts really helped to solidify a lot of things for me. It's great to hear your perspective and I think you're absolutely right, the ability to make a solid plan before jumping into projects is the mark of a good designer.
Fantastic Emma Jones ! I'm glad you like the videos :)
Just had this video pop up on my recommended feed, glad that i watched it. Looking forward to the rest of the series :)
I hope you like it!! It's cool that TH-cam recommended it to you. Makes me happy :)
This video helped me, because i redesign my things all the time and I'm never done. It is good to plan first, think and arrive from that.
Great video series! I'm putting your guidelines into practice as I go along.

I don't think that it could be said enough how much planning can make or break an idea. After watching this particular tutorial, I will certainly make planning the bulk of any projects. Oh and thank you! keep on sharing this good stuff.

You have made me realise how disorganized I am. Thanks for that... I'm truly grateful!
Really helpful stuff Dev! You talk to the point and kept things simple, easy to understand and apply.. Thanks Dev. You Rock!! :)
Can't wait for next video! Thanks.
Thanks for the support Anes Tan I'm excited to make it (I'm outlining the script right now :)
I did start a project but was really not finding the right tools to map and organize my stuff. Your video helped me in a big way. Thanks :)
Vidyasagar Patro Awesome! I'm really glad to hear that!
Great series. Really enjoyed this episode and learned few tricks to use in my projects. Good job Travis!
Awesome Vlad! I love it when I hear things like this. It's really motivating. Thanks for speaking up!
DevTips
I think if i tried to sit my wife down with Trello to plan the week there would be one less Geek in the world :)
Mark Ellis Hahaha!
great video series travis,
i realy love it
This was really useful!
Daniel Perlin I like mind note because its fast and light. It does have some limitations for sure. But I like it for somethings - like this!
You are totally right man about the thinking stuff. I do not personally like it but it is a thing that needs to be done
I'm glad you found these videos. I hope they are helpful. Good luck!
you the best mentor I ever had...
I follow your foot steps and am making progress in the developer world.
thanks do more of this
When I'm planning I typically use a pen and paper.
I'll have to try it out!
Thanks this was really awesome I've been looking for a series like this and I'm so glad I found you. Thanks! (again)
A big Thank you ...i had been searching for videos that explains the real process. Unfortunately there is not much help for a beginner. You explained everything so well.:)
Bro. We'll done man. Looking forward to the rest of your process and thinking!
Awesome, thanks for the support bro! I'm editing the next vid right now. Goes live in 7 hours :/ clutch.
I knew a lot of basic codes in making a website but i don't know how to start.
This is exactly what I'm wanting to hear. Thanks a lot :))
John Par Awesome! I'm glad I could help!!
I believe this video was great. It made me start looking at the way that I work differently. I am recreating the church website...Great job!!
I'm a designer and this video is super useful for me. It's not just kind of theory but it's reality ;) thank you so much
Thanks DevTips this is a lot of help for those new to web development. Planning IS the most overlooked part.
Yea! I'm glad this helps you. Thanks for watching/sharing!
Thanks for this series, Travis! You really provide us with a fantastic workflow experience :)
You are more than welcome!!
Thanks Dev Tips, thanks Travis. I have share this video before it was even finished :-) . Keep on.
Dude, that's really great to hear! I've had so many projects co sour because of disorganization. In fact it is still a struggle. Keep fightin bro!
Thanks man! Stay awesome and keep making awesome videos!

Excellent - appreciate the series and more so, this vid, where you show some Design Thinking for a website to drill down to what needs to be on a site...
Brilliant video man! Couldn't have asked for any better :)
Thank you very much Devtips > actually "Travis" your videos are very HELPFUL i appreciatie your work very much
Thank you a lot Travis!!! You don't imagine the goody that you bring in to my life hehe. I really love this and your way to teach! I was very upset and frustrated with the wick way I learned -nothing- now I getting back to this nice stuff again! Thank you so much!!!!

Great video. Love the mind mapping and organising tools you used
Organization is key! I'm glad you tapped into that :)
Wow, i'm so pumped for this!
Yeaaaaaaahhhhhh...
(whispered softly in your ear)
I don't know the reason, I just Like this man
my process is first getting some inspiration from other awesome websites and then using Sublime Text as a text editor,a book to put in the plans-and Google and keep deconstructing on what I have decided on creating.Though now I realize it wasn't a pretty reliable and fast enough process to create good quality products
Hey Travis,
Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your videos. You are a rockstar! They are so much better and more fun to watch than even those premium ones from TutsPlus or Lynda.
I hope you keep on sharing your knowledge and expertise.
Regards.
Thanks Lilian Chisca That's really encouraging. I have no plans on stopping any time soon :)
You are absolutely right, plan is everything in a project, thanks for this awesome sharing! This is very very helpful!
I'm really glad you are finding it helpful!! Thanks for watching :)
Thank you Travis! This is the exact thing I was looking for!
One of my hangups for years has been..how do I organise myself!? As a visual/tactile learner I L-O-V-E the tools you used in the mind mapping and the Trello thing. For my brain these will be a much better fit than the text editor/powerpoint/whatever approaches I've used in the past while trying to organise the flock o seagulls that can be my thought processes >
thank you sir!
