Niflheim其義為「冰之國」也是「霧之國」(Mist-home)。在北歐神話裡Niflheim是個終年寂寒、日夜幽暗、充滿著濃霧、冰凍寒冷的地域。
在世界末端深淵Ginnungagap的北邊是Niflheim。而和Niflheim隔著深淵相對的是「火之國」Muspelheim。Niflheim又被稱為Helheim (海姆冥界)，就是「地獄」;也是「山海經」裡描述遠古世界之初中所指的北方幽冥之界。死亡之國，只有亡者的靈魂會來到這裡。
Niflheim means "Ice Country" and also "Mist-home". In Norse mythology, Niflheim is a place that is cold all year round, dark day and night, full of thick fog, and freezing cold.
North of Ginnungagap in the World's End Abyss is Niflheim. And facing Niflheim across the abyss is the "Land of Fire" Muspelheim. Niflheim is also known as Helheim (Helm Underworld), which means "hell"; it is also the northern netherworld referred to in the beginning of the description of the ancient world in "Shan Hai Jing". In the kingdom of the dead, only the souls of the dead will come here.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
