  • This video explains the synthesis of pyrimidine synthesis from the metabolic intermediates. Pyrimidine biosynthesis involves condensation of CO2 with glutamine and further condensation with aspartate. Pyrimidine synthesis pathway involves some important enzymes carbomylphosphate synthetase II, aspartate transcarbomylase, UMP synthase, thymidylate synthase. Pyrimidine synthesis is one of the high yield topic for usmle.

Whoever watching this don't confuse synthase with synthetase. Synthase enzyme doesn't require energy to form its product but synthetase requires energy.
So it is **ctp synthetase** which convert utp to ctp not **synthase** .

Great point ! few scholars worldwide know that difference ! BTW a water molecule required for the ATP hydrolysis is missing in the equation !

Thanks so much Professor. Your videos help me lot. However, I'm not clear about the pyrimidine metabolism. Please do you have videos on pyrimidine metabolism?

00:58 An exception for the cytoplasmic enzymes involved in the De Novo biosynthesis of pyrimidines is the dihydro orotate dehydrogenase (DHORD) ; which is a mitochondrial enzyme !
