Paul Steinhardt is a true genius. It is rare for someone in his line of endeavors to be part of creating a major aspect of cosmology that has become part of orthodoxy and then reevaluating his belief and then pursuing a brave new conjecture. He truly thinks outside of the box.
The thing about a cyclic universe (which I find a bit seductive), HOW DO YOU RESET THE ENTROPY from cycle to cycle so that the new cycle starts out with low entropy¿¡?!
All sounds like fantasy to me, why in cosmology every observation requires a new hypothesis ?
I would not put Steinhard on the pedestal along with Galileo, Newton, Einstein and Feynman: we should not devalue the word “genius.” He would hardly agree with you either. These theories are speculative, and are targeting a single discrepancy (and not a 10% discrepancy, but that of more than 100 orders of magnitude, BTW!) _post factum,_ or, simply, tell a “just so story.” We can say with a high degree of confidence that we have a theory only when its predictions have been tested in multiple ways and shown a precise enough agreement with observations.
I have an unfathomably deep respect for his scientific integrity. He used to be one of the company of three scientists who developed the original inflation theory, after Guth came up with an amazingly elegant hypothesis of inflation, which answered so many open question in cosmology of the early Universe. However, all attempts to quantify this idea and put it down in a maths form ended up with theories where inflation cannot ever end. In other words, the theory could not stop generating ghost universes in droves. I'm using the word “ghost” technically: for example, we can sometimes get ghost particles in a gauge theory that we then get rid of by fixing the gauge, or by hook and crook, or somehow else (like, adding a new, scalar field to the standard model to get rid of a massless unobserved particle-that was the Higgs and others motivation). When other people essentially threw a white flag and contended that we'll never be able to observe whether there is really an infinite infinity of infinite universes, but maths says so, let's just assume it's alright, it was Paul Steinhardt alone who said enough of this madness is enough, dropped the whole approach on the floor and left the collaboration. In the modern academia, teeming with basilisks and tyrannosaurs, this amounts to no less than valor.
Inflation fits the puzzle so perfectly that its hard to doubt it has to have happened; I doubt there could be a better alternative. But the prolific spawning of _the infinity of unobservable whole universes_ by the theory is a sign of its breakdown. No one believes, for one, that the singularity at the centre of a black hole is _in fact_ a single point with no spatial extent at which mass-energy density is _in reality_ infinite , although such is the prediction of GR, an extremely well-tested theory. We say, well, GR just breaks down in this regime, we can't extrapolate it this far. We just don't have a theory to describe what is _really_ going on there. But the theory that spits out infinities in its _normal_ regime used to be thought of as dead on arrival. Accepting an infinity-even more so, the infinity of whole universes-as if such were the reality in itself looks surreal. And yet only Steinhard rebelled alone.
It pains me that we now look at simple integrity as bravery beyond the call of duty. This tells a lot about the disheveled state of today's academia as an institution. But it is what it is, that's the only field you can play on, you don't have to choose. Against this backdrop, Steinhard's decision to hop off the bandwagon deserves the highest respect.

Thank you very much for replying with a thoughtful comment. Words are tricky things and how to characterize “genius” kinda falls into different levels of genius. For me there is a bit of personal aesthetics being applied with regard to the term. For me “genius” is not usually measured on a pure metric of raw IQ but rather ones ability to think outside the box and exhibit novel creativity, especially that which breaks from orthodoxy (especially repressive orthodoxy). The people that you named are generally safe to be described as geniuses but each very different in their thinking process. To me Einstein’s type of genius is significantly different than say Feynman’s methodology of problem solving. Personally I find Feynman’s flamboyance a bit off putting and a lot of his work leaves me feeling that he only scratched the surface and begging for a deeper understanding. While Einstein was probably not Feynman’s intellectual equal, he probably was superior in his “solitary” creativity, so two vastly different forms of intellect.
I don’t believe that I characterized Paul’s latest thinking as a “new theory”. At best it is a novel and brave conjecture. A conjecture that breaks from orthodoxy that has “an aspect to it” that I find refreshing and interesting (principally the singular aspect of the possibly of cyclic behavior being contemplated by an insider).
There are a number of ideas that hope to explain aspects of the early universe while simultaneously dovetailing in with a smooth transition to consistency with experimental data. The thing about orthodoxy is that it can be a severe constraint on moving to the next level of understanding.
My maybe flippant application of the term “genius” to Paul is not to debase the term but rather to attribute to him a “genius” level of creativity not unlike some of the others that you mentioned. Personally I think that there is a lot more to the early universe than what is portrayed by orthodoxy. Paul is one of the brave people trying venture into more uncharted waters that may open up new vistas (though probably indirectly).
matter at the beginning is too energetic to have mass and therefore space time ceases to exists. Same happens when all the matter evaporates in the last black hole.

The idea of it makes me think of the first person ever that tried proving to other people that air is actually an object. I would think when it comes to space and time the idea has parallels.
Something that has happened throughout the history of humanity is happening again. Our universe is getting bigger. The big bang is just one in a series of big bangs that has happened in our universe.

Hi Paul, In my opinion, Robert Kuhn and Peter Getzels are not asking you the best possible questions at the beginning of their video. I think Ed Teller’s description of attending one of Einstein’s lectures hits one ‘flawed physics nail’ on the preverbal head - This video’s theme fails to understand Teller’s accurate mindset regarding Einstein! (BUT, all-n-all - You were OUTSTANDING in this interview!) (I would tend to be less latched onto a ‘cosmological constant’ concept, but I understand the more than obvious reluctances to abandon it!!) …And the excellent, but very long last question at minute 11:40 to minute 12 that Robert was asking is very difficult to answer!! … Again, this is an exceptionally enjoyable video! And I think Inverted Physics is a broad conjecture that should be explored. It might offer insight into answering Robert Kuhn’s last question!

Steinhardt and his collaborators began publishing these ideas in 2002 or there about.
A crucial detail here is that dark energy didn't suddenly pop up 9 billion years ago. Instead, it coexisted with gravity from "the beginning" (whenever that was). For the first 9 billion years since what we call the Big Bang, the universe was "compact" enough that the attractive force of gravity prevailed over the repulsive force of dark energy. But as the universe expanded, (1) the force of gravity dissipated (Newton showed that gravity falls off as the square of distance); and (2) dark energy "took over" (dark energy appears to grow as the space expands). They both still exist, but gravity is now the weaker of the two, cosmologically speaking. That's the learning in "traditional" Big Bang cosmology, and it fits with the cyclical view Steinhardt describes: Whatever drives the cycles (dimension collisions or some other phenomenon), in a cycle this far down the cycle "staircase," we would expect to see the small or "relaxed" positive cosmological constant that we now observe.
The crucial detail here is the “vacuum catastrophe,” a discrepancy between the QFT's prediction of the vacuum ground energy, which is some 10⁶⁰ to 10¹²⁰ times larger than the value matching the observed value of the cosmological constant (we use the critical factor Ω_Λ instead, because it gets rid of a term whose value is not known, but that is a technicality). Any attempt to arrive at the observed value results in tweaking constants to _subtract_ the excess. Subtracting two numbers with, give or take, 100 digits each and ending up with a value on the order of 1 is an extreme fine-tuning, suspicious far beyond plausible.
“Newton showed [....]” - as a tidbit, we may only use GR to describe the whole universe, and we do indeed (using the FLRW metric, which keeps spatial curvature constant as space expands). Newtonian gravity doesn't have a cosmological constant, the “dark energy” term, to begin with, and may not be tweaked to contain one, for space is absolute in it and separate from time, which is also absolute. It couldn't work back when the currently observable Universe had the size of a grapefruit (it would just collapse on itself _within_ space at this density, not expand _with_ space, which is impossible in Newton's treatment of space), and doesn't work now at this vast scale.

can time / energy uncertainty in quantum mechanics provide both the dark energy and gravity needed for cosmological constant? if that is case, cosmological constant expansion starts when dark energy is enough to overcome the quantum gravity?
We don't directly observe the expansion of the universe; we observe red-shifted light. Expansion is an interpretation. Accelerating expansion and dark energy is an interpretation of the greater-than-expected amount of red shifting. Cosmologists are making bold conjectures to account for the acceleration, but how has it been proved that there are no possible explanations of the greater-than-expected red shift besides accelerating expansion, that wouldn't demand such boldness?

What if the entire purpose of the universe is the development of sentient life and seeing what happens? What if the 'Grand Experiment' is to provide opportunity for Sentient Life to move on to a different plane? Variables could be different everywhere, but there would be the constant of what creates sentient life to develop (in many given ways on many planets)... this would actually explain the concept of cycles and why they occur. To become sentient all forms must pass hurdles in development, such hurdles impart certain characteristics upon a given life form and yet to continue their evolution those traits that got them to where they are must be overcome. Fascinating talk, love any talk of dark matter, dark energy. Is there any 'look' into the architecture of dark energy and how it relates to dark matter? Read a proposition awhile ago that had dark energy architecture that looked very much how our energy moves about and is built with our brains... neurological wise... anyhoo, great conversation to ponder on. Very cool how such a brilliant guy can talk and nicely explain things in a clear manor.
His explanation is just a certain version of CCC ( Conformal cyclic cosmology). The problem with this approach is that it does not explain how everything started in the first place. The collision of our world with another world of extra dimensions resulting into the big bang does not explain how the two worlds came into existence in the first place.
The reason for our becoming self-conscious, or self-aware, creatures will become apparent later on, when we begin exploring the nature of being human in greater detail. But this human self-consciousness is something quite different in nature to the reality of the Consciousness that lies behind and within everything to appear as the myriad forms in existence.
Consciousness inhabits and animates creation and its creatures not unlike the power that flows through a computer to make it work in accordance with the hardware and software of the device. By this analogy, the specific physical characteristics of a creature’s body constitute the hardware, and the programming of its mind the software.
These things are important to understand because if this conceptual ground is not firm, the model we build from here will not endure, and its potential value will be lost. What all this is pointing to is that what you really are―what we all are―is an eternal, unlimited energy source capable of creating and experiencing events. What you are is this creative source, this Consciousness. Who you are is how this Consciousness works through you to express as something unique in the world.
Powerful creative Consciousness is your true and essential nature, but of course, you experience your life through the limitations of a human body, so it may not seem that you are an all-powerful being at times, or indeed ever. By its very nature, the body exists as some ‘thing’ and is, therefore, a limitation or restriction of ‘everything else possible’, to become something specific and useful―a human being. And then it must be remembered that these bodies we inhabit are a product of Mother Earth, and have developed for good reasons. Although today there are many philosophes, theories and just sheer guesses put forward to explain the purpose of our existence, none of them fully describe or satisfactorily explain the original intention for our emergence.
Some bodies born into this world have, or will develop over time, physical or mental attributes that further alter the creative opportunities and experiences available to them in a lifetime. The influence of our national culture, the general culture of our times, and the impact of our upbringing by parents and other significant people also become major influences that can place limitations on our thinking and power. Other restrictions occur as a result of the pains we might experience in life, the emotions that often get buried in the body as a result, and the accumulating limited beliefs they then give rise to. There is also the concept of ‘karmic debt’ that will limit opportunities, and this too will be discussed later in the work.
The state of your own evolved Consciousness is another factor affecting personal power. All these things limit the opportunities you have in life, and so it can be seen that although your true nature is something quite grand, you find yourself in very limiting circumstances. But it is important to keep perspective. Your essential nature is a free and unlimited Consciousness, a potential capable of eternal creation and experience. And this Consciousness was the reality before the Universe that we know emerged.
Spirit is the essence of consciousness, the energy of the Universe that creates all things.
Each one of us is a part of that Spirit Energy - a Divine Entity. So the Spirit is the Higher Self, the Eternal Being that lives within us.
Form is the physical world: body, mind, personality. We as spiritual beings created the physical world as a place to learn. We're here to learn how to master the process of creation - to learn how to consciously channel the creative energy of spirit into physical form.

What is meant by Universe here? Is it just the observable extremeties of this material expansion? If not why not consider the portion Universe is expanding into? If it is just the observable part then what is the meaning of accelerating as speed of EM radiation in vacuum must be constant.

A great communicator saying a non-sense in a freestyle. He, like other mainstream physicists, is adapting their statements to the observations. For instance, through the JSWT, cosmologists did not expect to observe those evoluted galaxies at those redshifts. Now, they are by chance saying: "The Universe is probably older". And how does it fit to the age of the Universe acc. to the BB theory and to the isotope analysis of elements on Earth? Let's see which Omega parameter (the lambda one?) they will force into the equations. This is what their fund-based model is about: an adjustement of parameters to fit assumptions.
Step by step, they will realize that the Universe in not expanding (cosmological redshift does not mean space epansion) and that they are dealing with conjectures. It is not only about a science topic but also a political one. As long as they receive funds for this model, we are "Away From the Truth" and not Closer To.. Please interview the counterpart too.

dark energy density staying the same could mean that there is a constant gravity, different than matter, countering dark energy for cosmological constant? what might be a constant gravity in cosmos? how might quantum mechanics provide a constant gravity to counter a consistent dark energy density?
I love something Dawkins said "The whole point about modern physics is that you can't do it by common sense, that's why you need physicists" so simple and so profound since so many lay persons give "explanations" for cosmological processes or evens which are based on zero data or contain zero evidence, ie universal consciousness or a non temporal thinking being....
He would have a point if physicists could show any evidence for what they purport themselves but they too are just full of conjecture. Limiting the explanation for the universe to a select group of people trained only in empirical means and who can give no verifiable explanation themselves and are limited by the very tools they use to decipher what dark matter might be, is very short sighted and will never lead to a greater truth. Modern physics is incapable of explaining bigger truths or for verifying its own conjectures.

Interesting thought. At least Paul Steinhardt breaks away from orthodoxy and thinks outside the box. Progress is made by people like him and probably someone who is a bit of an outsider that is not a slave to orthodoxy.
A 13.7 billion year old Universe is nonsense as is abiogenesis & evolution.

We live in the Empty Space Factory. Empty space needs humans to create the next big bang, we already have the technology.
Imagine a smooth dense gas/plasma
Now if a sound wave travels through this dense plasma there will be regions of compression and rarefaction.
In areas of compression there will be more matter that will attract each other and matter in rarefaction region will start accelerating towards the dense region.
This empties out the rarefacted region to a point where the plasma converts to atomic hydrogen and allows light to travel for the first time.
this rarified region between two dense compression region has a point where the net gravity of the compression regions cancel out , but at all other points the net acceleration increases as we go towards the compression region.
So if you are sitting in this rarified region you will see everything going away from you , and the further the object the faster it's accelerating away from you.
The rarified region is so large that you don't see the compressef regions and you call this phenomenon as dark energy.
This would be a simple explanation for dark energy which is probably wrong ....would love to hear from anyone....why I am wrong.

Are we sure the observed expansion we see isn't just a local effect -- happening in our neck of the universe. As, for example, in a stream where certain areas of the current pick up speed while other areas slow down, become stagnant or even change direction.
I suppose that’s possible . But it would require abandoning the presupposition that the laws of physics are universal . And there’s just no indication of this . They are all the same wherever we look and as far back as we look

Did you know that there is no inherent illumination or luminosity in photons? “Light,” as such, cannot be found there. Photons are, perhaps, ‘packets’ of energy which have the properties of both spread-out waves and localized particles. Photons only take on the appearance of being luminous as they arise within consciousness, in our mind’s eye. It may be that photons are spread-out energy potentials that fill the immensity of space, and only take on the appearance of being a localized discrete particle of “light” when we become aware of them in consciousness, in this actualized awareness we call mind. Thus, you are the light of the kosmos. This “light” is only arising in us. The world outside of a mind is perfectly ‘dark,’ or empty, unactualized in any way. Of course, what else could it be? What would perceive it as illuminated, or as any “thing”?
All of our thoughts are the activity of consciousness, modulations of that consciousness, incarnations within that pure consciousness, rays shining from inside that consciousness. We are agents of that consciousness, emerging from within that consciousness. All there is to experience is the knowing of it, and that knowing is God’s own Self in us, living in us, the source of our life, the energy of consciousness itself.
We could say that God lives in us, since consciousness seems to have become localized in this particular body-mind. Or we could say that we live in God, since all that we perceive arises in that consciousness, including our body-mind. Thus, Jesus was right to say, “I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (John 14:10-11, 20). Both are true, and they are true of us as well. We are arising within God, and God is arising within us as well. Sometimes this is called “mutual indwelling,” the Father in the Son and the Son in the Father, also called perichoresis or co-inherence in Christian terminology.
God is the field of consciousness in which all knowing occurs, in which all thoughts and perceptions and feelings and sensations arise, like waves in the ocean. Our body-mind and its thoughts are like localizations within that consciousness, temporary manifestations of that Ultimate Reality, expressions of that consciousness, that being, that One.
God becomes veiled and hidden from our awareness when the thoughts that arise in and from consciousness believe they are something separate and discrete from the consciousness in which they are arising. The thoughts form a separate entity, a dualistic subjective ego, a separate self identity, an independent being, an “Adam/Eve,” which thinks it is apart from infinite nondual divine consciousness and Ultimate Reality. This seems to be the “Fall,” the beginning of duality and separateness and alienation from God’s Presence.
But how could thoughts be separate from the consciousness in which they have arisen? They can’t, but that is exactly what our thoughts and our self-identification with them think they are. It is a kind of psychological illusion. The thoughts take on their own separate identity apart from pure nondual consciousness, forming a self, a person, an entity, seemingly cut off from its own source and essence.
Once we look at it like this, it seems impossible, and that is because it is. Our ‘self’ is never actually separate from the source in which it arises, thoughts are never separate from the consciousness in which they emerge, the wave is not separate from the ocean. The thoughts that make up our ‘self’ are just finite actualizations or relative localizations of the infinite potential of absolute consciousness, or Divine Being, or Ultimate Reality. In Christian symbolism we call this the incarnation of God. In Buddhism it is the Dharmakaya that incarnates as the Nirmanakaya Buddha. In Hinduism it is Brahman that manifests itself as each Atman. God becomes incarnate in reality, in the flesh, embodied, in us and all things.
There is no time, no space, nowhere we can go, nowhere we can be, that will be outside of this Presence of God, outside of this consciousness, beyond the borders of God, or the Ultimate Reality. God is always present, and is Presence itself, awareness itself, consciousness itself, the “spirit of life” within us, from which we derive all being, all knowing, all our substance, every thought, every sensation. It all arises in God. This is perhaps why, in order to pierce the veil and know God directly, contemplative practices such as meditation help train us to transcend thought, to go back to the source of thought itself, beyond all thoughts of self, to recognize that from which it all arises, this pure open vastness of nondual unitive at-one consciousness.
Do you see why we cannot “think” God? Nothing that arises in consciousness as a thought will be that consciousness in which it is arising. No relative finite manifestation in consciousness can be the absolute pure infinite consciousness, even though every manifestation or relativization or actualization of that consciousness is made up of nothing other than that consciousness. God is Present even while we are trying to comprehend God, even in the midst of that very comprehension. God is what makes that attempt at comprehension even possible. God is the very field in which we are trying to know God. When we let go of the trying, the conceptualization, surrendering the thoughts that are trying to know themselves, and rest in the pure still silent open awareness of being, that is when the realization of God may dawn on us, as us.

There is only one reason to postulate dark energy, to explain the exponential expansion rate of the universe. Electricity is drawn towards potential and the universe as a whole behaves the same way. If something accelerates at a constant rate it will get faster and faster. The exponential expansion rate of the universe is what the known laws of physics would predict provided gravitational forces are not strong enough to counteract. There is no reason to postulate some new force. Do we postulate a force driving electrons through a cable?

As of our knowledge, space is 2D flat. If so, why we are living in a 3D world. Stars, planets and atoms are 3D spheres. However, black hole is 2D and thus is as flat as space also 2D. Gravity is always associated with space, and light is paired with time. When gravity is as extremely strong as one in the center of black hole, light completely disappears. Mass represents for gravity. Light as photons has no mass. So, following logics, light is not affected by gravity. However, in reality, light circles around a black hole and creates a donut or a torus. Why so?
Imagine a center of gravity creates attraction circles as a field with max acceleration rate G on its 2D plane. Gravity represents stillness. On other hand, light creates expanding circles as a field with max acceleration rate velocity of light c/second. The field of light represents for energy or perfect motion, and it creates 2D space where light can shine. The field of light, as I imagine from the logics of what we have known, a 2D plane must cross straightly with the 2D plane of the gravity field in 90 degrees. The total energy in equation E=mc^2 shows the conversion of energy between these two fields or these 2 planes. Fields of light are circles with their centers on the horizontal circle of a black hole and perpendicular to the gravitational circle or the plane of the black hole. Circles of light looking like donut ring, and black hole is the inner circle of a donut. When light energy expands, the donut ring expands and eat away the energy of black hole. So the inner circle of donut shrinks and finally disappears in the explosion of donut ring into a sphere. When the black hole eats and takes away energy of photons of light, the inner circle of donut expands. The donut ring shrinks and collapses on the black hole plate.
We live inside the donut ring and experience both the attraction force of gravity and expansion force of radiation energy of photons. Therefore, we have both mass as inertia energy and thermodynamic energy as of vibrations of atoms inside our bodies and our motions in space.

We can say a photon has no mass in our space yz but has a potential mass m1 compared to the pptential energy of zero at the center of the black hole. Therefore, blue light with higher frequencies moves closer to the center of black hole than red light does.

Dark energy as the reason why space increases between all mass is not really a mystery when you sit down and think about it.
Mass is made of energy, it takes energy to cause motion of mass, therefore energy is causing mass to move. The larger the mass, like a supermassive black hole the more energy, mass it contains, the faster it will be moving. I came up with a slow acceleration rate of 0.0000002007 inches a second that occurs to all the large bodies like stars and black holes radiating a cosmic wind of hot energetic particles. The older the massive body is the more momentum they will have built up over their lifetimes because of this slow acceleration occurring to them.
And I know, according to general relativity nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole. But Einstein's general relativity is incomplete. That's why it's unable to explain dark matter and dark energy. In reality according to my calculations supermassive black holes should be radiating high energy EM fields, and hot, invisible high energy photons, neutrinos, gamma rays, X-rays, radio, etc. All the high energy short wavelengths of invisible light. That's why they look black to optical telescopes but stick out like a sore thumb in high energy wavelengths of light. The supermassive black hole will eventually be found to be radiating energy, heat and charged particles just like a star but at much higher energies. It's rapid solar wind will always be invisible to optical telescopes. Einstein's general relativity is wrong claiming nothing, not even light can escape their gravity.
The massive galaxies extremely far away that Hubble and the James Webb discovered having high redshifts, moving away from us faster than the speed of light are old, massive galaxies with a supermassive black hole in their cores weighing more than 100 million solar masses. The older the galaxy is the faster they will be traveling away from us.
The galaxies having a supermassive black hole weighing 100 million solar masses would be more than 334 billion years old and if their mass was calculated correctly then they should only be moving relative to a standard of rest at 33,414,634 miles per hour. If the redshift indicates the galaxy is moving away from us faster than c, 186,000 mi/s then it indicates the black hole is much older than 334 billion years old and larger than 100 million solar masses.
We can determine the age of the galaxy by using the Eddington Limit, or rate at which stars and black holes are predicted to grow over time. Then use the age to velocity ratio of the supermassive black hole in our galaxy as a guide or measuring stick to determine the age of distant galaxies. I've done it. You're not going to believe it. The galaxy HD1 more than 13 billion light years away is more than 226 trillion years old.
You can also take the velocity of the distant galaxy relative to a standard of rest and can easily determine it's age. Their motion has very little to do with gravity or their mass. I've done the equations using the motion of the Milky Way galaxy moving towards the Great Attractor and got an age of 13.7 billion years old. The same equations works for our solar system. Our solar system comes out to be 4.5 billion years old using this equation. It also explains the motion pinned on dark matter. Basically, this small equation 0.0000002007 in/s explains the motion pinned on both dark matter and dark energy. Space is not really expanding. Stars and galaxies are slowly accelerating over time from their own propulsion. The older the star or galaxy, the faster they travel, at a rate of 1 mile per hour (1.61 km/h) increase in their velocity every 10,000 years.
Yes indeed, I solved the dark matter and dark energy mysteries with one simple equation. Don't bother trying to patent it. I've already published 42 books explaining all this in better detail. Every prediction in the books about gravity, motion, age of galaxies, the big bang, what the JWST would discover, like massive galaxies, some larger than the Milky Way but further than 14 billion light years away and more was spot on. Galaxies and stars have the same 10,000 to 1 ratio between their age and velocity.
I call this the Accelerated Propulsion theory because stars and galaxies slowly propel themselves over time at the same 10,000 : 1 ratio between their age and velocity.

I then measured the age to velocity ratio between 6 different satellite galaxies orbiting the Milky Way and each one had the same 10,000 to 1 ratio between their age and velocity. Dark matter and dark energy are dead. The only stars I found that didn't fit the 10,000 to 1 ratio were stars that were escaping the Milky Way at more than a million mi/h. I suspect they were possibly flung out of a multiple star system. More research has to be done to confirm this for sure.
