How to make a long Furby

  • A long Furby is equally unsettling and adorable. If you're like me, you just had to have one! This video is how I made my own long Furby using a "vegan" faceplate, meaning I did not buy a real Furby toy to lengthen. Instead, I purchased a replica faceplate on Etsy.

Tip for gluing plastic to things: glue works best on rough surfaces as it has more "tooth" to grab onto, so if you feel like your plastic is prretty smooth, it helps to sand it, or even lightly scor it with a craft knife in extreme cases, to ensure the glue forms the strongest bond it can. I learned this from videos on miniature building and kitbashing, but I think it also applies to pretty much all crafts so long as they involve both plastic and glue.

I sewed the front an back head pieces together on my machine, then hand sewed the ears on!
Alternatively you can turn the ears inward and sandwich them between the front and back head pieces, then sew it all together in one go. The latter is a technique I used in my Glow Furby tutorial 😄

That’s going to vary depending on which materials you have already on hand. If we assume you have some sewing “basics” such as scissors, pins, needle and thread etc then my estimated breakdown is this:
      3’ spine $17
      Mega 3D faceplate $20
      Poly-fil $15
      *Fur $15-75
(*you need about 1/2yd of main color, 1/4yd of contrast. The price of faux fur depends upon quality and the seller)

I just have one question about the process and how it would effect my work if I changed this aspect: would it be easier to bypass making the head piece a separate part of the body that would be sewed on later? Like, if I were to trace out the pattern but then elongate the ends to be the length of the desired long furby length instead of making the head and THEN the body, would that not be advisable?

I’m not going to lie I procrastinated on this project due to personal reasons, but I’m finally sewing and I haven’t gotten to the stuffing part yet but so far elongating it only had the issue of lining up if you don’t pin the fabric down well enough (which just means you need to re-pin it before sewing) and I have the same fur fabric you have! So far so good, we’ll see if it turns out a bit wonky once it’s all together!

I opened my pattern in a Word document and used the scale to size the pattern.
Alternatively, if your pattern is close to the right size... say just a bit too small, you can add extra seam allowance around the pattern and it will be close to the correct size!

Heard some sewing machines had issues with stitching together the longer fur.
For your sewing machine, did you just treat it as sewing any other type of fabric, or did you have to tweak some of the settings?
