They were allowed to wear those numbers for the first couple of years in the NFL, then the NFL made them change. Otto changed to 14, while Motley then wore 36. Otto's jersey from then is in the Hall of Fame, and you can see where the 60 was removed and 14 sewn on. Also, that jersey is a onesie.
i think the next big thing that should happen with jersey numbers is allowing players to wear #100. i'm pretty sure that's Never happened before but, i think it should because then, you'd be able to literally go from 0 to 100 with your jersey number. so, i think if they bring in the 00 And bring in #100, then the jersey numbering system would be complete.
I disagree that big guys (DL anyway) shouldn’t wear single digits. But it has to be certain ones. A DE or DT in jersey 9 looks good. 3. 5. 6. 8 for really good ones. Basically not 1, 2, 4, or 7 because those are iconic QB numbers.

It's why we (stupidly) refer to the 2000s as the '21st century' and '3rd millenium'. The word 'first' is a math error embedded in our language, confounding, as it does,' one' with 'beginning'. Zero is the beginning. The number will be much in demand.
