I'm an recreational golfer who can shoot anywhere from 75 to 90. For example last Sunday I went out and carded a 76. Today I carded an 88. I'd love to be sub 80's all the time, but I've tailored my expectations to accept the game I have on any certain day. This channel changed my way of playing golf and has taught me to accept how fickle golf can be. Thanks Matt for teaching me a new mindset about golf.
When someone asks me “what am I doing wrong?”, I usually say something like, “There are two or three schools of thought about that. And I have no clue what they are”.

Mr. Boomboom, I know you prefer course practice to range practice, but if you showed us some range drills to improve our consistency (especially during the winter months when courses around these parts are closed) I think that would really help our confidentiality and we can start playing like a baus! I started just playing courses on the top tracer and doing closest to the pin with a certain wedge, that's helped a tonne as it does simulate actually playing. Before I was going and literally just hitting balls, waste of time and bad habits
If you're a beginning player, listen to this guy. I've been playing a while and the last couple of years, after finding Matt's channel, have been both my most enjoyable and successful.
Great video, as always. Reason it's so hard for most of us golfers to improve is that it's so hard to change habits that have been ingrained in our game for years, just like everytime Matt hits a wood/hybrid off the teebox, he can't help but start to pick up the tee he never actually used. Priceless.
I’m super excited for this golf season to begin and to put all of the tips and advice I’ve spend all winter getting from your vids into action. The thing that really resonated with me was one of your videos where you said “a double bogey is a bad shot followed by a stupid shot.” I sometimes allow myself to lose emotional control on the course, or try to hit shots there’s no chance I have to stupidly try to impress the people I’m playing with… and blowing up my score and making myself miserable doing it. This will be the year of the playa, and I’ll stay cool calm and collected out there!!
I’m a new golfer. Just started last fall but I play regularly. First thing I was told was to expect most if not all of my shots to have poor results. It really made me feel okay with sucking and made me super appreciative of good shots. It’s also freed me up to try things to just see what would happen. Going into 2025 I’m doing a lot of travel golf to the Caribbean and warmer parts of the states and getting coaching regularly. I’m playing like someone who hasn’t had coaching g who’s been at it for years.
Adjusting par works at any handicap. Currently at 9.9 and I play par 81 courses in my mind. Trying to get my 20 handicap friends to realize that bogey is always a good score for them. Thanks playa
Only been playing for 2 years and I enjoy golf the most when I keep the ball in play and hit my yardages. Regardless of what I score, I know if I keep the ball in play and hit it + or - 5 yards of my target, in my mind I played good enough to shoot a decent score no matter the outcome. I know that if I keep hitting the ball that way, the lower scores will come in time with a solid short game
I’m the same, I play the course and don’t care who I’m playing or what level they are at. I’m competitive with myself not others anymore, it just so happens that once or twice a season I have a really good day.
I used to play golf 3 days a week back in then 90’s and early 2000’s. I would shoot in the mid 80’s most of the time. A bad day would be over 90. Just started playing again after a… 15? … 20? year hiatus. Shot 97 and 95 for my first two stroke play rounds back. It’s stinky winky. Have to get back down in the 80’s sooner than later for my own sanity. Goal is to break 80 by fall 2025.
I’ve bought two of his golf shirts. They are awesome! I definitely recommend buy one. Light, stretchy material, cool in Florida heat and look snazzy. I can’t do the bucket hat tho 😂
Best go to advice if someone asks, "What am I doing wrong?" is to say that they're standing too close to the ball after they hit it. They usually don't ask after that. I'll give advice to my golf partner occasionally, but none of it is mechanical: 1. Your tempo is off. 2. Take a breather and calm down. 3. "Don't worry about that, focus on the next shot." 4. Follow through (usually when he regresses to decelerating on chips). 5. When rushing and not following pre-shot routine, "Focus on your process."
Been playing a “half set” for so long that I think any more would be “counter productive” and confusing. Most playas can’t manage 14 clubs any better than 7 clubs and less truly is more when it comes to golf. I say carry less clubs, enjoy more golf!
Telling people to not listen to people telling them swing tips........doesn't count as a swing tip right? Just making sure because it's my number one swing tip to new golfer in league!
Went to practice 4 days in a row the last week. I have been working on holding the grip with more pressure. Seems to help me hit with more control and power.
White belt only acceptable if you’re a flat belly with 30” or smaller waste. Also if you’re a scratch handicap. That overrides the physical requirements.

I started playing 18 months ago and I shot 115 my first round. Next round in 3 weeks later I shot 98. I been hovering around that 87-92 mark the past 9 months. We can’t play much up here in the winter months so I been chipping in my basement, I’m going to be deadly from 25 feet off the green 😂
when do you stop being a beginner and start trying to break 100 and stop hitting hero shots etc? and should we keep the limited set of clubs to break 100 or add driver and stuff?
I love hitting over trees. Is it my ego, no. I'm still trying to break 90, I'm still just trying to have fun because it's amazing when it works. Do I want to try and hit that weird draw through the gap over the bunker? Of course. Can I? Of course not. I'm not trying to get par 72 lol. I'm enjoying the learning process, not neutering my imagination, and learning. I started Golf in April 2024 40+ handicap, now I am a shooting 95-105. From a previous video: "This isn't the f-ing PGA tour man, just trying to have fun." ~ Golf Sidekick.
It remains a useful shot into single figures. I know of one particular spot that needs to be done over trees from the fairway at my course, and there are instances that commonly require this shot to make the green in regulation from a borrowed fairway. This and the low bender stinger are the most useful hero shots. Do I want to play them? No. Will I need to play them to keep the round on the rails? Almost certainly.
Too funny about the white belt. I bought a package of inexpensive nylon bests and one is white. I thought wow I have a proper golf belt but my wife said I looked like a doof.
