That's really cool that you use fog machines for lighting as that was the intent with our in game fog machines in the Halloween Decoration Sandbox. We decided to use the built in render pipeline for unity as the effect of light refraction off the fog particles was much easier to achieve and get the specific glow that we wanted when say a strobe light shone through it.
My professional background is in filmmaking, and it's interesting how we can use real-world techniques to create digital effects. I've given the odd lecture here and there to film students and I always emphasize learning how things were done "back in the day" as it makes for better understanding of digital production. Doing an A/B checkerboard film cut gives a better understanding of timelines IMHO.
Stumbled across your video while looking up information on fog machines for photography work. Thank you for the great info and recommendations on what to look for in a machine. You may have saved my wallet. :D
Most of the time what fails is the pump. They can be ordered online and are pretty easy to replace. But with the less expensive fog machines, it's sometimes cheaper to just replace the machine. Don't open the machine to work on it unless you're comfortable working with electricity - and of course, unplug it first and let it cool down!
I have a show tonight, and something broke. We have a machine that someone left juice in for a few years, and the tubing is falling apart. We’re getting more of the tube, but I can’t figure out how to get the end back on. What is that called, and how can I put it back on?
Sorry that I didn't see this earlier. Are you talking about the end of the tube that goes in the fog fluid bottle? If so, don't sweat it - put the tube that n the bottle and just make sure that the end doesn't suck itself to the sides of the inside of the bottle. Hope that helps - let me know how it goes. Good luck!
That vortex tunnel was cool. I'm enjoying seeing how some of these effects are done.
Thanks! There's other ways to get that effect, but I've used this method for years.

Thank you, and thanks for the sub!
Any advice for when a fog machine stops working? I can’t tell you how many I have had that are now at the local dump.
