    I love Matt Mask as a character and puller, so this was a fun episode to make.
    Do you think Matt has what it takes to be amongst the armwrestling elite?

    • @BlakeGibbons
      @BlakeGibbons ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I mean, technically, he is elite. If you're even top 100 in the world at something, that's elite. Matt's just not at the top of the pack

    • @armhistorian

      @@BlakeGibbons That's fair.

      Yeah this is right. The potential is there, I just don’t think he has the insane dedication and drive that Devon has, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Devon dedicates his life to arm wrestling and does a lot of gear and it pays off but that’s not for everyone. Both legends

    Matt 's biggest issue is that his personal life is too busy and demanding. He has a job that requires him to be away for long days, weeks, months. He also has a family that he seems to be very dedicated to. This doesn't allow him to focus on training to a high level whatsoever.
    The other factor that's an issue (and I believe is the biggest) is that he NEVER filled out his frame. Matt's potential for size and strength is easily 40-50 pounds heavier than he has ever weighed, at a minimum. Matt could easily have so much more strength and power, but he never went for that. It takes years to develop that kind of muscular size (not just fat). If Matt would have kept building upon his muscularity and size over the course of about 5 years, he WOULD be in that discussion for top 5 in the world. His base genetics are far superior to 90% of people competing in Arm-wrestling.
    Some people just don't like the weight room and don't want to dedicate years to high level gains.

    • @jamesdjl4359
      @jamesdjl4359 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He has also alluded to the fact he doesn't wanna push the PEDS now that he's getting older. He has a very family first oriented focus. He wants to be around for a long time.
      It's hard to compete at the highest level when considering all those factors.

    Levan aside was the only one who managed to take a ride from Gasparini in the last 2 years. Genadi takes 2 rounds, the 5th and 6th, but Ermes is injured. I don't think Matt took arm wrestling seriously, I'm sure with the right concentration this guy could, (or could), do a lot more. he should have had the head of a Devon or a Hermes, I think he had everything to be up there. I've heard so many people talk about Matt and they all say his hand is something out of the ordinary. let's hope dj takes it in his head to reach the next level, he doesn't have a physique destroyed by injuries and similar things if he started now to train 100% he could do something special

      I'd like to see those matches. Although I believe most people would have him as a heavy underdog nowadays.

      @@armhistorian Oh yeah I meant he "might" do fairly well. I just think his long levers and hand control is good against a toproller but hook pullers are able to supinate him which takes away his power which is why he is losing so much recently.

    Matt has on his hand the boutonniere deformity. I also suffer from this for the same damn reason lol I arm wrestled in my early 20s and just took too much punishment. Every time I grip one or two fingers pop out of socket almost like your muscles are too strong for your structure. We feel you Matt we still love you.

    Hey, been watching some of your content, and have enjoyed it. I am in no ways a fan/supporter of arm wrestling, (i am not opposed to it or anything like that, just not one of my interests). I do think your channel is great content and i look forward to not only learning more about the world of arm wrestling but also to see what you have to present.

      Hey! I think you're the first person that doesn't have arm wrestling as an interest, that has also commented on one of my videos.
      I appreciate you watching and enjoying my content.
      I might expand my repertoire outside of arm wrestling some time in the future.

    It's hard to be a high level top roller if your bicep is your weak point.

    • @phalanx8437
      @phalanx8437 ปีที่แล้ว

      @BPJ So why hasn’t he been improving all this time, what’s stopping a high level arm wrestler like him from examining his faults and improving, not to mention he’s surrounded by the best in the world on a regular basis .

    • @hyperchad7033
      @hyperchad7033 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phalanx8437 not enough steroids. Everyone at the top level is jacked to the guts with steroids and mask seems like he does not take or takes very low amounts of it.
      His training is also not very consistent and he just pulls because he wants to.

    He did pretty good at the qualifiers the other day. Hopefully he's had a spark lit under him after all these losses. I'd love to see Matt get back on top. I have kind of made a theory about his fall as of late. And I could be completely wrong but it's what I came up with. If you've watched his videos the last couple years or so he has so much going on in his life. I just don't think his complete focus has been on arm wrestling. He bought a b&b that he runs, cleans and fixes up. I think he has a full time job and so many other things that have occupied his time. So I really think arm wrestling took maybe not a back seat but just became one of the many things he does. To be at the top of anything you have to live and breathe it. Take Devon for example. His entire life is arm wrestling from the second he wakes up until he goes to bed. He's working out everyday. His eating is catered to arm wrestling. His daily activities are arm wrestling. That's his job, his day off activities, his vacations are arm wrestling. It's all he does. And I understand everyone can't do that. Most guys do have full time jobs and a lot of other things going on. But arm wrestling still is a priority in their lives. Devon is an exception because everything he does revolves around the sport but for Matt to get back up there he has to put arm wrestling back up next to the top things that is his life. I think he can do it. He's got more drive and determination than just about anybody. I could be completely wrong but that's what I came up with.

      Interesting theory. I'm sure there's truth to that! He is a busy man.
      I'd love to see him do well on the table again. Without a doubt one of my favorite pullers.
