    Love his tasteful, musical drumming.

His solos were pieces of music first. Incredible chops were just extra. Insane talent. And, he was legally blind.

He was already a master violinist as a teenager but his instructor told him he would not be able to see the conductors wand from the pit and he should choose a different instrument. He turned lemons into lemonade. His blindness brought out his strength. My favorite drummer.

@@UPdan The videos I've seen of him giving seminars and speaking to the audience shows that he was indeed a very modest and friendly person. My favorite comment by him was to a student who wanted to play like him and he said, "Why? There's already one of me in the world. Why would you want another one?"
He always encouraged his students to be their personal best in their own styles.
I've never heard of him disrespecting another drummer.

Instead of blowing you away, Joe pulls you in. What a wonderful and musical solo. I've admired Joe since the 60's and he has always been my favorite drummer.
Such a light touch and so much power at the same time.

What few know is, Joe was a featured soloist with the Boston Philharmonic at the age of 9, on violin! He appeared several times with them as a violinist, he was 15 when he decided to dedicate his efforts to the drums, Thank You Joe!

I saw Joe perform a similar sole in 1964 in Brookings, SD at SD State U. He did a fantastic 1/2 hour drum solo with his left hand single stick roll! The best I’d ever seen then and to this day! I’ve been a drummer since the 60’s & 70’s thru college! Joe has always been my IDOL! Thanks for putting this on the Internet in 2024 for others see now! He will be remembered as the GREATEST of all Time!!

I’d have every student watch this to learn musical melodic rhythms. Every phrase is interesting from the softest to the loudest, great contrasts, texture, cymbal technique, some Stick Control patterns too. Truly one of Joe°s best solos.

Morello's left hand is faster than a speeding bullet, he can jump over other drummers in a single bound, doesn't need Lois Lane or Perry White. Will never forget the Quartet's performance at NTSU in the Fall of 1962....we had read in "Downbeat", or heard about Brubeck's drummer, and how the other band members just left the stage whilst Joe annihilated an audience.. well, he did and I'm still knackered.

The fact he was this amazing and legally blind... even with 20/20 vision he would just be the best... it calms the mind only to melt it then to bring it back again.. I litreally could just sit back and listen to Joe Morello on drums and Paul Desmond on alto sax for like 15 albums in a row.. no other sounds... im a perfect world bing is on vocals with them but thats just my dream..

@@thecrippledrummer Blame the director, not the camera operator. He only shoots what he's told. The director makes the calls on what goes out over the air -- which shots and for how long they stay with a given shot. Seems like you can always tell if the director tries too hard to be "creative" instead of working with the melody -- like using a long shot during a solo, instead of something tight on the hands. Seems like that could be worked out at rehearsal.

Most of the time he caught Joe's right ear, or a straight on shot of his face. They do the same thing with dancers, even step dancers: they show their shoulders and faces when they're doing the most difficult and beautiful steps and it drives me nuts. Too bad we don't have a video of Joe's performance. Lost forever, we'll just have to listen, but it would have been nice to have seen it, too.
