    I re-uploaded this a few hours after posting because I was told the music was too loud in comparison with me speaking. Big thanks to Jade for letting me know! Sorry to those who had already left comments on the last one, but I wanted fix the audio issue while the video was still new ㅠㅠ

      For the shoving, I can't believe it still happens. I experienced it the first time in 1983 and 35 years later it still happens? I wonder if today's 30 year olds will do the same thing when they turn 60.

      Absolutely. I don't like the whole "hierarchy" thing ruling life in korean society.

      Ok, so almost all Asian countries are like this, but after working for a US company for almost a decade now, I got used to calling anyone only by their names...there's no difference on how I address the janitor and the CEO of the company. I find beauty in that. Being respectful to EVERYONE. But of course, I don't call my parents by their names. They will always be "mom" & "dad", and my older sisters will always be "unnie" (in Korean context). But one time, when I address new family members, like my older brother in-laws by just their names... I was called out like "Aren't you rude for not addressing them properly?" and I'm like "Duuuuude". I still call them by their names to this day. *smirks

    Ajuma's cutting in front of you, happens all the time in Busan.
    Also your waiting at the subway in the line to get on, there's two arrows on the floor for getting on, and one arrow in the middle for getting off. Almost always someone cuts into the middle just when the train stops. GRRRR. Listen, people need to get OFF using the middle lane, the outside is for getting ON the train. If I'm on the subway and getting off, my American Football lineman skills have no problem mowing your Korean butt over when the train stops and the door opens.
    My favorite thing is when going into a restaurant, find a table, plop your phone down to reserve it while your going to the toilet to wash up before eating. yeah, Koreans are really respectful for other peoples stuff. Never a problem with theft in Korea from my experience.

      Being from the US, I know Italians are offended by our crappy, junky version of pizza already. I can't imagine how the Koreanized versions make you feel! A friend of mine has a collection of photos she's taken of weird and bizarre food promos she sees around Seoul and some of the combinations are....upsetting🥲

    Lol the ActiveX thing, I can explain. So ActiveX is an old windows runtime for programs. You can think of it the way flash used to work (you’d have to download flash player before you could watch videos, etc)
    Basically it was a way that used to make web programming easier in the late 90s early 2000s. It sounds like they are just really behind the times, but not malware.
    Insurance companies and banks etc still use it here in the U.S. you see it a lot.

      @hlajdfoiaojd4868 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The younger generation is worse. The age hierarchy at school (especially in college) is fucking ridiculous in Korea. You have to do everything older students have to do.

  • @MsYahngsCafe
    @MsYahngsCafe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Haven't lived in Korea for a while, but back in the day, asking how old you are as a greeting was very common. If you are younger, you have to give respect to your elders, and they don't have to give you respect back. If you are older, you have a responsibility to the younger person. If the younger person has a problem or needs something, the older person should do for younger. If you go out to eat, the older person is expected to pay, and the younger person just has to give the respect. This does allow for the older person to be quite rude to the younger person, so even Koreans hate this. Also, if you go visit someone in Korea, you should have a gift for their home & money for the host. They are responsible for you & to do everything for you, & they buy everything for you if you go out.

    I had an ajumma walk up to me on a crowded subway car and demand I get up to give her my seat. (It wasn't an elderly seat either)
    I was raised to respect my elders but I still had over an hour left on my ride. Also of all people she could have approached, why me?
    So i looked her dead in the eyes and said no. Then put my headphones in and ignored her.

    I remember having to install ActiveX when i was a kid, but i don't remember for what reason. I think it had something to do with being able to access the internet. I know DirectX was required for most PC games.
    By the way, it's the same in Japan in when it comes to IE, or at least it WAS the same few years ago. Several of my university professors had Windows XP and IE, and that was 3 years ago, when Windows 10 was coming out. It's not like they love IE, it's just that, anything new, any change no matter how tiny it is takes forever to be implemented. Most companies in Japan still use Fax Machines, and many smaller businesses either don't have a website, or if they do, it looks like the early days of the internet with all the flash and blinky pop-ups.
    For me, probably the number one thing i hated the most about Japan was the whole ''tatemae culture''. They would never tell you what they think or what they want from you. They spent such an enormous amount of efforts giving you these indirect hints hoping you would ''guess'' what they want from you, or if they want to tell you something, they would never do it directly, but always indirectly in a way that is so confusing. You end up having to constantly think - ''was that guy trying to tell me something?'', ''was he giving me a hint?'', ''was i supposed to do that?'', ''what did she really meant by that?'', it consumes your entire mental space, it forces you to constantly think about every single tini tiny detail or word you are using, and it's so irritating and a waste of time and efforts. Most of the time it leads to misunderstanding, and it just makes you feel like you are in a prison. I cannot stand this culture.

    • @NomadicMadda
      @NomadicMadda  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I never said pizza was an American dish--I have two Italian friends back home, and we've actually laughed about the Italian vs. American pizza disappointment they've had as well. Korean pizza in particular, however, is typically based off of American-style pizza from chains like Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, or Dominoes.

  • @SoyMarina

    I would TOTALLY get mad at people who called the wrong number and would insist like I was the one who was out of place. What I didn't get was the whole weird pizza thing. I do agree with not wanting sweet potatoes or corn on top of my chesse (wtf), but I was convinced that pizza was italian. ;)

    When people trail you in a shop, just tell them that you will do by yourself.
    Many people don't know this simple wisdom.
    Older people cutting in is notorious in Korea, and I hate that too.
    Whenever that happens, I just ask them, "Don't, go in the line".
    Older people are less civilized because they usually have been through very difficult times, themselves or their parents.
    I hope people will not tolerate that rude behavior.
    The reason they keep doing that is younger people tolerate them.
    Internet browser...
    I don't know about Mac, but other than that, you can use all kinds of browsers, unless for internet banking or government websites.
    This is because the security is very important.
    They cannot develop new security system whenever a new browser is developed.
    We send money and pay taxes through internet.

    I'm so glad america left the whole 'elders rule' attitude behind. It's not completely gone yet, but a least it's not normal for someone older than me to be able to force me to do things. Every culture has their ups and downs, and america has some really bad downs. I'm just glad this isn't one of them.

    Just for your information, Korea is changing quite rapidly to international norm considering the fact practically no Korean ever visited European or American countries during colonial period(not allowed and maybe less than a couple of people during 35 years). And also up to 1970s not many people had the opportunity to travel abroad as people cannot afford to and especially for young males who must finish their military duty.
