Dr. Jawad talks about what you need to know if you don't have a gallbladder. The gallbladder is a vital organ that stores and concentrates bile and when it's gone, fat digestion, fat soluble vitamin absorption (vitamin A, D, E, K) can be a problem. This is due to the function of concentration. The gallbladder concentrates bile by 20x - and without this, fat digestion and healthy fat absorption will be deficient. After surgery, bile flows from the liver (where it is made) through the common bile duct and into the small intestine. Because the gallbladder has been removed, the body can no longer store bile between meals.
The gallbladder is a small pouch that sits just under the liver. The gallbladder stores bile produced by the liver. After meals, the gallbladder is empty and flat, like a deflated balloon. Before a meal, the gallbladder may be full of bile and about the size of a small pear.
In response to signals, the gallbladder squeezes stored bile into the small intestine through a series of tubes called ducts. Bile helps digest fats, but the gallbladder itself is not essential. Removing the gallbladder in an otherwise healthy individual typically causes no observable problems with health or digestion yet there may be a small risk of diarrhea and fat malabsorption.
    Do you need your Gallbladder?
You gallbladder is a storage device, essentially a reservoir, designed to concentrate bile, which is produced by your liver. When you eat, the gallbladder contracts, and pushes out its stored bile into your intestine. The bile helps dissolve the fatty component of foods. Without your gallbladder, your liver will still produce bile but it will no longer be stored in the gallbladder. The bile will constantly slowly enter your intestine.
Fortunately, the gallbladder is an organ people can live without. Your liver produces enough bile to digest a normal diet. Once the gallbladder is removed, bile flows out of the liver through the hepatic ducts into the common bile duct and directly into the small intestine, instead of being stored in the gallbladder. Because now the bile flows into the small intestine more often, softer and more frequent stools can occur in about 1 percent of people.
TUDCA works either by its interactions with other bile salts or by preventing cells from apoptosis. Gallstones Taking bile salts is a long-established way for people to prevent gallstones. TUDCA also helps to dissolve gallstones that may already be forming.

Gallbladder removed in 2002, 20 years of IBS

Thank you again for your very clear and useful information. It helps me so much in understanding my condition. Had severe pancreatitis last year, probably due to gallstone blockage though no gallstone in bile ducts. But there are gallstones in my gallbladder and that's why I am advised to have the bladder taken out. However, I'm getting more and more convinced of the important function the gallbladder has. Therefore am trying to cure gallbladder and stones thru carnivore diet. Aware of the risk of repeated gallstone blockage. Do you think carnivore diet might work? And is it wise to combine it with intermittent fasting? Looking forward to your opinions.

I am not a fan of IF because it may cause sluggish bile. I would recommend to do a gallbladder 'flush'----research the one that may be safe for you. This is kick start the process.

@@thejdocrealminute4648 Thank you very much for your advice. Hesistant to do a gallbladder flush though. Afraid loosing too many stones at once might increase risk of gall ducts blockage. Guess I just need some patience and see what carnivore can do for me. In combination with the tudca and ox bile you advised. Good to know you are not a fan of IF in this case. Dr Berg suggests that gallbladder starts excreting bile after a day. However cannot find any research on that. Better safe than sorry. Appreciate your help! Wish we had doctors like you in Holland.

If I take the ultra-zyme is there anything else that I should take after gallbladder removal? My experience is chronic fatigue, IBS, joint pain, inflammation and weight gain. I am prescribed nuvigil, vitamin b injections, and vitamin D.
It's not clear to me if I should take more than the ultra-zyme to help counteract the loss if my gallbladder .
    Thanks in Advance!

I would really like to keep my gallbladder, but i have big gallstones. I think this it all started from a hiatal hernia. So upset that i suffered for 11 damn years; i asked my MD years ago for ursodiol while my stones were small, but he pushed surgery instead. Just negligence.

The cells of the liver produce about 800 to 1,000 milliliters (about 27 to 34 fluid ounces) of bile every day. Bile is a yellow, brownish or olive-green liquid that helps our body digest fats.

Which then drips on the ileocecal valve since there is no gallbladder and causes the valve to stick open increasing the risk of SIBO.

Hey doc, I had my gallbladder removed about 8 or 9 years ago at about age 30, ever since I've had flare ups of acne. Never had acne prior. Is there something I can do to counter act this? I'm almost 40 and having acne is out. I've tried Differin gel, Pro Active, and all kinds of over the counter treatments. I'm at the end of my rope here.

Hi Doc, I started taking Ultrazyme about a week ago and since then, I have had severe, watery diarrhea and stomach upset/pain. I've tried taking it 20 minutes before my meal the last couple of days, and on other days, right before my meal and a couple of other times, after my meal. I was thinking it could be die off symptoms, or even a stomach virus, but it all seems to be related to Ultrazyme? Have you heard of this, or have any general advice regarding severe diarrhea after taking this supplement? I'm wondering if maybe I don't need the supplement. However, I do not have a gallbladder and wanted to start using Ultrazyme again, because I was starting to have GERD symptoms (mostly acid-reflux, heartburn, but no stomach pain) again while on my Betaine HCL + Pepsin and Gallbladder Formula regimen. That was working for awhile, but suddenly seemed to become ineffective for late night acid reflux. Hence, the reintroduction of Ultrazyme. I've had some of the same issues with Ultrazyme in the past, but it was hit or miss. Maybe I'm just not using correctly? Long comment, sorry!

Don’t be. But avoid fatty meals for a while after removed. You also may experience diarrhea for a time no matter what you eat. I had mine removed on my 30’s. Now I’m in my 40’s and starting bile salts. Start low and work your way up. If it is too much you will feel the taste in your mouth and bloated stomach. My rule is take it only with big meals or very fatty meals not if I’m having toasts only but if ad eggs then I take it. You will figure it out. Good luck!!!
PS. Take during or after the meal not before on empty stomach.
