@@mattiv1 There is no “overdrive” pedal. It was just the Vox UL-4120 head and the Rickenbacker Transonic cabinets with the Vox Long Tom Echo unit giving a VERY slight pre-amp push. The grey Vox wah-wah is engaged to almost full treble in the solo just as it was in “Communication Breakdown”.
I think Joe Walsh was right about how to play this riff and sound like the record. The D's sound slightly out of tune, so to get that effect you have to purposely do a microbend with your index finger every time you hit the D, and hit both the A string and D string so the slight difference creates a "rub". Assuming Pagey did that on purpose, I think that's genius. It makes it sound like more than one guitar to my ears, but I think it's just one guitar. An epic track.
Page did do that on purpose. I remember him talking about it in an interview in a guitar magazine back in the '90s. He said he did that on a bunch of songs (I think "Four Sticks" was another).
This is a different take of the song than the one originally released from the album. If you listen closely, Robert Plant's lyrics (obscured in the background) are a little different.
That's just the scratch vocal take that was sung live along with the band. The final vocal with completed lyrics was recorded afterwards (Plant supposedly nailed it on that first take.)
The song was written by Page on his soon-to-be iconic Les Paul Standard sunburst and has credited its a unique sound for the golden power of the song's iconic riff.
This will work nicely for the Bass Kazoo I've been dying to jam on.... Oddly, the open mic folks look at me funny when I attempt to explain why it's the size of a kayak🤔🤔🤔
The sounds Page got out of that guitar we're amazing for that Time, no guitarist today could even compare to Jimmy Page!! My opinion, but there's other great guitarist, Jimmy was Jimmy!! 🤘🤘🤘
@@Ash_18037 i know jimmy was great, but if a new guitarist come out with this tone in 2022, no one would like him. But if its jimmy, they will said "its the classic rock's sound".

It sounds like the solo has slapback echo on it, but just one or so repeats, but for the final note of it the repeats are turned up so they tail off. I wonder what they used? The tone itself sounds like fuzz to me. Very square wave and a hint of octave. Perhaps a cocked wah too, but that filtered effect can be done at the board too. My first cousin's name is Page. A fairly close family connection to Jimmy. I only found out a year ago. I have never met her, because she lives abroad, so think it would be rude to ask her to set up a meeting if she could. I'd have so many questions for him. I'd drive him up the wall with me trying to pick his brain for all his playing and recording tricks.
Jimmy page can't play the guitar. He is one of the worst guitarists in rock history. That level could be reached within 2 months of guitar playing. He can't play a single chord or note without it being chicken picked

I don't really need to mention that he's created the greatest riffs , solos , songs of all time ? Or formed THE greatest band of the four most talented musicians ever ? No , didn't think so 👍

The solo is crazy! Sounds so different isolated!
I'd say everything sounds different, but not the solo (wah+OD) 😆

Oh that solo. Just mind bending tone. Mind bending playing. This riff is so bad ass - it's almost creepy. Love it.
Wah wah fully depressed forward for this and communication breakdown solo!
True
The solo was channeled straight from the depths of the underworld...

Strange, i never noticed i just automatically do that when i play this song.
Correct though. Page did that a lot.

@@andrewmcintosh2703 Ah, true! I can hear it in my head.
Down stroke or alternate picking?
@@HarmonicaGuitar Good question. I have my own idea about how he did it in the studio, but live it was all alternate picking.
Recorded in 1969 … pretty amazing for the time! Thanks, love these tracks! Here’s a challenge for you: Soundchaser by Yes - *any* instrument!

Great work on his Man !....Awesome !!
Thanks!

Solo at 3:09. Now you know how its supposed to sound

I think it was recorded on a custom though interestingly
It was recorded with his Telecaster .
I've heard this song a million times, but never like this!
it would be great to be able to have copies of all these wonderful Isolated Guitar tracks by the greats to but, great stuff!

The definition of the dirty sound ❤

WOW! It's like I've never heard this song before? So much sitting below the audible radar.
I don't think I ever noticed the theremin in the outro before

Imagine playing with this kinda tone in 2022, guarantee you would make it to the Guitar Fails compilation on TH-cam.
Imagine not understanding the classic Jimmy Page guitar tone of at all, and judging it by insipid 2022 standards.

Almost isolated guitar track could still hear Robert plant jus a little bit.
The lyrics sound like a live version as well because they are a little different
1:25 how tf does he doed that
maybe feedback + wah thats a thing like hendrix do
It's a Theremin with Binson Echorec for the slapback delay.

sounds like a dive bomb but idk how considering he was probs using tele or LP
@kinniecas9004
Yea pretty sure that was from his les paul custom it had a bigsby
Rock’n Roll should always be raw and sloppy
All those wacky sounding volume swells that echo before the solo starts was done with a Theremin.
In studio he could hold the rhythm.
