Canadian Joel Hastings plays Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 14 by Felix Mendelssohn. For another live performance of Rondo Capriccioso, check out • Mendelssohn Rondo Capr...
I've listened to every possible rendition and every possible interpretation and nothing surpasses Hastings' skill in articulation and technical prowess. Nothing inside can accept any other person's POV with regards to this piece. I love this rendition so much that I ordered the book and am going to work on this piece till I match his. His sonority is so unhurried and so well paced that there absolutely no white noise. Just complete understanding. It's like he KNOWS this piece like a really good friend. I love it!
I used to learn this piece 5 years ago and this performance was my role model. At the moment, it's still my favorite interpretation. Wonderfully played!
Just started learning this piece and wooooow this is amazing!!!!! Dont know if i can ever play to this level though 😅 the octave and arpeggio parts were crazy good
This is good but the first time I heard it played was by a guy called Richard Lennox a 'cross over' musician. I have to say that he was as good as this chap.
+Roderich Edelstein Thank you. One of my cousins played this when he just turn 13. It was a real stress for him especially towards the end.It is not an easy one by all means. How do you feel when you play it for the first time ?
+Roderich Edelstein The opening of this piece is indeed very relaxing and beautiful but becoming very challenging later on.Not many composers can compose something like this at age 15 !
Remarkable. Your phrasing, especially within the first part, should be the model for those of us still learning it. Clearly the best of the youtube interpretations.
I missed the light airy playful quality in this type of mendelssohn. This is an average rendition. Bolet's is far superior but this is a good job. Just way too conservative for me.
I love this interpretation - as close to perfection as this piece can sound I think. Love the balance, the clear distinction between different LH articulations at 3:30-3:40 and the long legato lines in the RH at 4:29. The only thing I could wish for would be a bit more of a true 'piano' and 'pianissimo' dynamic during the last transition and theme statement to contrast even more with the dramatic ending (after those big V, I chords at 5:46/47)
I'm playing this piece at a competition next month and am frantically trying to listen to as many versions as I can to compare the andante part and try to apply it... I hope it goes well!
omg, i've played for that long, and i'm 14, too. but i'm playing this song, and it's supposed to be that fast, because the piece is split into 2 parts, the beginning, andante, and the rest of the song, which is allegro. hope i helped xx
does anybody know where i can get a copy of the score sheet of this.... i used to play this in the piano when i was in high school but unfortunately i lost the score sheet when we moved in to another residence... thanks.
Thanks for playing this piece! I LOVE your interpretation! I am learning this piece right now, and it is SO much fun! I don't care if it takes me 2 years to perfect.......I will finish this piece! I LOVE it! You play this very, very well. Not too fast! Perfect speed, and SO musical!
Une interprétation pleine de nuances et de précision. En effet, un exemple pour ceux qui comme moi apprennent ce morceau techniquement capricieux. A really nuanced and precise performance. In fact, preciously useful to the ones like me learning this piece, which is technically capricious^^
깔끔하게 정말 아름답게 들리네요. 잘 듣고 갑니다~~ bravo~

Why would anyone dislike this.....?
Camilla Holmes Because they can't appreciate the good music
This is a very challenging work written by a 15 year old piano virtuoso and musical prodigy.
Just because your crazy elitist attitude draws upon hate.

Most people can play this work at age 15 but there is only one who compose this work at 15.
I played this at age 11. I'm 13 right now.
ChronoAplabFilms Start composing, son.

OMG, I am totally attracted by his Rondo Capriccioso! Too sad to know that he passed away 6 years ago..
It's pretty much how I play it, without having ever heard Hastings play it.
I love it, it brings me back very nice memories, I played it at my first concert when I was 10 years old

What recording equipment did you use?
+00CollinsL i second that
Great performance! Why do you sit so far from the piano though?
Such a great piece!! Love the way you play it, energetic but exquisite...The last part made my heart tremble
Beautifully played. And from memory too!

What an absolutely musical and superb performance. Amazing. I could watch you play that and listen to that rendition all day long. What a talent!

@jamma140 Big talk for such a young one. You better change your attitude and start being modest boy, you have a lot to learn.
If this is this the slow version, why is the fast bit faster than the norm? Really good though
It's clear. Wonderful.
so scared...I gotta memorize this monster too..in around a week or so.
this is one of the hardest pieces i've played so far... any tips?
OMG... great performance man! this is the most dificult song I have ever tried to play... pages and more pages of hard trainning...
I think it is done very well; however, it seems to lack some urgency and playfulness found in other versions.
