I think una maraming taong hindi nakakarealize that "men are trash" is not just a phrase, but also a social movement. From how I see it, it is a movement against patriarchy as a system rather than men as individuals. And if you ask a people who use that term, many would say that they are only referring to a group of men, but not all men. So hindi naman daw pala "nilalahat" ang men in their movement.
HOWEVER, I don't think yung paggamit sa phrase na yun ang pinakaeffective way to fight for their cause. Because the term "men are trash" often just leads to a discussion around the WORDS used in that phrase rather than the ISSUES that the movement is fighting for. We cannot blame people for "misinterpreting" the phrase "men are trash" dahil napaka broad and open to interpretation naman talaga nung phrase.
I understand that the phrase "men are trash" can easily grab the attention of the people, which may start conversations around that subject matter. But although it its attention-grabbing, I don't think it sends its message well. Kasi kung iisipin, the main message of the movement is actually "patriarchy is trash" rather than "men is trash". And I think that's a more accurate way of describing the movement.
Ang dali kasi mamisinterpret or magamit, kahit nung mismong mga tao advocating for "men are trash", into thinking that this means that men as INDIVIDUALS are trash. Pero ang totoo lang din naman is a lot of men were just highly influenced by the ideals imposed on them by the society or the patriarchy. For instance, a lot of feminine men feel the need to "toughen up" or magpakalalaki raw, dahil sa pressure ng mga nakapaligid nila. And that "pressure" can come from both men and women, pwedeng from friends, partner in relationships, or even from parents.
And there lies the other problem. Masyadong combative or "pala-away" yung phrase na "men are trash". Some argue that there becomes a shame associated with men as INDIVIDUALS rather than with men as PART OF THE PATRIARCHY. And that could lead to some men feeling that their concerns are invalidated. It fosters "guilt" among people for being born as a man, rather than as an eye-opener to help in dismantling patriarchy (such as for instance yung mga may mindset pa rin na only men can lead).
That could be harmful in the long run, especially since some men might disregard or invalidate their own problems for thinking that "oh, I guess my problems are not important because some sector of society (such as women) tend to have it worse." But that can be quite hurtful because, as data suggests, men are more likely to commit suicide than women precisely because of the patriarchal stigma that "men have to be tough" or that "men should not cry". So pushing for the phrase "men are trash" may actually have a lot of negative consequences on other issues of society.
So I think rather than focusing "men", the movement should focus more on the patriarchy and its overarching impacts not just on men but in all aspects and sectors of society. The main objective for this movement should not be to instigate "hate" towards men, but rather to make men realize how they can be effective allies in dismantling patriarchy.
