Now why would you do a review of a Land Rover, and not go off road? These dudes are complaining that the Disco has lost all its off-road cred, but how do they know because they never tested it! C'mon guys, if you had bothered to take this vehicle onto some really gnarly trails you would have discovered that it actually has more off-road capability than any Discovery/LR3/4 before it. It just cloaks that capability in a very sharp suit, sort of like James Bond. I think you owe the Disco another review, maybe take a Land Cruiser and a Wrangler along too as a comparison, and this time get into some real rough stuff. I think you'll be surprised at just what the Disco can handle.

Gas engine tows more because it weighs less than the diesel does. Gross weight is a factor in towing capability.

Land Rover basically ruined the Discovery by stripping it of its core identity. Trying to be more "urban"? No thanks Land Rover, the Evoque is already failing that category.

This is so contradictory they praise it for being great off road and a go anywhere vehicle then Nathan says early in this video it can’t go off road. So can it go off road or not? I guess is it’s a great off roader but they are slating it to sell American vehicles. He also said about British electronics are Americans that much better in reliability?

I wish the FLT would do more reviews on the Land Cruiser 200 showing how the articulation and traction on the 200 atrac traction control system compares to say a 4 runner trd pro with lockable rear, and maybe Land Rover, & G-wagon, for comparison. I'm curious how well the 200 atrac with center diff lock and atrac/crawl system work in real situations off road. Personally I would love to have triple lock capability from the factory with the LC200 but in reality atrac should be rather affective.

I am totally with Nathan, great review, guys! The new Disco is such a let down :( I was ready to order a Disco 4 but then waited for the new one and I am never going to buy this ugly piece of SUV, it looks like a blown up fookin Evoque. And all those silly seat motors will fail right after the warranty together with the air suspension.

I own a 2017 Discovery HSE Lux and a 2011 LR4. Now, I think the new Disco is great, and I took it off road and it performed really well. Although I prefer the design, V8, and split tailgate of my LR4, I still think the new Discovery is a fantastic daily loaded with equipment. Biggest problem with the Discovery: the seats are too hard

Let the third owner add all the jerry cans, johnson lift bars, extra racks....etc. and enjoy it off road with a tent. The original owner just wants to be different than the neighbor. And its a nice vehicle for doing that. When your lease runs out you can step up to the Sport or the full Rangey if you have enjoyed the experience

Cool video guys. Glad to see Mike bringing some useful feature commentary to this video. But Nathan... my dude...
Lets straighten a couple things out, shall we?
    1. The base price of a 2018 Discovery is $53,085. It is not $67,000. Not sure where you're pulling that arbitrary number. And another thing: if y'all had done your homework, you maybe could have tied in that a fully optioned 2018 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon now crests $50,000. Open a model's configurator and do your research.
    2. Instead of gawking at the sky high sticker price of your press model with things on it that many normal customers probably wont buy, why not spend some time highlighting the fact that the TD6 engine in the Discovery is only a $2,000 option? Or that, by comparison, that Jeep will charge you $4,500 for their EcoDiesel in the Grand Cherokee? At least Mike had the decency to defend the TD6's power and fuel economy which, had you guys actually driven the car any manner of distance, you would have witnessed cresting 28mpg on long highway drives easily.
    3. Gentlemen... the tow rating. Again, Do. Your. Research. US regulations on tow ratings are confounding enough but keeping in mind that Land Rover doesn't actually SET the tow rating, the math here is simple: the engine power does not solely dictate a vehicles maximum tow rating. It has to do with gross vehicle weight as well. Which, had you looked closely, you would have noticed that the TD6 weighs more than the Si6 Discovery does. And wouldn't you know it, that drop in overall tow rating corresponds almost exactly with the increase in total vehicle weight.
    4. Land Rover's air spring independent suspension system INCREASES articulation at its highest setting, in part thanks to a system called Cross-Link. Something you might have known if you actually drove it off-road...
    5. The air springs in the Discovery (and all Land Rover products) do not inflate to 100% of their capacity in Extended Mode and become "stiff." Again, something you might have know if you actually drove it off road...
    6. We can assume that your idea of an "off-road package" looks something like the 17" wheel and 70 series tire you see on a Wrangler Rubicon. Here's the thing: an off-road machine a gigantic sloppy sidewall does not make. In the case of the Discovery it's mostly thanks to... you guessed it! The AIR SPRING suspension system. AGAIN, something you might have known if you actually drove it off-road. And, just for giggles, its important you note that the predecessor to the Discovery (the LR4) which you've built up in this video as a purpose built vehicle came standard with 19" wheels running 50 series tires. And an Air Spring suspension system. And yes, it ran that setup across the world in all manner of terrain.
    7. "I know these guys want urban... it's bling!!"

This video completely contradicts the video you all did just weeks ago. I know it's popular to hate on Land Rover, but the truth is this truck is really good. Land Rover is nothing like they used to be. They refuse to even have just 1 real off road model. Jeep seems to be doing pretty damned well with a solid axle vehicle. There's room for competition. The only Discovering you're going to do in this is going down a dirt road. Bring a real Discovery or even the Defender to the US as a more upscale off road vehicle.

Winner for sure!

There are a few issues with this vehicle: 1. Jerry Mcgovern (Land Rover designer) 2. It cant be off-roadable cause NO ONE takes it off road. This is an unfortunate combo which means that you get a vehicle that feels like an ordinary car and a design job that could have been a hell of a lot better

Liam Taylor Land Rover has been using the 3.0 Supercharged V6 since 2014. It is a smaller variant and is actually built on a similar block as the larger 5.0 Supercharged V8 that Jaguar and Land Rover have been using for years.
Edit: I believe the 5.0 engine has been around since 2010 with the XJ, XF, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and LR4. The LR4 never got a supercharged 5.0 variant.

Former Discovery 1 owner and yeah, they have lost their way. One of those in 10-15 years will be an undesirable pile of garbage mostly unrepairable due to the complex systems. Just look at Range Rover classics vs P38's. Discovery 1's were the last really rugged relatively simple rig they sold stateside. What I don't get is yeah, Range Rover luxury, ok, Evoque now covers that too, so now they need to make the Discovery a urban bling crossover too? Seriously, you need at least one real utility oriented off-roader to claim any continuity of an off-road heritage. Unfortunately the Defender replacement sounds like it's going the way of a cute ute too. Wranglers make the perfect case that utility sells well, stop focusing on image and styling and put some emphasis back on ruggedness, utility, and less on Hollywood Blvd, pissing all your credibility away. You have to retain some in order to try and cash in on it.

You guys didn’t take it off road to visually show us how “it’s not a true off roader anymore”. Yes, Land Rover is catering to the market with this particular vehicle but that’s just good business. I think the Discovery is a very capable off roader for its size, dimensions and intended use. I’m fairly certain it’ll go places and over land that most of not all other CUVs wouldn’t make it. I love the look and real off road cred of the LR4 but I would buy this Discovery. I’d even seriously consider the Diesel engine to get that torque as I don’t do and likely won’t be towing anything over 7000lb anyway. Surprised you didn’t go off road with it to see if it fails out there.

you're showing your age ... articulation is no longer a thing. all new trucks, including all Toyotas and the new G wagens and of course land rovers, are moving to software to get you through, and it works BETTER. take this truck in the hardest trail you have, put it next to a jeep with articulation and lockers and I bet you the discovery will get up the same trail, stock. no, you can go "rock crawl" on the rubicon trail, but tricks that can are absolutely miserable on the road.

Also another dude (from a channel calls Fifth Gear) test it in Snow, and was freaking awesome too, besides than a spanish channel called Diariomotor (Motordiary) along with Toyota Land Cruiser, and both was pretty nice (Land Rover Discovery a bit better) so I think than always can trust in LRD's

I think they make it clear that throwback is just a way for people to be hipster rugged while doing nothing more dangerous than walking through an empty park. In my disco all those features are useful when your out in the middle of nowhere, or when the rear seat passengers are taking in the view. It might be a rugged offroader but let's face it, these aren't going to follow the 7 year 3rd owner rule because nobody is gonna accept all those "throwback" features over an overstuffed terrain response system that isn't working because it was never used. Electronics are fine as long as you have the info to fix them, but car companies never give out info on keeping their computers on wheels working.
LR needs to build a vehicle for the S in SUV, some of us still take trucks camping to places with no cell service or bathrooms. It's pretty obvious they still have the know how even if they stopped building them.

I think you really need to look at this car from the perspective of land rover. Their core customer, the customer that pays the bills, does not take their car offroad and just wants a stylish SUV. Yes it's sad land rover doesn't make solid axle trucks anymore but in the real world, a land rover customer doesn't know what a solid axle is, so why not cater to them and make more money.

No point LR making it a rock crawler when none of it's customers will use it as one.
It's not lost it's way - it's just evolved into what the people signing the cheques want.

Thing is those useless tools are the ones earning and spending the money.
While you're driving an 18 year old, almost worthless pajero about someone had to develop new cars. Are they going to make them suit the 3rd+ owner, 10 years down the line or the one walking into the showroom with a bag full of cash?
I would suggest the useless tools are the ones who moan about things they were never going to fork out for in the first place.
      Beggars can't be choosers.
If you want them to develop more off road biased vehicles tell them so on the customer satisfaction form they will send you after you buy one. Or if you're really put off go buy one of the more offroad biased competition.
If you're not going to buy any until they're old and cheap anyway you really have no right to moan since you're getting someone else's cast-offs.

Looks can be deceiving. This thing will handle just about anything off-road you can throw at it short of extreme rock crawling.

Land Rover should be for off-road cars only Range Rover should be for city cars/luxury SUV’s

I think this vehicle is very disappointing. The last of the line discovery /LR4 looked like nothing else is was rugged. This looks too soft. Maybe the new defender will regain where the LR4 left off.

by putting independent suspension on the disco 3 and 4, that was already kinda pushing it into becoming something it’s not. then in 2014, taking out the Big V8 and putting a piece of shit V6 was at that point ruining it, but hey it still had a chassis.... 2017 5th disco comes, chassis gone, 22 inch rims, big ugly round ford look alike body. not really liking what rover is doin to their vehicles nowadays. i’m sticking to my series 2 disco and my 2012 L322 Range Rover

British? Land Rover has been owned by India's Tata Motors since 2008. Doubtless, they have helped them increase sales and profit, but they have butt-fucked their legacy as working vehicles, especially as the Defender has been discontinued, hopefully, they will remain true to their heritage when the new Defender comes out, but I doubt it. Hate to say it, but I agree with Nathan, the new Disco is a pile of doggy doo doo, if you want a practical, reliable working vehicle.

He reason the petrol tows Morris due to weight because of EU regulation's the diesel has to be cast iron so it's heavy the need to keep it with under a gross train weight less than LGV

I'm disappointed with Land Rover, this SUV is going off the tradition of real 4X4 SUV´s of its era. I think that they are making this kind of cars more for the road and trips rather than off-roading and other stuff. And for the price... its expensive. The trunk door looks horrible, they need to change the design.

Looks like a slightly more elegant feature loaded Ford Explorer. I'll bet the Land Rover Disc still has some cheap plastic parts...inside...You want off-road buy a pick-up truck. SUV's are "compromises" wanting to be as useful as a pickup truck. I'd get a Ford Raptor for "off-roading" or a RAM Rebel TRX..
