I call Harkers Island home!! I lucky enough to live here. We fell in love with Harkers Island in 2014.

Loved growing up in this region, sun, surf, seafood. Mr Guthrie's accent indicates he is definitely original to the area. Folks from Harker's Island and Salter Path(Crystal Coast fishing village west of Harkers and Atlantic Beach) had a fierce rivalry back in the day, but many were related to one another. Often referred to as "high tiders", these people were ancestors of some of the original folks to inhabit the area. Family names like Salter, Guthrie, Frost, Willis are inherent to the area. Salter Path was unincorporated until some time in the late 80's and known for it's inhabitants being "squatters". The State of NC came along, threatened eviction if these folks did not prove ownership, pay back taxes etc, resulting in court battles but eventually the people were deeded their land and they remain to this day. The Roosevelt family "owned" the land and had condoned the squatters for years and years. My family's land was deeded from the Roosevelt's.
