    Those flat ribbon cables are really easy to damage when refitting. I've had a number of problems caused by slight damage and not pushing them into socket quite far enough. I'm now MUCH more careful with them. Anyway, excellent work once again Dave.

    • @UHF43
      @UHF43 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are a true nightmare. Sometimes, the socket is so tight you fear broking the ribbon if pushed too much, but it won't make good contact if not pushed enough. And there's a thin line between enough and too much.

      I'm working on a TD-709 which isn't too different, but more ribbons. I can't tell which end of them I'm supposed to pull on, or sometimes even which direction to pull (when they're at the edge of a PCB). Pretty frustrated too, knowing how delicate they can be. I'm grateful for this tutorial though: it answered several questions for me.

      The key is having a reference calibration tape with a known frequency (A=440Hz). The tape speed on the deck you're adjusting will only be as good as the reference tape's calibrated accuracy.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes need tape with 440 tone as that is the "A" string. I record and sell many 440 tapes recorded on my certified quartz lock deck. Remember the 2 pioneer 1250 that played perfect speed on the tape. My quartz lock is also bang on as is my td v1010.
      I have a reference tape from Sony that i vereified my deck on that i record them with.

    Neat video. I think the only difference between the TD-W317 and -318 is where they were sold (317 is US/Canada, 318 is everywhere else, but that includes 110/220 places so the voltages don't determine the part number). I have one of these with the A deck not playing, and from this video I can troubleshoot that the motor that lifts and spins the playback head isn't actuating for some reason. It looked like the one you had that wasn't working was doing the same thing--and I've noticed that when I try and reverse the playback head all the buttons stop working on both decks until I unplug it. I can't tell if you did anything to get it working other than removing the mechanism and operating the motor on a 5V power supply. I think I'm going in and removing the mechanism at this point to check it.

    I have a Pioneer dual deck with BLE (bias, level and Eq) tape calibration and it uses two alternating tones I don't know the frequencies of the tones though likely 400 and 10khz or somewhere around that it is a two header so just like the JVC it winds the tape back and uses the quality of the tones to adjust the BIAS and likely level and EQ too.
    The two machines I have don't blank the audio it uses to perform the calibration so if you listen you can hear the tones it you don't record on the tape after the calibration process completes. I have forgotten what the JVC calibration tones sound like I think it does two tones also but not alternating like the Pioneer. Low tone and then the high frequency tone afterwards. The JVC struggles because the head is badly worn and sometimes gives an error. I've searched for a replacement head to no avail. Oh well it is just for a hobby and fun to tinker with.

      @@12voltvids Isn't it odd only 7k for BIAS. I have two different model Sony decks one is a TC-FX7 and the other is a TC-FX705. Setting the azimuth according to the service manual is supposed to be a 6K tone. Doesn't seem like that would be very precise to me but that's what the service manual shows (X Y mode on the scope). Go figure, I've always heard 9k up to 15k for azimuth alignment starting with the lower tones working up from there. I used a very time consuming method because I saw "test tape" comparisons from well known manufacturers that didn't agree with each other. I'll tell ya my method if you want to know.

    For a dual deck it’s not badly built, large flywheels and 3 motors. Auto calibration and pitch control as well. JVC was not much of a popular tape deck brand, probably they were underrated.

      I dont recall now if they were Alan Parsons of what other group, they carried a rack of JVC KD-A77s as part of the recording equipment during shows. They did fine machines, with DD, Quartz or FG Servo. Of course at the bottom of the line .... you cant exepct much from any brand. And for boomboxes they were able to offer 2 motor full logic starting on the M60 (it was a mid-line boombox ... nothing too exiting). Nothing bad for early 80s

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theotherchannel2279 No that is MPX filter. FM tuners without an internal MPX filter will pass the 19KHz pilot tone uses for stereo demodulation. This 19KHz tone beats with the bias oscillator and causes noise. HX pro was a system devoloped by Bang and Ouflsen that reduces the bias current when high frequency high level audio is being recorded. Think loud crashing cymbals. The high frequency sound will add to the bias signal and over drive the tape. So by reducing the bias the perfect recording is achieved. I know of one machine (I have it) that the HX Pro is switchable. That is the superb JVC TDV1010. One of the finest cassette decks ever made, and when it was new it had a price to go with the performance. Sold in Canada for 1299.00 back in 1989 when it was released. In the US it was about 800USD, which was a ton of money for a cassette deck. Today they go for more than they were new.
