  • In this episode I am riding through a desert in Argentina and temperatures are soaring. The road is not easy and the hostel is closed - it wasn't one of my best days but that's also part of long distance motorcycle riding!

And the guy who sold her fuel at the filling station? Did you notice what he was doing when Noraly waved goodbye to him? He was engrossed with his phone! I am willing to bet he just dsdcovered Itchyboots' youtube channel and had just begun to watch it. Most people, like me, have no idea what the rest of their country looks like. Itchybooths' youtube videos is the only way to know some other parts of your country which you've never been to. Being alone in that gas station must have been a boring affair for the gas man. Itchyboots' videos would make his wait for the next customer a pleasant wait. An one day, if he can afford it, he'll take his family to a trip to those wonderful places in his country that Itchyboots has visited.

In 1972 I rode my air cooled Honda CB450 across the Mojave Desert at 49 degrees C or about 120 degrees F. I had anticipated some heat but was surprised by the intensity. I had replaced my engine oil prior to the journey from 15/30 to straight 50 weight oil anticipating the engine would run hotter than normal. I spent two days at that temperature camping on the way. It was totally exhausting and, like you, I could not truly appreciate the beauty of the topography of the desert and high mountains. The heat gave me a strong sense of my mortality and ever present danger. Truthfully I was ill prepared. It was experientially memorable in total. Thankfully I can appreciate the beauty of where you were through your video. Nothing was digital back then and I didn't even have a film camera. You will someday deeply appreciate the record you are keeping. Thank you for taking me alone for the ride.

True that. I spent three years out riding north America on my 1971 Harley. Did a buttload of dirt track on it. But the bikes can handle more than we can. Good looking out about the oil change ,I forgot to mention that.

What a day !!! The road under this heat was hard to ride... and the stop at the closed hostel must have been a hard deception. "No other option" and Dhanno's sound when starting again showed it was clearly making an effort too... And the room you found was the "cerise sur le gateau" as we say... You're a strong person ! Actually quite pleased to see Noraly struggle a bit on deep gravel with washboards. She, PM, and MDB usually make it look sooooo easy riding quickly on gravel. My riding (of heavy road bikes) on gravel here in NZ has felt more like this with deep angled ridges, washboards, and sometimes extreme camber being the norm. Top half of gearbox seldom used.

Thankfully I was able to patch the bikeup well enough for it to complete the holiday successfully. (Looked a bit ratty). And no injury to me. Well done with coping with all those pressures today. True bikers stop for others in trouble. I was driving north at night on the 395 in California when I saw a guy waving from the back of his car. He told me he & his 5 year old daughter had been stuck there for hours, but no one would stop. He just needed a tire iron which I do carry in my heavy kit. I gave it to him. Same thing happened in tne Mojave desert between Siberia & Bagdad on Route 66 during a hot summer day. This time it was four twenty-something's with a flat & no tools, tire plugs or water. They hadn't seen a car while they were there for two hours. I gave them water & repaired the tire. They were amazed you can repair a tire on the side of the road. Helpless babes!
I've stopped twice in rural areas to switch out my gloves to a lighter pair & women with children have stopped to see If I was okay. Once a woman with a nice new pick-up stopped to give me a ride to a repair shop. There are nice folks out there.
    There are exceptions . . .

Shared your fuel and accomodation anxiety from the comfort of an armchair in Cape Town! Grotty days make the good days even better ☺ Do Dhanno a favour and change the engine oil to fully synthetic (if you've not done so already). Aircooled engines take strain at low speeds in those temperatures. Compiments to RE, it never seemed to miss a beat. Have a better ride tomorrow. Happy Christmas from The Fairest Cape 😚

Well done you really are a determined lady, good idea to set off at dawn and do less distance each day, in such heat. Heat can be very dangerous when travelling by bike as it tends to creep up on you and you can lose concentration. Remember it is your journey and your enjoyment of it , that makes people follow you on TH-cam. Producing videos for us is a lot less important than your enjoyment and safety.

After 5 it will start to cool down as the sun gets lower. I have even crossed deserts at night to avoid the the terrible afternoon heat and sun.

When those young men thought a savior just came along that had the air they needed and then realized that she was so beautiful and it was itchy boots in person....well I think they’re probably still talking about it. It's interesting that each day you ride you set a destination and yet you fully enjoy the journey along the way, which I think most of us who follow your journey truly enjoy the most. And sometimes when we focus on the destination and become too familiar with our routine things can go astray and not go as expected. I emphathize with you about the heat and long day riding. Hopefully you restored your electrolytes. I rode in 40 C temperatures two years ago and remembered I had included in my panniers a package of very inexpensive painter's head socks (thin cotton blend covering). They cover your entire head all the way down the back and front to the lower part of your neck with a large opening for your eyes nose and mouth. I stopped and soaked one of them with cold water and placed it over my head then placed my helmet over top. This simple measure provided much relief! Thanks for all the time and effort you spend sharing your travels and thanks for stopping and helping those young men with their flat and reminded us all of the motorcyclist creed. Cheers from Canada.

Keep you electrolytes up. Also with jacket when in hot areas helps slow down water loss from wind / evaporation of sweat. Ride a oil cooled Suzuki 1500 and no problem at all in hot temp.

you did well to hold it together, tough with someone to lean on, even harder on your own. Also really glad you aren't tempted to ride without your gear i the heat. Keep at it....

The region between Salta, Santiago del Estero e Corrientes are very hot this time in the year. The ruta 16 is know as Chaco del Inferno and sometimes the police close the way/ruta/road until the end of the day to cool down the road and the air temp. Some days are difficult, its part of the trip. I broke 3 ribs near Mendoza e Uspallata and Las Flores in march 2019 but it was my best bike travel ever. And i will come bach march 2020. The ruta 412 near medonza is difficult too because there is deep ripio/gravel too. Very Nice video.

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going." ...... Actually, it is these tough patches that endear our rides even more, even though it is terrible then. Try keeping the heat level at a tolerable level (especially your body heat).
You are doing great, dear !

You can be proud of yourself today Noraly. You were so calm about the petrol situation, the heat of the day and the closed hostel. I am following you from Scotland where it is wet and cold most of the time as it is winter. Do ride earlier in the day if you can and keep on biking. Gx.

Happy new year and buy yourself some light colored long sleeve T-shirts (as one of the motorbikers with the punctured tire was wearing). This black color looks fashion but isn´t adequate for the tropics, imho.

Sometimes you get exhausted and it looks like the end of your trip will not come. It's natural to loose bits of trust in a good ending. Just then it is difficult to keep on going. You said you were complaining. I think you did'nt, because I know these feelings from hiking in the mountains. They looked the same to me. It is part of your yourney. It is part of your feelings in that precise moment. You made it. You kept going. You trusted your feelings in that moment. And that is a great thing. That is survival. xxx

Happy New year Noraly! My name is Ian and i'm from Argentina. You may be wondering way so many places looked deserted or abandoned? well thats it because in some regions of my country specially in Mendoza people take long naps or "siestas" as we call them because of the high temperatures. It usually goes from 12 pm up to 6pm. Also people tend to go to the petrol stations very early in the mornings as they start their labouring day. I hope you have a wonderful trip, wish you well. Ian

Great video Noraly! The landscape looks very similar to our western United States. You are doing so well, hang in there! I have ridden across the Mojave desert several times so I know how the heat can drain your strength. You will be revived after a good night's rest. Thanks for sharing your adventures! I will watch you to Alaska.

all my best wishes for this new year Noraly, if you did not have time to make videos on this difficult stage, we could attend your courage, once again, and I imagine what was the surprise of these young people broken down on the side of the road, to be helped by a pretty blonde, each time, it amuses me a lot, especially since the Argentines are very macho !!! here is an event which they will certainly not boast much! lol !!!
