From 9:21 for the next minute, or so, it feels to me like we are given a taste of eternity. Time seems to disappear. A harbinger of what is waiting for us in the second movement.
Some unique points to this very fine symphonic performance in orchestral sound and wonderful string section playing (those cellos) ever heard in performance of this concerto. Best in class overall. Thanks for sharing really enjoyed it.
Great how, like Richter, Mogilevsky SLOWS UP a bit at Climactic 7:00 and then marvelously AT THE VERY END of the Third Movement, too, BRAVO! I think Lang-Lang did the best First Movement Opening & Closing....(Mogilevsky messed up around 11:00)....I like his Second Movement closing which comes a bit closer to Weissenberg's Colossus. But my favorites remain Prats, Palvanov....and Richter, Weissenberg
Have you heard the recording by Earl Wild with Jascha Horenstein conducting. Faster tempi, close to Rachmaninoff's own and very clean. He can really play this piece! Mogilevsky was, however, the world's greatest pianist that nobody, except perhaps some pianists, had ever heard of. Beautiful playing in the slow movement and mostly impressive chops elsewhere. Why did he retire so young and confine himself to teaching?
@@MrKlemps -- Whether Rakh's 2nd or Die Meistersinger Vorspiel, my taste is toward slow and majestic, despite Rahkh's own faster preference. Study Palvanov's 2nd and his Scryabin too. Cheers from Acapulco!

Evgeny Mogilevsky died on January the 30th 2023. May he rest in peace , great piano player and a great human being.
This is a performance for the ages; supreme pianist Mogilevsky and sorcerer conductor Svetlanov work magic here.

I see I have a lot of catching up to do after several weeks without TH-cam...this is another treasure!
Happy New Year!
And the same to you!
Nice
Is he Alexander Mogilevsky's son? Two great artists, violinist and pianist
No, he is the great-nephew.
First rate performance. I have no problem watching either.

Musically impressive, but I cannot watch the pianist, his constant motion is nauseating
I agree--a wonderful and honest performance and an exceptional pianist--but I had to close my eyes because I was actually getting seasick!
Believe it's genetics. Some need to be in constant motion in spiritual observance of the universe..
