When I was little my mother used to have a small black iPod that could be disconnected to a radio. Every morning I would wake up and my mother would have already left for work so after getting ready I would take the iPod from the radio and grab my earbuds. I would listen to every single song that my mother had in the iPod and when it got to this very song I would burst out into tears. The reason for that was because it was only on weekends that I woke up besides my mother's sleeping body. I would get up make breakfast and clean the house while she slept. It was really the only time I got to see her in the morning. And of course my mother would wake up and make me take a break and during that break she would sing me this very song to send me to sleep. While I slept she would clean the rest of the house, make dinner and do laundry. Even after so many years and so many difficulties in my life she was always there to comfort me. When I was little my mother used to have a small black iPod that could be disconnected to a radio. Every morning I would wake up and my mother would have already left for work so after getting ready I would take the iPod from the radio and grab my earbuds. I would listen to every single song that my mother had in the iPod and when it got to this very song I would burst out into tears. The reason for that was because it was only on weekends that I woke up besides my mother's sleeping body. I would get up make breakfast and clean the house while she slept. It was really the only time I got to see her in the morning. And of course my mother would wake up and make me take a break and during that break she would sing me this very song to send me to sleep. While I slept she would clean the rest of the house, make dinner and do laundry. Even after so many years and so many difficulties in my life she was always there to comfort me. I could have never asked for a better mother. I love you Ma💕💕

his girlfriend never died though. this song is hella old, and they married 3 years ago (so happy for them)
To be fair Peter Freudenthaler never mentioned anything on this incident. But he said in an interview that he wrote this song in 20min on a Sunday afternoon while waiting for his GF (no mention if she was French or if she was the same person he married in 2018).
People just repeat that story because that add meaning to the song. They never truly make any research because the story is beautiful, tragic and poetic so we all want it to be true. (even if I'm happy that nobody dies in a car crash with a lemon tree)
