In English we were talking about the Latin root Gen meaning birth and origin, and how it works in the word genius. I said “so geniuses are born not created?” and my teacher said “Yes, that’s correct!” I died inside a little bit
Well, on one level it can mean that. It could just as easily mean that geniuses are those who create something entirely original - creators, not solely learners. In that sense, geniuses can't be created - that goes entirely against the idea of doing something original - you can't teach what so far does not exist, only a will to fill that space. Being a genius is about thinking outside of what everyone else has thought before; so, ingenuity isn't born or created. It's about thinking more broadly than ever before - in whatever field that may be. So no-one 'creates' a genius by oneself; we become them.
So in Latin, a “genius” was a guardian spirit that watched over newborn children (which is why it’s derived from gignere, to beget), but its definition has evolved to its current meaning. This is to say that, though genius originally did have birth connotation, it did not have “high talent” connotation.

8:21 this is so relatable as someone who has English as a second language. We learn heaps of stuff that later we discover that the native speakers don't actually use.
2:24 well, I've played the first book of Songs Without Words (Op 19) and basically songs have singing in them and actually apply for classical music as well ( in pop all music are songs and in classical music songs with lyrics are also songs.) The WITHOUT WORDS part is basically just like the lyrics have been removed, the songs without words are more of like the piano accompaniment to the singing if the singing existed, and since there are no words the piano also plays the singing part at the same time. The first songs without words is like a nightmare, you play controlled runs with only 2 fingers alternating on your l/r hand, whilst using the pinky to play the supposed singing part. Tedious and L A M E N T A B L E.
6:32 I’d rather have wings because what’s the point of playing you’re already the best you can be? You should always try to get better and better every day. I feel like playing wouldn’t be fun anymore if I already knew I could play anything I wanted to.
7:15 In grand pianos, the middle pedal (I dont remember what its called) works like a sustain pedal but only for the notes that were pressed before you press the pedal. After that, with the pedal down, these notes will be sustained, while every other note can be played staccato, for as long as the pedal is pressed
It's the "sostenuto" pedal that's usually on grands. I know some uprights have a "practice pedal" where the point of the pedal is be quiet enough not to annoy the neighbors. On an antique I was looking at (early 1900s Schimmel) the soft pedal and middle pedal were linked together mechanically.
@@4321user-_ You put a pedal there - I guess composers are going to use it! I don't think I've ever seen a composition that called specifically for the practice pedal though. I'm sort of curious now. PS: Info for everyone not in the know: The soft pedal shifts the action so that fewer strings are hit - so the sound is softer. The practice pedal lowers a physical barrier between the hammers and the strings to deaden the sound.
"23 seconds ago" is the fastest time I ever come here Edit: I don't want my comment to be out of topic of the video lol so here is my legit reaction to the video: WOW finally Ling-Ling 40 Hours!!
Hi Brett and Eddy! (Again) l've recently stumbled over your TH-cam channel. I recently started school, and I have a new Orchestra teacher this year. And she is OBSESSED with you guys. Everywhere, on our virtual classes, she has art of you guys on her PowerPoint presentations, all of our courses, on our school's "website", she has pictures of you guys. School has been very stressful for everyone and teachers, are the reasons online classes are even possible for everyone. So I wanted to surprise her. Her name is Courtney, we call her Ms. * Last name here *. If it's possible, if you could just say a little something to her. I'm not looking for attention, just hope to make her day. If you can't it's completely understandable. Thank you guys for keeping us entertained during quarantine. Great video!! Can you guys please make more of the: "Worst Violin _____" videos again? Thank you!!!
The right pedal is the sustain pedal. It makes the notes long. The left pedal is the soft pedal, it makes the notes quieter. The middle pedal is sometimes the practice pedal, which makes the notes REALLY quiet, but one a good quality piano, it's the sostenuto pedal, which sustains any keys that are being played when you press it.
About how tear-jerking stories in contests might cause you succeed or fail regardless of talent (not musical, but sends the message): My brother went for an audition for our country's version of Ninja Warrior (before they pick the contestants), and he passed the actual obstacle course all the way through, so he had the needed talent to compete. And yes, we saw him passing similar courses on other occasions. But then he had an interview in which he had to tell how sad and InTeReStInG his life is. Unfortunately he had a pretty ordinary and happy life with a functional family and no dramas. He got rejected. 🤷🏻♀️
4:31 according to this I’m a Lang luung I have created a new one for woodwinds with two u’s because we need so much air to blow our GOSH DARN INSTRUMENTS
2:12 so actually it´s a bit different. The original title of the works was, in german of course, "Lieder ohne Worte", which can be translated to "songs without words" in english. But in the other direction, it gets a bit tricky, because "songs" could also be translated into "Gesänge", if you were to be overly correct. A german "Lied" would be just like a piece of music, which can have a text, but it doesn´t have to, whereas the english "song" is very specified on having voice in it. So in conclusion, calling a symphony a song is completely wrong.
anyone wanting to know the middle pedal that mutes is a practice specific feature only some pianos have. The regular middle pedal is sostenuto (a special type of sustain) Its not upright specific and a lot of pianos have no middle pedal. 😊

I know some uprights have a "practice pedal" where the point of the pedal is be quiet enough not to annoy the neighbors. On an antique I was looking at (early 1900s Schimmel) the soft pedal and middle pedal were linked together mechanically.
@@4321user-_
You put a pedal there - I guess composers are going to use it!

:)
I'm sure there is a piece out there somewhere with "practice pedal" on it. I mean - "Piano Burning" exists.
@@MAMelby Lol, no one knows that Annea Lockwood piece. Somehow everyone knows Cage's 4'33" though

Hi Brett and Eddy!
(Again)
l've recently stumbled over your TH-cam channel.
Hi! You should try posting on Reddit, they might respond to that there if people upvote it enough. :)

Thank you!
As a teacher myself, I have to say that is very kind of you to do that for your orchestra teacher. Keep practicing ;-)

Thank you :D
Enjoy the rest of your day!
Pedals on the Piano: Left Pedal makes notes shorter, Right Pedal sustains the notes, Middle Pedal sustains and makes the notes short at the same time.
Middle pedal dampens them on every piano I’ve used
True
The right pedal is the sustain pedal. It makes the notes long. The left pedal is the soft pedal, it makes the notes quieter. The middle pedal is sometimes the practice pedal, which makes the notes REALLY quiet, but one a good quality piano, it's the sostenuto pedal, which sustains any keys that are being played when you press it.
Thank you guys. Have been really sick last night and today and you have really cheered me up and even got me to laugh. You rock
About how tear-jerking stories in contests might cause you succeed or fail regardless of talent (not musical, but sends the message):
My brother went for an audition for our country's version of Ninja Warrior (before they pick the contestants), and he passed the actual obstacle course all the way through, so he had the needed talent to compete. And yes, we saw him passing similar courses on other occasions.
But then he had an interview in which he had to tell how sad and InTeReStInG his life is.
Unfortunately he had a pretty ordinary and happy life with a functional family and no dramas. He got rejected. 🤷🏻♀️

most of the questionable video ideas are usually Eddy's, like the reading our fanfiction one...
Brett's going to have serious bizepts, if he keeps carrying that pyramid for every video

Flautist,can confirm
2:12 so actually it´s a bit different. The original title of the works was, in german of course, "Lieder ohne Worte", which can be translated to "songs without words" in english. But in the other direction, it gets a bit tricky, because "songs" could also be translated into "Gesänge", if you were to be overly correct. A german "Lied" would be just like a piece of music, which can have a text, but it doesn´t have to, whereas the english "song" is very specified on having voice in it.
So in conclusion, calling a symphony a song is completely wrong.
Thanks for the info, mate

anyone wanting to know the middle pedal that mutes is a practice specific feature only some pianos have. The regular middle pedal is sostenuto (a special type of sustain) Its not upright specific and a lot of pianos have no middle pedal. 😊
I hope everyone is having a good day
