    Man! It's not surprising that refs make so many honest mistakes, and the fans understand many correct rulings wrong! Tough business! Thanks for this insightful video. I hope I'll memorize these principles so I can better appreciate the games and refs' work.

       NBA level step thru = travel read rule 4 and rule 10.
      The nba travel rule is defined in rule 4. Rule 4 says traveling is progressing in any direction in excess of what’s written in rule 10.
      Rule 10 consists of rules 10a -10h If you exceed 10a OR 10b OR 10c etc it’s a travel. This means when you exceed one it’s an auto travel, you don’t need to exceed all of them.
      Rule 4 uses the word limit this means there is a maximum amount of progress you can do and it’s written in rule 10. So if you exceed anything in rule 10 it’s a travel.
      Rule 10d says after gather while progressing, you are allowed 2 steps to shoot pass or STOP. When you upfake to do the up and under, you choose to stop your progression. You are at your PROGRESSING LIMIT. So when you step thru and stand on one foot, you have established a new spot on the court. This is progressing again. You are not down where you pivot foot is anymore. This is PROGRESSING again. This by definition exceeds rule 10b.
      For example. Stand at the bottom of a stair case. Dribble a ball and progress to a stop at the bottom of a set of stairs. Now pivot one foot in front of you onto the first step. Lift the pivot foot and stand on one foot. You are now standing on the first step. You establish a new position on the stairs and have progressed towards the top of the stairs. The same thing happens during an up n under.
      In short:
      10b ALLOWS: progress 2 steps, pass, shoot, or stop.
      10b EXCEEDING: progress 2 steps, pass, shoot, or STOP. Progress again.
      This is what happens in an up and under move. This exceeds the progressing limits set in rule 10b
      Rule 10d does not say I can exceed rule 10b in order to perform 10d.

    Let’s say I catch the ball at the top of the key. Left foot is my pivot. I cross my right foot over and lift my left foot. Jump off the right and swing the ball to the wing. That’s legal? I guess the rule allows it but that getting called 100% of the time. Crazy how inconsistent it is

    • @bballbreakdown
      @bballbreakdown  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That definitely wouldn’t get called a travel.

    • @larrygriffiths3725
      @larrygriffiths3725 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      High School? NFHS rules? If you lift your pivot before the ball is out of your hands, it's a travel, if it's to start a dribble. HS refs LOVE this call around here. It's a huge advantage, so it really should be called 100% of the time.
      I'm not so sure about if you pass, I think you should be ok lifting the pivot foot as long as it doesn't come down (like a shot). I agree, that would be called a travel 100% of the time around here. Maybe refs are anticipating the dribble? Sometimes the way it's called in your area is more important than the rule.

    • @andrewmojzer2337
      @andrewmojzer2337 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Larry Griffiths your instinct is correct. It is travelling if the next move is to start a dribble. Legal if you are going into a shot or pass.

      Because listen, this gather step is only an nba thing. Zero has no value and you can’t step zero times so what it really is is that you can step three times ONLY in the nba (and whatever other professional leagues that abide to nba rules) but it’s two times anywhere else. I think they made this gather step because two steps weren’t enough for nba players since it almost always takes three steps to dunk so they allowed it for entertainment purposes.

    • @mrmaker92
      @mrmaker92 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Shwabbit I don’t get it. What is so difficult about the rule?? After establishing control of the ball through either palming the ball, pinning it to the body, putting the hand under the ball or grabbing it with both hands, the player has two steps left. So, the step on which he’s is establishing control of the ball is his ZERO/GATHER STEP.

If the CP3 high five with Harden's mum wasn't legal, would it be out of bounds if a defender is making contact with the ofensive ball handler while stepping out of bounds? I've see this happen at the baseline with no out of bounds call. What am I missing?

    On the backing violation, I think you forgot to define where the midcourt line belongs. From my understanding, the midcourt line is part of the backcourt (from this definition, the backcourt is always longer than the frontcourt), so maybe you should include scenarios where the player(s) step on the midcourt line in your rules explanation. As always, great job guys!

    5:14 confuses me a little. By FIBA rules if a foot is lifted it keeps its status until it is returned to the floor. Is this really different in by the NBA rules? I tried finding the rule in the NBA rule book, but it does not seem to address that issue. Until now I thought in this aspect it is the same rule in FIBA and NBA.
    Then it would be a front-to-back!

    • @ampecsu
      @ampecsu 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Touching the ball after going out of bounds....fine if forced out. fine off a rebound and a pass. fine even if only ONE foot is in and other is in the air. Also if you catch the ball in the air--you are where ever you jumped from ex. jump from out of bounds then you are in violation.

  • @cptfwiffo
    @cptfwiffo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good stuff. For the nitpicking guys:
    Unanswered questions:
    1) What happens when you dribble over the midcourt line, ball touches the frontcourt (so the ball is in the frontcourt), left foot touches the frontcourt, but right foot hasn't, but is lifted... and then lands back on the backcourt (and then you dribble back the backcourt).
    2) Is the midcourt line part of the backcourt, the frontcourt, or both?
    (i.e. if you're on the frontcourt and step on the line, is that backcourt violation? )
    (similarly, if you step on the line and the frontcourt with one foot, and the other foot and ball are then moved to the frontcourt, are you on the frontcourt, or do you still need to move your foot to the frontcourt?)
    As far as I know, midcourt line is part of the backcourt, and you need to have both feet and ball having touched the frontcourt to establish a frontcourt position

      And he's right. That's a travel. It should, however, be tolerated if it's not blatant, i.e. if you release the ball shortly after changing the pivot foot.
      I really don't get what Ronnie is talking about. Changing pivot feet is illegal by definition. (granted, I'm talking from a FIBA perspective, but would be shocked if that's any different in the NBA).

    • @comet60fps79
      @comet60fps79 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Immabeadolphin... Here is the simplest way to explain pivot foot rules to ur friend.... You can lift you pivot foot to shoot/dunk/layup/or to pass as long as the ball is gone before ur pivot foot comes back down. However u cannot lift your pivot foot before dribbling. You must begin to dribble. Meaning the ball needs to be heading down to the court and out of ur hand before u lift ur pivot foot. Simple

  • @GunterJPN

    Was hoping for a "hand is part of the ball" explanation, with the "high five" correlation, as well as in a rebound situation. If my hand is on the ball, and your hand pushes my hand to make the ball go out, it's out on you.
    Another one people always get wrong is the "hop travel." You can't jump off of and land on the same foot. Gather step is irrelevant.
    Along with the backcourt violation, I would have liked to see something on establishing inbounds. When the ball is going out, you can save it, step out, establish yourself inbounds again, and be the first person to touch the ball. Some people think you can't, others argue about whether it's one foot or two feet to establish inbounds.

    ALRIGHT! I finally gotta ask lol anybody could answer this question but I would really love to hear what coach has to say. So, when doing the jump stop I’ve been told if I pound the ball with my right hand I gotta jump off my left foot then land on two; only then I can pivot. Is that true? Or can I pound the ball with my right hand and jump off my right foot then land on two and still dribble? Which version of the two is the right way.

    • @MrCrystalm8
      @MrCrystalm8 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jimmy Tnmz both are legal, the first one is mechanically easier to do. (You can't dribble after the jump stop though or it will be called a double dribble violation).

    Coach, can I take my two steps and not release the ball for a layup/shot/pass.... Like take my two steps for a layup but then hold on to the ball to fake the defender, get him in the air and then release for the shot?

    • @bballbreakdown
      @bballbreakdown  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could, in theory, keep your foot up in the air and balance like that but.....

      BBALLBREAKDOWN ...but you doubt it's effectiveness?

  • @andrewm3674

    Quick Question! I you do the pivot move off of one foot after dribbling is it still legal? or is it only legal if you catch the ball and don't dribble??

  • @joshuagraham9126
    @joshuagraham9126 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What's the rule on out of bound/inbound plays? Like say I'm dribbling inbounds and lose control of the ball and I fall out of bounds, but the ball is still inbounds, I then go back inbounds set 2 feet back in. Can I continue dribbling?

    • @PapaMatt107
      @PapaMatt107 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope, you have to stay inbounds to have legal control of the ball....
      Otherwise, we won't see players like Dennis Rodman diving for loose balls to save a possession or play.

    • @bballbreakdown
      @bballbreakdown  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Damn. I edited this out but Ronnie showed it. If you touch it, like tap it back as you’re running, then run out of bounds, you’re allowed to come back in and grab it. Just need one foot down on the ground inbounds and the 2nd foot in the air

    • @PapaMatt107
      @PapaMatt107 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, I think you need to establish your "inbounds" status on the floor before you can touch the ball and have legal control of it.

    • @PedroMendes25CC
      @PedroMendes25CC 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      FIBA is different you have to establish 2 feet in. Same with front court/backcourt.

  • @macmacmakis
    @macmacmakis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Do those rules apply to FiBA as well??

    • @PedroMendes25CC
      @PedroMendes25CC 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Malandrakis Yes. Will have to double check the frontcourt/backcourt rulings but the gather step rules etc are all legal in FIBA

    • @aleksandarspasic6067
      @aleksandarspasic6067 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think frontcourt/backcourt rules have differences

    • @ericmac72

      Frontcourt/Backcourt status rules are the same at all levels of basketball...

    • @kaikaichen
      @kaikaichen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I recall, back the in the 2008 Olympics during the Gold Medal game, Deron Williams got called for a backcourt violation after taking a single step into the frontcourt while dribbling, then stepping back again. Mike Breen (the play-by-play commentator) then stated that the backcourt rules were different in FIBA compared to the NBA.
      So it's either that, or the International refs just suck. :P

    • @kenjylalotte7538
      @kenjylalotte7538 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it was different back then. I'm from France and if I'm not mistaken they updated FIBA rules last year so we can gather (step 0) like in the NBA, and you have to have the ball + both feet in the frontcourt to have frontcourt status and so it's not a backcourt violation anymore.

    I was always told that if I do the up and under I have to jump of both feet, I will get so many anoying travel calls If I dont : ( Is that a Europe vs NBA difference?? I think it is kind of odd. imagine you are pivoting at the three point line and then slowly jumping of your non-pivot foot to pass everybody will call me for travelling.

    • @Anon.G
      @Anon.G 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Show them a layup, the footwork of a layout is identical, just the direction of the movement is different. At the end of the layup, you end up lifting your pivot foot, just like the up and under.

    • @GhostRider-ms3dl
      @GhostRider-ms3dl 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      AtFirstIAmHuman FIBA basketball changed the rules last year adapting to the nba so It shouldn't be called a travel anywhere in the world. Unless referees don't know the new rules

    • @GhostRider-ms3dl
      @GhostRider-ms3dl 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      AtFirstIAmHuman furthermore as they say you can lift the pivot foot and shoot with one leg. What you can't do is yo put It back on the floor

    • @BcroG11
      @BcroG11 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Changing the pivot foot before releasing the ball (in an up & under situation) can't be legal. I accept that it should be tolerated to a certain extent (if it's not blatant), but legal?? No way. The move at 9:08 isn't legal either, because the jump stop in that situation is the second step in your 1-2 step move and you have to immediately pass or shot the ball after it. It's a travel otherwise.
      Granted, I'm talking from a FIBA perspective, but I really doubt that basics like these are any different in the NBA. I think I would have noticed it in all the years of watching it.

    • @PedroMendes25CC
      @PedroMendes25CC 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BcroG11 The up and under is fully legal don't have to hide it it's fundamental footwork.

    Great video coach. I was always curious about that backcourt violation in the back of my mind as I see Draymond keep catching it in the air like that.

  • @AND1StReEtBaLLeR93
    @AND1StReEtBaLLeR93 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    thank you for having an nba referee corroborate on the legality of the 1 legged up and under debate, it's a no-brainer by the rule book yet so many people strongly believe it is a travel (doesn't help when KG and GP also slate the move as a travel). I've heard people say "well then, you could just stay on one leg like a flamingo forever" - get out of your seat and try that firstly, it's a lot harder than you imagine to stay upright on the one foot without resulting in a walk, especially in a game of basketball you will just lose your balance instantly with contact resulting in a turnover.
