The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane (mono)

- On a very personal level, this is a very special item in my humble record collection. As you can see in the first picture, this copy of the "Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane" single by The Beatles was bought by a woman named Mary on February 17, 1967. That's the day in which this, perhaps the most important double A-side single ever, was released in its country of origin (four days before in the United States).
But what makes this record very special to me is that February 17, 1967, is also the day I was born. I have an eternal debt of gratitude with Mary, whoever she is, for leaving proof of what she did in this exact date.
The record isn't in the best condition. It has lots of groove distortion, particularly noticeable on "Penny Lane". But oh well, what it represents to me is more important than its sound quality.

The analogue mono mixes still stand as the best.
Nothing compares to the magic of The Beatles.

The mono recordings sound so much better
Its a tradition for me to go back to this rare ‘still up on youtube’ masterpiece
much more better than all the remasterings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The mono mixes are the best. They are the ones the Beatles approved of. They are the hits; the records we heard on the radio, the records we bought.
You know a band is great when they create a double sided hit about their neighborhood! The Greatest ever!!
I'm astounded that this has managed to remain on TH-cam for two years. Delighted that it has.
Undoubtedly the greatest 45rpm ever. What a vibes!
yeah 2 of the very best beatles songs on one single
would definitely have played it a lot
Special thanks to Sir Paul, for granting us a boon by not taking it down.
Well its just record label employees and the company requiring TH-cam to take down because of copyright infringement, not like Paul or anyone from the Band is sitting there, trying to annoy people by doin this.
@@ashith1297 Unlike Don Henley ROFLMAO
That version of Penny Lane is sublime.
Having grown up listening to The Beatles on a mono system, I pretty much agree that mono Beatle records are best. A true Beatlemaniac since Feb 64, there were only a few stereo record player systems. I listened to every Beatle record on mono. I was in my late teens when I had gotten a stereo system. That led to shutting off one channel to hear just the vocals, then the other to hear the music. I realize there's quite a bit more on each track, I'm just going with basics here.
Anyway....yeah, mono over stereo.
(In no way am I dissing stereo!)
The Beatles. The Gods of Rock n Roll!
You're doing great work! Don't want these mixes to be lost to the revisionism of the current holders.
Sometimes I think the Beatles’ mono mixes are better than the stereo ones.
Indeed
Cause mono is better then stereo. Ear proven fact.
The mono mixes were the only ones the Beatles cared about. They attended the mixing sessions and gave feedback. When it was time to mix the stereo versions, they split and left it to George Martin and Geoff Emerick to do it alone.
Sometimes? The story I heard was The Beatles hung out until the Mono mix was done and then put their OK on it and left the Stereo mix to the engineers . This was true until the White Album and the flip flop of that is true.
But, they are.
Just an example why these lads are greatest ever double sided prog rock hits
The gold standard of this pressing.
Probably the best single of all time, both sides are incredible. tnx for upload
It's unbelievable how this and please please me were both thrown away on the 1 album
Was penny lane on the A or B side? Thanks
Pretty sure penny lane is on A side
@@districttm that was my memory. I have it somewhere in my possession. I had read otherwise, so that was my confusion. Thanks.

The way...they were intended to be heard. The way...they would have been played over AM Radio, in 1967. Except for the missing, extra horn notes...at the end of 'Penny Lane'. Very nice.
I remember buying a copy of the Beatles "Rarities" on vinyl at a flea market back in the late 80s and hearing those extra horn notes for the first time. It added such a pleasant ending to the song.
I love the Beatles ❣️❤️👏
Here, there and everywhere the beatles are,,in my life,, too..lg from Germany beatles Fan Ellen 🥰✌
You're fortunate to post this. I tried posting one and it got blocked immediately.
Very glad the video hasn't been taken down yet, both Beatles songs are really good.
This what the Beatles where trying t articulate the feeling of being on LSD in the late 1960"s think I was in Germany 1970 when I heard this song. Every one was doing some kind of Drugs back then. I went to Germany to get away from the Anti Vietnam war and me being a Vietnam veteran. They did not like us they were afraid of us. RVN 68-69 An-khe Vietnam the TET offenses survivor.
Great work ! I love the single ! I bought it when it came out, so I guess that tells you how old I am ! At the time, I liked "Penny Lane" more but as I got older "Strawberry Fields" became my favorite ! Both should have been on Sgt Peppers album !
wait hang on-- are these BOTH mono mixes? they sound INCREDIBLE. cheers for this.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for your comment!
The mono mixes were as how the band intended them to be. They were actually present and had input on the mono mixes, whereas the same wasn't the case for the stereo mixes. Those were done as an afterthought by the record label.
In fact, both Lennon and McCartney complained about the subpar stereo mixes. McCartney in particular hated it when he was trying to point out a drum part on a song, and he and his friends couldn't hear it due to the drums being panned to the other speaker from what they were near. And Lennon famously said that you've never heard the band's vision unless it was in mono.
Excelente amigo, muchas gracias.. Saludos desde Sonora, México 👋👌✌️👍🙂
Con todo gusto. Me alegra que el video haya sido de su agrado. Muchas gracias por comentar. Un saludo.
Always and forever awesome.
I always wanted to walk in Strawberry fields with my loved one while this somehow plays out in the distance
On the day I was born (April 1, 1967), the Beatles were recording the Sgt. Pepper theme reprise, which sets us up for the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album closer, "A Day in the Life." It was the last track they recorded for the album.
i would kill to have this single in vinyl
You don't have to. Lol They sell them.
I'm amazed this video is still up! A good story with the date, Alvaro ;o) The 15 year-old me would have been queuing up to buy this single on or around this date. Unfortunately my singles from back in the day have been lost in house moves, so it's good to hear (and see) this - thanks for posting (and long may it be available)!
Thank you for your comment, Bob! Hopefully this video won't be blocked soon. We'll see.
I love the personal connection you have to this record, and the message that you spread of it in the description! Have an amazing day!
I really appreciate your kind comment. Thank you very much!
Timeless classics. Thank you for posting this.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful story with us. Such a treasure to hold on to.
2x best of The Beatles!
Very happy to see the use of an MP-500. The ART DJPRE is solid as well, though more budget oriented.
'"Penny Lane" is a song by The Beatles. It was written by Paul McCartney but credited to the Lennon-McCartney songwriting partnership. The song was created in response to John Lennon's "Strawberry Fields Forever", and its lyrics refer to a real street in Liverpool, England.'

John himself said that everything before The White Album should be listened to in mono, as those are the mixes that the Beatles themselves signed off; they weren't generally present for the stereo mixes.
Geniuses!!! Thank You for the posting. It's like a sonic light house and I was so lost.
Amazing video! I love soo much The Beatles.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for your comment!
Excellent quality, now that I listened to this vinyl, I can say that Penny Lane is my fave of these two
Thank u soooooooo much 4 putting this up... Best version
It sounds pretty good to me.
Mono sounds better to my ears, I hear detail that is lost in the stereo. Plus, as others said, The Beatles preferred mono.
Thanks for this. Great clarity. ... I made a CD including Strawberry Fields some years back for my brother off my original vinyl. I had trouble getting this song right because of the age and extensive playing of my album. After a while I admitted defeat, kept the best version I had, then went back and made a separate track of just assorted skips, pops and hisses for that authentic vinyl sound. The Skip Pop track somehow keeps getting added to various playlists. Now if I could just find my cheap transistor radio...
Thank you for your comments! I'm glad you enjoyed what you have found here.
Amazing video, I'm going to see if I can buy the single!
The 358th number one hit in Australia.
Awesome, many Thanks For Sharing 🤟😎
I'm a bit surprised to see your Beatles video, Alvaro. All my Beatles videos that i made years ago were blocked months after i uploaded them. I wonder if this Is a good sign?...
On a related subject, my Fleetwood Mac/Dreams video is online again, how about that? 🤪 I don't know for how long, though.
We are almost from the same age Alvaro, i'm from March 8, 1967. Apparently, 1967 was a very good year! 😋
I have been saving this video as soon as I've seen, 'cause I was waiting for the ban
Hi, Rui. I've just found your comment by accident. I wasn't notified. It's great to know we're practically the same age! Yes, 1967 was a good year. We couldn't really experience the 60s but we witnessed the 70s, which to is the best decade ever because of being a perfect middle point in terms of technology development: Technology didn't dominate our lives as it does today, but it wasn't very primitive either. I love the 70s, and we both arrived to this world just in time to enjoy them almost in full.
Let's see how long this video will be available. Didn't know that your "Dreams" video is back, which was expected considering that I could upload my recent "The Chain" video with no problems. Thank you for your comment, Rui!
It doesn't matter as long as
it sounds good.
Sff Best song on all story of music (include all times)
Wow
Mono is incredibly powerful....
You know I don't really see Beatles Vinyl play this much because of copyright BS. But at least I bought some of their singles for my record collection.
This is nice
the edit between the two separate takes of SFF at 01:11 is supernatural
gira y gira, mi cabeza también!
The mono track sounds better imao
I heard the edit the first time I heard the song and wondered what it was. A book on the recording sessions explained it.
Although you say the quality isn't great, I reckon it's still better than any of the original pressings I've managed to find thus far
Wait... is this better in mono?
Extrañado como todos!........ A veces pienso que hay ciertas canciones que no sufren bloqueos.
Quizá debería intentar publicar algunas canciones de The Beatles.
And to think that in England, this masterpiece was kept out of the #1 position on the charts by Englebert Humperdinck's "Release Me", who occupied the #1 slot. It was a bit different in the US , as the two sides charted separately, with "Penny Lane " going to #1 on Billboard, and "Strawberry Fields Forever" peaking at #12 on Billboard.
The 45 I have doesn't have the end piece where John says strawberry sauce or something like that
Cranberry.
Or, I
buried Paul!
👍👌🙏
It was a shame that this wasn’t included on sgt peppers
They never put previously released singles on their UK albums...

Is Penny Lane pitched up in the mono mix? It sounds different than stereo, but it's pretty cool
No that's distortion
Cabuloso hein " i buried Paul" . . .
"Cranberry sauce" is what John is actually saying
4:23
Makes you wonder of the mysterious existence of where these people are nowadays, or if they even still are alive, what happened to them? You might never know...
unless..
4:13 it sounds like "I'm very bored" or "i buried Paul" but those Beatles conspiracies of Paul. I am not sure why it sounds like that.
Honestly Penny lane sounds better in stereo because in mono it sounds very flat. while strawberry fields forever sounds good on mono
So how did you get around TH-cam copyright?
I wonder what ever happened to Mary, also did she end up donating this personally?
no need for stereo if you are absolutely brilliant
This was the first record I owned.
Strawberry fields in a penny lane evolved into Eleanor Rigby.
I almost always prefer stereo to mono, but the Beatles rarely work for me. You just can’t pan all drums to one side. Sometimes you ONLY have vocals on one side. That’s just not good enough.
The only thing I always find a bit annoying in this mono version is that vocals are somehow thin in SFF.
CAPITOL 5810.
How do you get away with this without getting muted? I started a similar channel a while back and my rips were getting muted before they were done uploading??
Thank you for your comment. i'd really like to be able to give you a satisfactory answer, but to me this is either a random situation or just good luck. I've tried uploading several Beatles tracks and some of them, like the ones in this video, are still watchable after a long time. But, for instance, "Helter Skelter" was instantly blocked. And "I Am The Walrus" was blocked after one week or so of being uploaded. I don't really know what's the blocking criteria here.
@@NothingLikeVinyl I was doing obscure jazz and blues, not even really popular stuff... I finally gave up since producing and uploading these videos is quite time consuming and more often than not, it was getting flagged and muted. Weird! Thanks for your reply!
prefiero más el mono al estereo

Mix mono tem muito menos reverb, mais limpo.❤
