    Liked the video and especially the narrative that went along with it. You told us the condition of the machine, what you were doing, and why you were doing it that way. If we wanted to watch 10 minutes of stump grinding we could and we then knew it would take that long. That is one of the things I wanted to know. Great video quality as well. Thanks!

    Excellent. I have around 100 smaller stumps on the property after clearing a few acres a couple years ago. I was seriously debating on buying this exact grinder, or to get a PTO grinder for my tractor. It also almost seemed I should get both since this will get into places the tractor can't fit, even though the tractor will be faster. Thanks for the video. This is the first time I've seen someone use the tool right.

    • @erikbostrom.9318
      @erikbostrom.9318 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You are best advised to start grinding 3 feet back from a big stump, make broad sweeps and clear away the loose soil you displace. Then as you approach the body of the stump you are grinding the large anchor roots and are low enough to grind the 'floor' of the stump from the side approach or at least get the floor without having to 'dig deep' for it. This way you will do some work clearing loose fluffy soil in the beginning and avoid finding yourself on top of a pile of chip-soil mix that is both preventing you from reaching your work and obscuring the location of the deeper stump.
      You will know what I mean when you get at it.

    Well done. I began stump grinding perhaps many years ago with a 13 HP unit that was a lot like yours. I used it for several years and they can be quite the workout. I have seen people rent units like yours, but unfortunately the rental companies didn't know enough about the stump grinding unit to replace or sharpen the grinding teeth so the customers ended up having a bad experience. Having sharp grinding teeth makes a huge difference.

    Like my son asking me what I'm doing and why. Those are the most important years to fill their heads with some serious knowledge. My son has been driving zero turns since he was five, because he was always asking me what and why. My son is 9 now and helps to cut the yard. He strangely loves helping do yard work and gets mad if I don't let him help. Especially if I'm using a zero turn.

    Thanks Banshee for the video. One thing I was wondering if you or anyone else here can help me with, is I'm thinking about renting one of these machines to grind a stump. It's actually quite a bit smaller of a tree than the one you ground. I would say maybe they're only 16" diameter max, maybe even as little as 12". The trick is, I have to get down further because i need to plant grass where they are. They are ornamental trees that are on mounds that come about 8-12' out of the ground, so not only do I need to take these root infested mounds down, but get I'm guessing 5-6" beneath the surrounding ground level. Do you think that is possible to do all that with a machine like this? I'm guessing the one I want to rent has similar specs. It's a Bluebird with a 14" cutter wheel.

  • @aaroninks
    @aaroninks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Keeping in mind this machine begins with new or newer sharp teeth. You’re not getting new teeth if you rent from homedepot. Keeping in mind he doesn’t grind below grade, only flush. So what’s the point of even doing this if you can’t plant grass or flowers when your done?. Watch any stump grinding video on TH-cam and observe the massive mulch pile left behind after grinding a foot below grade. This video there’s almost no mulch pile since he doesn’t go below grade. But you guys go ahead and go rent lol. When your arms are beat to death, and you’ve wasted 3/4 of a day with a worn out rental wreck give your local pro a call...

    • @wpog8453
      @wpog8453 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bud, unless it's rotten, an older stump is going to be much harder than a fresh cut green one. Once a hardwood stump dries and cures it's like concrete. Sounds like you had a lemon of a grinder or your teeth were dull

    • @blakeburdette7171
      @blakeburdette7171 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wpog8453 Not to argue, just stating facts. It was a 2017 Toro 13hp. Maybe the teeth were dull. But it was a Norfolk Island Pine and took a long time. Stump was huge. I should have got the larger one.

    • @blakeburdette7171
      @blakeburdette7171 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, I disagree with you on the rotten part. If it was rotten it would have chipped away, or decomposed a good bit. The fresh large tree was very difficult.

    • @wpog8453
      @wpog8453 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Blake B yes that what I was saying. Unless it was rotten, an aged stump will be harder. Cut a large tree and let it sit for about a year and it's as hard as it will ever be. But yes a rotten tree would obviously be softer. The tree in this video doesn't look rotten at all though. Teeth make a huge difference and in my experience rental companies neglect things like that all the time
