It showed that they are incredibly close to their destination and that was one final obstacle for them to overcome. In the original version, they could have easily found another way around the road or climbed along the telephone wires.
Buzz's last line in this scene is the cherry on the top. After all the chaos that has ensued, he says they're a whole lot closer to Woody just as the camera pans to Al's apartment building, hinting at the fact they were closer BEFORE crossing the road and causing so many accidents.
I’m guessing that whatever computer that original version was made on was meant to be the one that the final film would be made with until some point in production when they got a more powerful one and built off the original sequences
More than anything, the placement of "Oh well, we tried" is SO much funnier in the final picture, like that should DEFINITELY be the first quip after the busy road is revealed.
Also there's pauses and cuts between Rex saying that, as well as Buzz grabbing his tail and saying "we have to get across" it's better in the final version without cutting abd it all being one shot, moves faster and more funny
This brings back memories of reenacting this scene. Now rewatching it as an experienced driver I can confidently say that nobody would put themselves in a tailspin just to avoid small cones.
Considering how it’s the same sequence with the same animation, it’s surprising just how much better the new one is (goes to show small changes go a long way)

A lot of people are talking about the lighting being similar to Toy Story 1’s lighting style, and I can agree it is very similar; but I kind of prefer the lighting of the first one more as the brighter lighting style is more interesting and aesthetically pleasing to me. But the fact Al’s Toy Barn was closer in the final product I would agree is better pacing wise and makes the toys feel less cowardly when talking about how they will cross the road.
I like how they made the lighting softer and orange inside of the cones. The edgelight everyone has in the original version looks a little more dynamic, but doesn't really make any sense.
I like the film version of this scene better, as it makes more sense to have the Apartment and Al's Toy Barn right across from each other. The original just seems to almost be mostly them crossing the road from out of nowhere in the suburbs. And you probably wouldn't have known exactly where they were to head next after all that. So the film version shows more accuracy and progress on where they're headed. Also, I recognize the music in the original version is from the Chase sequence in the original film.
I now realise that a lot of the promotional material for Toy Story was using content from a now deleted version of the movie. The shot of Rex under the traffic marker at 0:38 is one such example with a secondary one being them all running. The poster I saw has the brick walls behind them, suggesting the suburbs setting from the deleted version of the scene.

Random Citizen: Well, I don't know who's behind all of this, but while I was taking a nice walk, I saw a bunch of traffic cones moving to cross the street. After that, I heard some voices talking about saving another toy.
Anyone notice that despite there being nothing but streetlights along the street in the original version, the pipe did NOT knock down one of them but instead it knocked down a telephone pole, of which there appear to be none of on that street. Other than that, it seems a lot of the animation was kept between the two, some of the dialogue was either different or rearranged, and of course the setting was changed. The sound effects are also completely different, in fact, most of them are more familiar to me than the ones used in the final scene. (though they probably used them as placeholders until they decided on the final sound effects)
I think is a good time to mention the character assassination and of buzz light year. This whole scene shows that he’s not an idiot and can think freely. While in toystory 4 he’s like a complete idiot always mentioning some inner voice bs.
This Toy story 2 is not what we know, it's a clichéd story and also done without a soul. But who saved Toy Story 2 that became what we know was John Leeseter and his team ❤

Was the original version from before the movie got deleted and redone? They certainly improved the landscape by making it a bustling city, more ideal for making it filled with so many cars.
It was not deleted and redone. They had a backup copy on a home computer. I'm not sure what this video is. Maybe a pre and post production version comparison.
Even though the original version looks better, it's really off when compared to new version. You can see a lot of lighting errors and inconsistencies in those scenes. (0:36, 0:39, 1:01) notice lighting was casted to the toys even though they're inside the cone. You can also notice how flat the cylinder was (1:29) and the street color was changed to much darker color, meaning there's no lighting applied there (compared that to 1:25). Before you said "it was the cylinder's shadow", the distance of the cylinder on the previous cut looks further, and the shadow shouldn't be casted that long enough. Also if it was casted, there should be patches of lighting applied in further distances on that particular scene.
I think i liked the original version because that version showed everything for example Buzz said the directions of Al's Toy Barn and it showed Mr. Potato Head in the cone and the pole that fell down was very different in the original version and the music was very different in the original version. The lighting in the original version reminds me of Toy Story 1. There were so many differences in the original version of this scene. So i have to say that i like the Original Version better than the New Version that they have now. :)
This is the great thing about CGI. You can take these models and their animations and put them into a completely different environment without too much effort.

You know toy story 2 the best toy story movie and sequel to this day not only did Pixar tell disney nah on the direct to video but years later found out the movie was deleted by accident but thank god the one worker at Pixar made a partial back up so imagine what the movie was originally going to look like befor they had to add stuff to make this movie come out its amazing how this happening made not only the best Pixar movie to date but it totally goes to show mistakes can make things better to bad we will never get to see what the original would of looked like with its deletion
They had a back up since someone worked from home since she had kids and when they saw the film the back up they thought it didn’t look good so they remade it in a year but kept some stuff

The thing is they were not completely satisfied with the final result, so they remade the movie. This is one of the scenes they decided to keep, but slightly different
I like the location better in the old one, the later being in a metropolis is a tad cliche where the old one looked more like where I'd imagine where Toy Story takes place around Andyvillle

Yknow I always felt like the lighting looked off in this scene. Obviously this was quite a late change in production so it explains why. Because whiles washed out, theres definitely better use of shadows/lighting in the original cut. Its something you can actually notice a few times in the first couple of movies from pixar. One I notice a lot is the city lighting for the end battle of Incredibles, which I think also had time constraints but mostly it seems that pixar used to just struggled at properly light large city scenes. One thing people don't talk about enough though is that honestly from the beginning, dreamworks was way better at light large 3D set pieces in comparison to Pixar, not enough credit is given to that. You look at say, the first two shrek films and most of the time they do actually look slightly better than pixar.

"Closer to woody" then shows where woody is in the opposite direction. One of those small details you might miss as a kid.

Does anyone have the toy story 1 and 2 dvd bundle with a error on toy story 2 where a scene merged into another movie that was rated R named high fidelity I heard its lost footage since the bundle was recalled and only 100 copies were sold and 80% were taken back to get exchanged

Was the original version from before the movie got deleted and redone? They certainly improved the landscape by making it a bustling city, more ideal for making it filled with so many cars.
It was not deleted and redone. They had a backup copy on a home computer. I'm not sure what this video is. Maybe a pre and post production version comparison.

When I saw Toy Story 2 I saw this deleted scene from the beginning with the new city
Even though the original version looks better, it's really off when compared to new version. You can see a lot of lighting errors and inconsistencies in those scenes. (0:36, 0:39, 1:01) notice lighting was casted to the toys even though they're inside the cone. You can also notice how flat the cylinder was (1:29) and the street color was changed to much darker color, meaning there's no lighting applied there (compared that to 1:25). Before you said "it was the cylinder's shadow", the distance of the cylinder on the previous cut looks further, and the shadow shouldn't be casted that long enough. Also if it was casted, there should be patches of lighting applied in further distances on that particular scene.

I think i liked the original version because that version showed everything for example Buzz said the directions of Al's Toy Barn and it showed Mr. Potato Head in the cone and the pole that fell down was very different in the original version and the music was very different in the original version. The lighting in the original version reminds me of Toy Story 1. There were so many differences in the original version of this scene. So i have to say that i like the Original Version better than the New Version that they have now. :)

I like the original version on the left because it has more lighting and much other stuff not shown in the final cut. It would've definitely worked for a film like Toy Story 2.

You know toy story 2 the best toy story movie and sequel to this day not only did Pixar tell disney nah on the direct to video but years later found out the movie was deleted by accident but thank god the one worker at Pixar made a partial back up so imagine what the movie was originally going to look like befor they had to add stuff to make this movie come out its amazing how this happening made not only the best Pixar movie to date but it totally goes to show mistakes can make things better to bad we will never get to see what the original would of looked like with its deletion

The thing is they were not completely satisfied with the final result, so they remade the movie. This is one of the scenes they decided to keep, but slightly different

Its kinda weird how companies can just casually george lucus their movies and get away with it.
Yknow I always felt like the lighting looked off in this scene. Obviously this was quite a late change in production so it explains why. Because whiles washed out, theres definitely better use of shadows/lighting in the original cut.
Its something you can actually notice a few times in the first couple of movies from pixar. One I notice a lot is the city lighting for the end battle of Incredibles, which I think also had time constraints but mostly it seems that pixar used to just struggled at properly light large city scenes.
One thing people don't talk about enough though is that honestly from the beginning, dreamworks was way better at light large 3D set pieces in comparison to Pixar, not enough credit is given to that. You look at say, the first two shrek films and most of the time they do actually look slightly better than pixar.
Ok my mom had me and my brother watch vhs tapes cuz we had no internet at the time (btw this takes place in 2015 I was like a baby) she gave us the old tapes that my older brother had in the 2000s
