I met Paul on the street in Toronto a few hours after their incredible concert...what a great guy, so personable. Unfortunately it was an unforgettable gig due to Malcolm having a heart attack on stage, and the concert ending early. But Paul was so kind to me when I asked if he was ok...I'll never forget that evening.
I am so glad that OMD is still active . I saw them 3 times since they got back together again. Their last two albums were as exciting as their past releases. They are just great song writers and awesome musicians. Sill full of energy.
I grew up in the 80s (born in ‘71), and I’ve never seen Pretty In Pink! Regardless, OMD has my ultimate musical respect, right up there with Depeche Mode and New Order for “electronic” bands from the era. Sailing The Seven Seas is my favorite, such a fantastic groove. And they seem like really nice guys. You get the best out of these artists in your interviews. Well done.
As much as I liked JH films, I often forget that "If You Leave" was the song to end PiP. It's to OMD's credit that this truly orchestral sounding (new wave romantic pop?) song stands alone and still gets played frequently on radio. Nostalgia not just for us 80s kids - but for younger gens to discover as well.💕
'Walk Tall' and 'All That Glitters' from the Sugar Tax album are both so exquisite, but perhaps OMD's greatest of all their love songs is 'Victory Waltz'; it truly rips away at the heart
Years ago my sister surprised me with Depeche Mode tickets. It said OMD would be the opener. I bought their best of album and instantly became a fan. They played a great show as well.
When this song”If You Leave “,came out by OMD, it was the song that described me in high school, in trying to deal with some of the issues with the girls in high school, and in particular a girl who I had asked out during Grad Night trip to Disneyland, and she rejected me because she was more interested in a guy that was physically abusing her. Now, it describes me still in having to deal with trying to understand females. I still don’t understand women today, except those who like to scam me either because of my money or my generosity and being a nice guy. Some songs are just timeless.
@@mikematteri7226 Yes. I am 12 years older than Professor Of Rock, so I have 1970s nostalgia similar like he has for the 1980s. So some trendy "if you remember" stuff he mentions are stuff I'd felt a bit too old to do, but others I could relate to. Have a nice weekend, Mike.
I don't know exactly why, but I always related this song to a girl I liked in my class (Laurie) from 7th grade all the way to graduation. I did have some marquee moments with her, but not exactly in the way I wanted. We were pretty much friends at school.
I used Don't You Forget About Me in my tribute to my grandmother. She was loved by everyone in her retirement community. That's not much of an exaggeration. It amazed me how loved she was. She was also a very loving and patient woman. The hard part of being popular in a retirement community is that very few people will remember her afterwards. Her children and grandchildren are the only ones who will know her. I wanted this amazing woman to be remembered.

I was 19 when I had my daughter in 1974 , we were very close. We listened to all of these hits together. John Hughes had his finger on the pulse of both of our generations. We grew up together. I'm going to be 68 tomorrow. She will be 49 in August. All of Adam's, " if you remember " resonates with me, but also with me living through my daughter's experiences too. Pretty in pink was a cool movie, I already owned the blue black satin brocade jacket that Ducky wore in the prom scene. I still own that tux jacket. I probably should get to selling those iconic 80s outfits. I also have a box of leg warmers. And I sincerely miss neon clothes. I loved neon pink. I dressed my daughter as cool as I could because I was the hippy outcast played by Allie Sheedy in Breakfast Club,( imagine more women/ teens identified with this character). Dressing my daughter like she was my doll. I look back and am embarrassed about my obsession with her looking good, more so than her grades. I became a high school teacher at 43. My daughter moved to California to pursue a career in the beauty industry. She is doing great. Meeting celebrities and taking care of their skin and make-up. Ultimately, she figured out that non-celebrities were more interesting and better clients. 1978, was a great year for music. Supertramp, Poco, Pink Floyd, Yes, Todd Rundgren, Dan Fogelberg, ❤ . We are such a lucky family.
*_Thank you for this!_* I just talked about _"If You Leave"_ on Instagram… When I first heard _"If You Leave"_ I just about flipped. I had been listening to OMD since about 1980, and my friends liked them when I played them, but I was the fanatic.¹ Then one day a friend runs up to me and says, _"Did you hear OMD's new song? It was on the radio!"_ I thought that was odd, given we were in the United States, but not in a big coastal city, which meant we rarely heard anything truly new wave or alternative on normal radio. Except maybe for 3 hours late Tuesday nights, thanks to me and a few other volunteers on the public radio station. Anywizzle, I remember driving along when it began to play on the radio. It was one of those perspective skewing moments one has in life. I say this because in that moment, I could swear I hadn't heard a better song. I was lucky enough to see them on their *Pacific Age* tour a year later. I say _"lucky enough"_ because I had to drive 11 hours in late November/early December snow from New Mexico to Colorado in a tiny red Fiat Bertone X1/9. 🌨️ *EDIT:* And thanks for mentioning _"Was It Something I Said."_ 🥰 Such a great video! Again, thank you! ··•●✺●•·· ¹ ─ I came to learn of them (and a handful of other bands that shaped my core musical aesthetic) because my best friend's older sister dated a college DJ in San Francisco. She came home one summer in 1980 with LP's and EP's from bands that would, as I said, become the very core of my musical aesthestic: _OMD, Ultravox, Wall of Voodoo, Talking Heads, The Cure, Devo, The B-52's,_ etc. *That exposure changed my life.*
At 52, I grew up with these movies and these tracks. I never tire of Hughes movies or music from the 80’s. Agree with the good professor, Hughes did “get” us.
Great episode, Adam. Yes, crazy they might be considered “one hit”. Saw them in Toronto last year (at Drake’s club!!!) and it was a great show. These guys still carry the room. Multi hit wonders to me. Secret, Souvenir, So In Love. Soooo good.
It’s easy if you’re not a fan of the band. I’m not even sure I could name another tune from them that I’ve heard, and I grew up back then. Not my cup of tea, but that’s how it goes. All depends on how you define “hit.”
@@stuartowens3506 Call it what you like, most folks can name only one of their songs. That’s “one hit” by definition. I’m not saying it’s a fair characterization, and I certainly don’t expect a fan to agree with it, but there it is. Moving on.
Enola Gay was fron their 2nd album Organisation. Andy McCluskey went on to manage Atomic Kitten. There first record Electricity was recorded in 10CC's old recording studio - strawberry studios. Martin Hannett produced it along side Joy Division's first album Unknown Pleasures. Their first album OMD had lines of rows jelly bean shaped cut outs so you could see the orange inner sleave through the blue album cover. It was designed by Peter Saville who also did Joy Divisions albums then later New Order's.

@@ProfessorofRock I didn’t until today. Back then I was mired in the 70’s musically. Not a bad place to be, but shunning musicians like this has hurt me. I am going to check out their music now.
John Hughes just 'got' teenagers wherever they were in the world, I loved his movies over here in the UK as a teenager in the 80's and OMD were also an awesome band with many great songs, they were most definitely not a one hit wonder in Europe. We went to see them last year when they were touring and they were magnificent, so many soundtracks to my younger days , people say we 50 plus year olds are just paying to see these bands to recapture our youth, I don't know about that but it does bring back memories of great times and that and watching a class band always will be worth a price of a ticket 💙
What a cool interview! I actually did not discover them until I borrowed a friend's copy of "Sugar Tax" and thought WOW, they are amazing! Love it they are back to bring some good music back to the world!
People always overlook the really cool and funky song "Do Wot You Do" by INXS when talking about Pretty in Pink soundtrack. But as far as OMD, I remember driving the 405 freeway in So Cal back in the day and just soaking in great music. KROQ with Richard Blade and the other great DJs was a great source to learn about up-and-coming New Wave bands. Thanks PoR for doing your part to keep all these memories fresh!!!
I've seen this band so many times in the US, recently came back from Britain to see three shows, and will see them again this fall. What I wouldn't do to hear Was it Something I Said and Goddess of Love live!
I saw them in SLC in 2018 and then again with my then 14 year old daughter in SLC in 2022!!! They are one of the BEST live concerts I have ever attended!!! I first discovered their catalogue beyond Pretty in Pink my freshman year in high school in 1993 when my friends older sister was leaving for college and gave me a box of CDs that included the greatest hits of OMD you showed here earlier, and other New Wave artists!! That box is what would set the tone for the rest of my life!!! Thank you for sharing another amazing classic group. I also love the 1975, which OMD exposed me to as well!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Just one thing....where do I get that 'Save Ferris' tshirt? This is a VITAL need to know question.....❤😊 ps....I can't even pick a movie sountrack....LOVE THEM ALL ❤❤❤
I just love that song. OMD kind of epitomized a good amount of the 80's sound and it's hard to think of a song that is more connected to a movie than "If You Leave" is to Pretty In Pink. I heard a lot of their music at the great dance clubs we had back then and really miss grooving to those songs. I'd already finished high school but I can see how that song would have been such a hit at the proms. Great interview, those guys are a riot. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁
I can still vividly remember hearing "If You Leave" for the first time. The promo 45 was mailed out with the trade newspaper Radio & Records, and I was a subscriber, even though I was just a college sophomore. The day it arrived, I was trying to work up the courage to ask out a girl I really liked, and it just wasn't coming. So, as I procrastinated, I put the new single on my turntable and immediately fell in love with the song. After that, yes, I finally summoned up the strength to dial the phone. Of course, the fairy tale ending would have us together, 37 years later. Alas, 'twas not to be. We never did become a couple. But, as the song says, "You always said we'd still be friends someday." We have kept in touch through the years, thanks to social media and all that. We even managed to get together two decades later when I visited friends in the same town where she was living. Every time I hear this song, I still think of her. And every time I think of her, I still hear this song. Ahhhhh, the power of music.
Thank You for this Adam!! OMD was one of the most under-rated bands of the '80s here in the US. l wish the US DJs gave them MORE air time. I remember OMD very well they were part of the soundtrack of my HS years from 1982-86. Thank You for this!!
If you leave was the one air time song I remember. Rock was changing to euro pop, and John Hughes had the recipe for synergy of his music movie and their hit. Win win. Thanks Adam.
so our Muzak system at work use to be on a station that played b side music or stuff that didn't really chart and OMD's Messages was on heavy rotation for a while...never tired of it.
Great interview with OMD. I agree with them that the double-A record should be "Enola Gay" and "Souvenir," two of my favorites. "Enola Gay" and "Tesla Girls" were the first songs I heard from the band (courtesy of my brother) and I fell in love with them.
I like their choices for their dream 45! John Films are something that you always show your kids, grandkids and nieces and nephews to show them that their highschool or teen problems are nothing new - - - We just had a soundtrack to ours!
The song is timeless, can’t say the same for the movie. They have some of the best signature songs of the eighties - from Maid of Orleans to Enola Gay. Some of my favorites Talking Loud and Clear, Joan of Arc and So in love. Haven’t listened to them for a decade, but certainly back in the day they were one of my favorite bands. Good to see them healthy and strong. Still have some old vinyl records of them, but for ease I’m streaming them now 😊 EDIT, I like the double A single, Souvenir didn’t make my special mention, but it is a nice sentimental tune… my feelings still remain.
I got to interview Paul and Andy in 1985 at the college radio station I worked at in Atlanta. The nicest guys ever, out of everone i interviewed during that time.
A local "Most Hits of the 80's" radio station posed the question this morning: "Which hit song from a movie soundtrack immediately has you thinking about the movie it came from?" I immediately thought of "Purple Rain". When it was released I thought it was OK but didn't attach any significant feelings about it. When I finally DID see the movie a decade or so later, the story of where the song came from and the circumstances surrounding its creation hit me emotionally and whenever I hear it now I'm immediately transported back into the movie to that sub-plot.
I love OMD so much! I’m so happy you mentioned songs from Sugar Tax, one of my favorite albums. I love Liberator and Universal, but they seem like they don’t exist for most people.
OMD Crush is one of my all-time favorite albums. Love it. As far as If You Leave, being a huge John Hughes fan, I of course love Pretty in Pink. And that soundtrack, which is awesome. I will say that I'm in Team Duckie camp. Never liked the ending of PIP the way it stands today; maybe she wouldn't have ended up with Duckie, but Blaine was blah. And the fact that he just gave up on her and then asks for forgiveness would make me pause if I was her. ANYWAY, I just wish we could actually SEE the original ending. The DVDs/Blu-Rays have teased at it, but they only talk about it. I want to see the footage! Anyway, thanks for making this video for one of my favorite films/soundtracks of the 80's and for OMD in particular!
I've been a fan since the fall of 85 (just before Pretty in Pink was released) when the radio played So in Love. My love for both it and If You Leave prompted me to by The Best of OMD a few years later. Not a bad song on that album, every track is awesome. I am glad to know the guys went on to create more new music afterward, even if they aren't recognized as the superstars they deserve to be.

Well done.
Spoiler alert: she picked the wrong guy
Great song thou
Andy's crescentic "ooooo..if you leave....don't look back" is timeless.
Amen! An indelible part of the 80s!
It gives me the chills every time. PERFECT song.
As much as I liked JH films, I often forget that "If You Leave" was the song to end PiP. It's to OMD's credit that this truly orchestral sounding (new wave romantic pop?) song stands alone and still gets played frequently on radio. Nostalgia not just for us 80s kids - but for younger gens to discover as well.💕
It’s very sophisticated and sleek in sound. That’s why it’s a wonderful song.
"don't you forget about me", I think we can all relate to the emotion of expendability. Great songs. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing; This OMD fan has been through much of that, too, I'm a feminist who's been told I'm easy prey and has never found a partner.
@@bobdavis4848 You are welcome. So many songs from the 80s are so timeless, and are so relevant even today.
What do you think happened to Laurie?
I used Don't You Forget About Me in my tribute to my grandmother. She was loved by everyone in her retirement community. That's not much of an exaggeration. It amazed me how loved she was. She was also a very loving and patient woman. The hard part of being popular in a retirement community is that very few people will remember her afterwards. Her children and grandchildren are the only ones who will know her. I wanted this amazing woman to be remembered.
Four of my fave OMD songs; "Maid of Orleans", "Secrets", "Talking Loud and Clear" and "Pandora's Box". All classics.
I learned something else by watching this video. OMD was definitely not a one hit wonder. They were one of the many great duos of the decade.
Amen! They were awesome. Great music.
@@ProfessorofRock Hey Professor, U do requests? Got a good one, The Michael Jackson guitarist "Orianthi" has a new album and has been doing several live performances... Not only is she smokin🔥hot🔥but her vocals/song writing is top tier as well as being an awesome shredder on guitar (amazing). I am interested in her story, how did she hook up w Michael Jackson band, and where has she been hiding all these years🤔BTW she still dose Black and White and sings Micheal's part.
So many great songs from them.
Yes! Loved all of their songs. Saw them in concert last war. Still sounded great. Dreaming is my favorite song of theirs.
OMD were the *original* synth-pop duo, back in the late 70s.
I love the story behind *Pretty in Pink*
& Great soundtrack. Love OMD
THanks!
*_Thank you for this!_* I just talked about _"If You Leave"_ on Instagram…
When I first heard _"If You Leave"_ I just about flipped. I had been listening to OMD since about 1980, and my friends liked them when I played them, but I was the fanatic.¹
Then one day a friend runs up to me and says, _"Did you hear OMD's new song?
*EDIT:* And thanks for mentioning _"Was It Something I Said."_ 🥰
Such a great video! Again, thank you!

¹ ─ I came to learn of them (and a handful of other bands that shaped my core musical aesthetic) because my best friend's older sister dated a college DJ in San Francisco.
Pandoras Box is my favorite OMD song , I think the entire Sugar Tax album is brilliant
At 52, I grew up with these movies and these tracks. I never tire of Hughes movies or music from the 80’s. Agree with the good professor, Hughes did “get” us.
I like OMD's Architecture and Morality. Brilliant album!
My favorite OMD song is Dreaming. Along with Thompson Twins (if you were here) they are the bands I go, "seriously? They did that one?" Bands.
Great job Adam. You always bring to best out of these under appreciated artists.
Thanks!
Great episode, Adam. Yes, crazy they might be considered “one hit”. Saw them in Toronto last year (at Drake’s club!!!) and it was a great show. These guys still carry the room.
Multi hit wonders to me. Secret, Souvenir, So In Love.
Soooo good.
Awesome! How was it?
The VERY LAST thing I would call OMD is, “one hit wonder.” Sooooo many great songs from these guys.
Yes!
It’s baffling how people even call them one hit wonders!
It’s easy if you’re not a fan of the band. I’m not even sure I could name another tune from them that I’ve heard, and I grew up back then. Not my cup of tea, but that’s how it goes. All depends on how you define “hit.”
@@rapid13 Four Top-40 hits in the US and Thirteen Top-20 in the UK. That’s more than a one-hit wonder by any definition.
@@stuartowens3506 Call it what you like, most folks can name only one of their songs. That’s “one hit” by definition. I’m not saying it’s a fair characterization, and I certainly don’t expect a fan to agree with it, but there it is. Moving on.
Loved this! These guys are awesome! We lost John Hughes way too soon. 💔
15 yo in 86’, this band brings back great memories. We were so free back then. I wouldn’t change it for anything.
The interviews are always amazing. They make me love bands again that I had almost forgotten. They sit there in the back of my head, and then I watch PoR, and they explode out again. It is more than nostalgia.
SUCH a HUGE fan of OMD!!! Brings back all the memories of living in LA as a teenager ❤❤❤
These guys have always been a guilty pleasure.
There are certain songs that made me an instant fan of the band. If You Leave is one of them. Thank you.
Always loved singing "If You Leave". And for whatever reason I'll always have a soft spot for the song "Dreaming"
Great interview once again Prof!! The Revelations Series really open ours eyes to songs we know but don’t know about. I really appreciate it.
Thanks Mark. Do you know OMD's catalog?
@@ProfessorofRock I didn’t until today. Back then I was mired in the 70’s musically. Not a bad place to be, but shunning musicians like this has hurt me. I am going to check out their music now.
@ProfessorofRock another fantastic 80s themed song expose from one of the all time 80s movies. Your nostalgia 80s stuff hits me right in the feels.
It brings me great joy to see Adam travel the world and meet his heroes, becoming ours.
OMD has been timeless for me!
So cool!
I love them.
The way this song was born is so romantic. What a story! ❤
Another great interview! Thank you Professor if Rock. Keep up the excellent work. ❤❤❤❤
Such a great band!
Secret is my favorite of theirs. And agreed on Sugar Tax - what an album!
I love Forever Live and Die. Thx again for the great backstory.
Thank Mark!
I think it's their best song by far and it's funny to think they wrote it in such a short time under such pressure 😆
My heart. One of my childhood heroes. I was inspired to play keyboards listening to all these 80s New Wave songs.
LOVE the Edward Hopper-inspired album cover to _Crush_ .
Thanks for mentioning the new stuff. Nothing will replace the classics, but honestly, their last few albums are incredible, and perhaps their best.
Awesome song. Sometimes, the best songs are the ones that come to you right away
was it something i said, glad you mentioned the song, my favourite omd!!! now i know!! Thank you!!👍👍👍
Boy this brought up all kinds of memories and emotions
Professor, another brilliant, BRILLIANT interview...☺💯
Listening to this as I'm packing up our basement...we're moving to a bigger house where i can blast my beloved 80s musoc to my hearts content WITHOUT the damn neighbours expressing their displeasure 😂...OMD rocks the soundtrack of my life.
Just one thing....where do I get that 'Save Ferris' tshirt? This is a VITAL need to know question.....❤😊
ps....I can't even pick a movie sountrack....LOVE THEM ALL ❤❤❤
I just love that song.
OMD got me hooked on Messages and Souvenir. The sound.
Thanks!
Just one wave of his magic wand, and Hughes captivates all of us once again.
Your best ever video imho! Thank you so much! '80s really rock!
so our Muzak system at work use to be on a station that played b side music or stuff that didn't really chart and OMD's Messages was on heavy rotation for a while...never tired of it.
THanks!
Great song.
Great interview with OMD. I agree with them that the double-A record should be "Enola Gay" and "Souvenir," two of my favorites. "Enola Gay" and "Tesla Girls" were the first songs I heard from the band (courtesy of my brother) and I fell in love with them.
That was such an amazing interview! Great job Professor of Rock!!!
@Official_professor_rock--_ what did I win?
I like their choices for their dream 45! John Films are something that you always show your kids, grandkids and nieces and nephews to show them that their highschool or teen problems are nothing new - - - We just had a soundtrack to ours!
Absolutely Loved this episode!! 😊
Still have some old vinyl records of them, but for ease I’m streaming them now 😊
EDIT, I like the double A single, Souvenir didn’t make my special mention, but it is a nice sentimental tune… my feelings still remain.
I had the Orchestral Manoeuvres in the dark album back in 82. Almost is my favorite track.
One of my favorite bands of all time!!! "Was it Something I Said" is the best song of the 90s... and never received AirPlay.
Glad that they are still rockin
OMD is in my top 5 favourite bands of all time... and that's coming from a guy that was heavily into the grunge scene back in the day!
I finally got to see OMD in 2015 @ their SF stop. Absolute magical night.
I still hear this song at least twice a day on one radio station here
I’ve loved Souvenir for DECADES!! Such a sweet melody…
Same!
Duckie was pretty cool!
Still love listening to OMD; never thought of them as a one hit wonder :)
