- Minor league baseball has a deep rooted history in American Culture - did you know that in 1949, there were over 59 leagues and 448 ball clubs?
As time wore on and competing inventions to keep us occupied like television and real dolls hit the market, this number gradually dwindled down to the current total of 160 teams today.
People moved on. Teams left town. More focus was put on the big league level so that Mike Trout could make enough money to hire a team of midgets to carry him around on their shoulders.
And some of the minor league teams that are left, play in pretty horrible stadiums. Maybe they are remnants of that era long past.
Maybe they were the result of poor planning, or lack of attention. Either way, today we’re going to look at the worst minor league ballparks in baseball, and that’s coming up, right after this.

they need to do better with renovations and upkeep, It's a nice layout to watch a game in and the field is well-kept, plus it's easy to get in and out of.
Toledo mud hens old stadium “ned skeldon” stadium was a converted horse racing track, and the players had to walk between the fans walkway area to get to the lockers... prett shitty for a triple-A stadium... but was awesome for autographs lol

Completely false anyone who actually goes there can tell you it's a great place to watch a game. Cheap, easy to get to, 2nd deck not pushed into the atmosphere by luxury boxes, most underrated stadium in the big leagues.

My sister and I are stadium-hoppers ,that visit stadiums around the country. I agree with most of these assessments, but I have to disagree about Daytona, which we visited while on a trip to F,orida. THe river's too salty (close to the ocean) and moves too much to attract mosquitoes. The odd architecture looks weird from above but once you are IN the stadium it works really well and you get a closer more intimate view of the game and interactions with the players before and after. The views are STUNNING. Ospreys routinely fly over as do herons. The wind blows from the sea and takes care of the heat. Night games are lovely. Food is good. Staff are hugely hospitable. It's very nice overall compared to some.

Municipal stadium for the Hagerstown Suns. Built in 1930, the oldest minor league stadium. It is truly terrible. Definitely the worst stadium in my books

Bosse Field, Evansville, Indiana, home of the Evansville Otters, Frontier League, is probably the oldest minor league stadium with a full season schedule.
Three stadiums that should definitely be on the best list are Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio, Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio, & Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio. All of them are great ballparks with many unique features.

The Las Vegas Lights FC of the USLC moved into Cashman
Everything is hot in the summer out here. The grassy area was great for the kids, food & parking was reasonable. Yes it was old but I remember The Oakland Colesium being much more run down. Now we have a new stadium to sweat in.
As someone who lives in Vegas… Cashman Field is old and worn out from its glory days. It’s still cool to go watch a ballgame or two there, even though the 51s moved out. They host soccer games now. I can’t deny that it’s old and sucks lol
@Benny Bolin I used to live in Las Vegas and went to a bunch of Stars and 51s games as a kid and once in the times I’ve been back to visit family there. I definitely remember the games being fun and every one I went to was a close one, although often times I lost sight of the ball when it was hit. I also remember not just the concessions but the bathrooms were rather trashy. Definitely hope their new ballpark is a much better venue!

The ballpark is old, being a WPA project that first opened in 1942. But it still has the minor league "charm", including watching future Giants play, and decent food, like "Turkey Mike's" BBQ.

At the Daytona tortugas game last night they gave out 6/9 shirts with #nice on the back
I went to many 51s games at cashman growing up, and you'd be hard pressed to see more than 1 hr a game. The outfield walls were way too tall, and the center field wall was incredibly far. But despite being absolute garbage, it was still the host to many of my favorite early baseball memories. That being said, the new stadium is 100 times better.
Living in Las Vegas and having been to a number of games at Cashman Field, I completely agree with its #1 spot on this list. A couple of amenities that were left out were that the batting cage was literally in the parking lot, and the home and visiting teams shared a clubhouse. I also work for the Nevada prison system, so I can also confirm that the park had all the ambiance of my workplace. The park was also notable for game day atmosphere, highlighted by the homeless camps that you had to drive to in order to get there. You also had to climb a massive hill to get to your car after the game.
One minor correction: The team did not leave town. After years of having major league affiliates leave town and being last choice among AAA cities because the ballpark sucked, the city finally replaced Cashman Field with a new ballpark in the Summerlin area, home of the Las Vegas Aviators of the Pacific Coast League.

@Jason Hill It was da bomb when it opened. Worth pointing out that when it was built.....no public funds were used. Richmond wasnt on the hook for many years of financing. The group that spearheaded this project should be thanked for what they did and not sucking taxpayer money up to pay for it. It is disheartening that this can't be done again. BTW....the Shockoe proposal was insane....only supported by the restaurants/bars down there. Building a stadium in an urban area with only 2 lane surface streets would have been a disaster. Just my 2 cents.....

Correction for 7:06 - The Camden Riversharks were not a Class-A team. They were in another league (Atlantic League of Professional Baseball) altogether. Class-A is an MiLB thing.

What's really sad about Camden is that it has been heavily redeveloped. A friend of mine was trying to find an apartment there, and there's a two-year waiting list as the place has become desirable.
Been to both SJ Muni and Robinson Park and although the stands aren't new the grandstands are very close to the infield and gives you the feel of
what minor league parks were like pre-1980's without the induced nostalgia of the places built since the early 90's.
One place you missed is the old Beehive Field in New Britain Ct. - buggy, cramped, cheaply built and the home of Mr. Cheap - Joe Buzas who made

I’ve played on the Elizabethton twins field and I remembered it sucking bad. The grass was always dead and had tons of rock in the out field.
I'm in Korea. When I lived in Pohang, we had a baseball stadium, but no team. When Daegu would play against Busan, they'd have the game in Pohang. Daegu is about 1 hr east and used to be the capital of the province and Busan is 2hrs south and is the biggest city in the old, Uber-province (now split into North and South).
Since, they had no team, they didn't bother with stuff like food stands. It was different being at a game in a pro league where you could call out for food deliveries to come to the stadium.
And different how people in Korea and Japan will clap less than they just bring tube shaped balloons that they smack together all the time.

san jose ballpark is actually quite nice. under the stands has a bunch of concessions and games for kids and theres lots of parking and i have some profound childhood memories in that lazy cement compound :')
I would also add Pohlman Field in Beloit, WI.
When I went there for a game last summer, the scoreboard wasn’t working correctly and one of the picnic tables that was part of the club seating was broken.
For your best minor league ballparks, I suggest Principal Park, home of the Iowa Cubs. Built in 1992 and renovated in 2006, it's widely considered to have one of, if not the best playing surfaces in minor league baseball. It's always a really friendly and welcoming environment, and has a great view of the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers

I have a lot of good memories at Greer Stadium. Looking back, it was dangerous to walk from the car to the stadium- no lights in the parking lot
He summed up Richmond quite well. Great fan support at the games. Shitty residents blocking a new stadium elsewhere. Irritated fans. The management of the Flying Squirrels really deserves a lot of credit for generating enthusiasm for the team. I'd even be happy if they build a new stadium in the same spot. A LOT of Richmonders just want baseball. I hope we don't lose the Squirrels like we lost the Braves.

They were originally going get their own nickname after they moved but the success of the Washington Nationals made them keep the current name.

Should have listed Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, Alabama. Named for a former Huntsville mayor, "The Joe" was fairly much a dump from the day it opened in 1985. Built to minimum standards, in it's first season the field had bad drainage and was - literally - a swamp; outfielders splashed up water running to catch a fly and ground balls came to a screeching halt once leaving the infield. (In one game some of the players of the Huntsville Stars came out in protest wearing ski vests, water wings, and toy floats.)
The field drainage problems were in time corrected, but the city and owners skimped on maintenance over the years; a situation that intensified when the Stars were sold to a New York real-estate mogul who never even visited Huntsville. At one point, at least 20% of the seats were damaged; the seats were eventually replaced. The Stars in the end moved to Biloxi, Mississippi and Joe Davis was closed. The Southern League informed Huntsville that if they wanted another Double A team a new stadium would have to be built that met modern standards; simply renovating Joe Davis Stadium was out of the question.
In due course, a new stadium, sponsored named Toyota Stadium, was built in Madison, AL, a suburb just west of Huntsville. The new AA team was slated to begin playing in the new Toyota Stadium in April 2020. Of course, the COVID pandemic shut everything down that year. As for "The Joe," the baseball field and most of the old stands were removed and repurposed as a municipal football/soccer stadium.

I gotta mention the stadium for the Harrisburg Suns. They handed out umbrellas when I went there even though it wasn't raining. We realized what they were for during the fireworks display after the game. The fireworks shocked the local mayfly population, causing their dead bodies to fall from the sky like a plague.
You forgot to mention that Jackie Robinson Ballpark is on the National Register of Historic Places.

I'm certain the Golden Knights will be up near the top of the list. With a top-notch restaurant that splits the two rinks, City National Arena is one fine practice facility...and hosts the UNLV Rebels hockey club as well (love seeing UNLV grow from those games with only 5 rows of wooden bleachers on Flamingo Road..to now a full grown arena in Summerlin!).
It should be noted that Herschel Greer Stadium and Cashman Field have been replaced by newer stadiums for their respective AAA-clubs; both clubs are doing well in their new venues.

Hey man I am from Bakersfield and I Can confirm Sam Lynn ballpark is one of the worst parks that I’ve ever been too. Sam Lynn is broken down, hot, dirty as all hell and of course you have no shade and must face the scorching sun during day games. (Of course our team name was the BLAZE) But it’s still the ballpark I grew up with and what really got me into baseball.
As a fellow Northern Virginian and Prince William County resident, thank you for including the P-Nats stadium. That place is a terrible park that is offset by a fun team. They could have built a new stadium a few years ago. PWC just has this weird fetish of cramming housing developments in every nook and cranny possible.

Was a frequent visitor to Cashman Field. The fans and the gameday experience, including the weird PA Announcer, made it very enjoyable. However, the stadium did not fit the caliber of a city like Las Vegas. The new one in Summerlin is what this organization deserves!
How cool that both the stadiums in the cities I used to live in: Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach (where I Grew Up) and the Diamond in Richmond (where I currently Live) made the list! They might be crappy...But still charming in their own way!

The Aviators new home at Las Vegas Ballpark up in Summerlin is LEGIT. 💯 Attended the third ever game there and was welcomed to an incredible atmosphere! With a pool out in right center field, and an enormous scoreboard butted up against City National Arena (Vegas Golden Knights practice facility...another gem), LVB is the blueprint for what all minor league ballparks are now striving for.

I used to go to Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown yearly from 1980 to the mid nineties! It was old and dated but enjoyed the park and had a good time whenever I was there. It's is a real throwback!
If I had seen the suggestions when they were open, I would’ve said Pohlman Field in Beloit. Basically a city park with extra seats, but hey, the beer selection is good!

I grew up near the San Jose stadium and went to games as a kid. Absolutely get why it would be here since the stadium is really old and the views aren't always the best, but my experiences there have always been good overall, especially the evening games. Best part is being super close to the field no matter where you are sitting. So getting to see top prospects like Joey Bart up close makes the experience great.
With Campbell's Field, the neighborhood really killed it. It was s such a nice ballpark, especially the bridge beyond the outfield

Richmond Flying Squirrels season ticket holder here. Boy did you call it on The Diamond, and you were way too kind regarding the city's screwing up building a replacement. We're under the gun again now, because with Major League Baseball's taking over the farm systems, it's been strongly hinted that we've got about four season to come up with something better, or the Flying Squirrels are going to have to move somewhere else to keep their MLB affiliation. And no, they don't want to leave.

Luckily for the Las Vegas team they're moving into a new park this year. I have fond memories of Cashman because I grew up going there and worked there but it was bad.
Wasn't in a good part of town either and the field was generally pretty rough.
I can go further on Cashman Field... There was no plumbing in the umpires room...for the press area...nor in the visitor's locker room... These things were discovered while I was umpiring a midnight rec league that followed a few hours after the games ended...

The Camden Riversharks had good attendence considering that they were in the Atlantic league and across the river from the Phillies. They were averaging around 3,500 fans with above 4,000 for the first few years. That is about what the Blue Rocks were doing before covid. The area they were in is a popular destination, it really isn't what you think of when you hear Camden. The only reason the stadium was destroyed is because of George Norcross, he wanted the land. The county jacked up lease payments to force out the team. And it was replaced with a smaller college baseball stadium.

While the Diamond in Richmond, VA made the list, I do find it cool they designed the grandstand to look like the seating in Fulton County Stadium. It kind of shows how dated the stadium is, though.

Jackie Robinson Ballpark isn’t too bad. Their night games start at 7 and are quite cool with the breeze by the beach. No mosquito issues and this just had a big revamp of the playing field. The Tortugas owner is doing a lot of great things in Daytona

Ok so I wouldn't say that the ballpark ITSELF is bad, but, the ballpark where the Kane County Cougars play in Aurora does have one HORRID feature: the majority of the stadium parking is A MILLION GODDAMN MILES from the park. On a nice day this is [barely] bearable, but if it's hot, or rainy, or buggy, GAWD DAYUM it sucks.
