    I only heard of this movie because Neil Patrick Harris slams it for a chapter in his biography. He talks about how the director made him cry by blaming him for the possible failure of the movie before they finished filming and processing it after his positive experiences acting in other movies. This movie literally represents the loss of innocence for its star.
    But hey at least its child stars had a career after this? From the clips NPH does seem to be giving it his all? Which kind of explains how the director’s career went in the opposite direction.
    Anyway great job picking it apart as always.

    • @Tareltonlives
      @Tareltonlives 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Wow, poor Neil! I'm glad he was able to have a career after this.

      Wow, how professional to blame a child for the failure of a shitty movie. No wonder the director went on to do...Literally nothing.

    What I see, what I think happened is the scripts actually had Billy had lost his parents at some point. It would explain how death is a theme in this movie. At some point they changed that to "Gone for Vacation" but left the rest of it in.
    But hey that's just a theory. A Film Theory!

    • @AllisonPregler
      @AllisonPregler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Sheb Woolley was my childhood pal’s great uncle - his mom would ask if I knew the song, being an impossible to impress teen at the time meant I wasn’t terribly bowled over that a friend’s relative had written a goofy novelty song 30 years before then. However, if I’d known he was the guy behind the Wilhelm scream which was used in Star Wars I would’ve LOST MY SHIT -!

  • @Dreadjaws

    Fun fact: the lady in the horse wasn't actually part of the movie. The production had lost sight of the stunt double in the costume and asked her, which is why she seemed disinterested at first, but then when she found it she realized and took him with her, not realizing the cameras were rolling all the time.

    The good old days of late-80 1950s nostalgia theme kid flicks. Put in some 57 Chevys, lots of poodle skirts, vague 50s-inspired sets, and tons of cheaply licensed music from one-hit wonders milking their 30 year old songs for one more check!

    Wooooooow. This is really digging into the recesses of my mind! I remember watching ads for "the VHS release" of this movie, and *Batteries Not Included in front of kid movies my parents would rent for me from Blockbuster back in the early 90s! I would always get the two confused because I think both movies had similar premises. I don't remember ever watching this movie, and I *think* I may have caught a bit of BNI on a random TV airing one evening, but it was _so_ long ago I really don't remember.
    All I *do* remember is listening to the FPPE song on a complilation record of children's song my grandmother owned (I remember one of the songs that was on that record, that they used as the album art, was called "Dance with me Henry"), and it was also a song selection on a jukebox at one of the McDonald's my mom would occasionally take my brother and I, sometimes with my childhood best friend, to for lunch or dinner.
    Edit: Wow! I forgot how much a part of my childhood Little Richard was! I didn't know he was in this movie! But I do remember them using Little Richard's "Tutti Fruitti" on The Brave Little Toaster soundtrack, and when he showed up on the We're Back!: A Dinosaur's Story soundtrack performing the theme song(?) of the movie "Roll Back The Rock To The Dawn/End of Time", and the oft-forgotten Mother Goose Rock n' Rhyme where he showed up as Old King Cole!

    1. A very young NPH and Dustin Diamond (pre-doogie and saved by the bell I believe) .
    2. The ridiculous alien costume. Wow just wow.
    3. The paint by numbers conflict involving a mean landlord evicting helpless old folks.
    4. Inexplicable cameo of Little Richard singing the titular song.

And NPH's bad lip syncing to a voice that isn't even close to his was another cringe worthy moment I should have mentioned. Also he totally had a baby mullet in this and, well it was the 80s so I need to just give that a pass.
      I remember reading NPH's autobiography awhile back and his only comment about this movie was how unpleasant it was to work with Dustin Diamond. They did NOT get along apparently.

    “Nope” brought me here, as Antlers Holst (Michael Wincott) sings the novelty song with a flat, menacing voice, and this ignited souvenirs of seeing this film (“Purple People Eater”) when I was a child… really weird (both the film and the memory ignition) 🤔

    7:55 Boom mike in shot! And OMG, Shelley Winters? They got an Oscar-winner to be in this POS? That's really sad. This is another one of those '80s comedies where everyone is a cartoon character and nobody behaves remotely like a believable human being. Then it introduces a fantasy element, like this alien, but it doesn't matter, your suspension of disbelief has already flown out the window, because the alien is no more ridiculous than the world it's being dropped into.

Seeing as how "Temple" is associated with Judaism, and "Church" is a Christian thing... this comes off as kinda antisemitic, regardless of whether it's "just a joke" (which in itself is an incredibly weak excuse and doesn't change the fact that it's still a bad joke).

    ALL THESE YEARS I ASSUMED THIS WAS A MOVIE ABOUT "Mr. Munch - The Purple Pizza Eater" FROM CHUCK E. CHEESE!!! My mind is blown!!! As a kid born in 1986 I ALMOST saw this movie at my cousins house. He rented it regularly so he must have liked it (I owned a copy of "Mac & Me" so I am not gonna judge lol) and he wanted me to watch it with him. I was bummed out since we were playing the "NES" and he rented "Rampage" and I was LOVING IT! So I was not really in the mood for a movie. I knew I was being unfair so I eventually caved and said lets watch it. My parents came to get me as the movie started so I never saw the creature... All my life I have been living a lie lmao!
