Anyone who says this is a mediocre solo is nuts. Ian Paice could own any commenter on here. He has an incredible feel and groove for the drums. Amazing speed on the snare. He is a jazz drummer and a rock drummer fused into one.
The one and only Ian Paice, in his trademark funky, jazzy style. Not bad for a kid from Nottingham, who never had a teacher, and learned from books and records.
When i read we had never had a formal lesson because no teacher was available in his location area i was impressed ....can't believe this talent without formal training although i guess his father band had helped him to develop his style and ability...cheers from Argentina from an all time die hard Ian fan.

Fucking amazing - he makes ... he 'pulls' the same sound out of the drums as though - if I closed my eyes there were parts I could have sworn were recorded for the Made In Japan double album in '73. Just goes to show what an absolute individual voice he is/has with his instrument. One of the greatest British drummers ever: Bonham, Moon, Paice, Bruford, R. Taylor (Queen), C. Palmer, B. Barlow... I know I'm leaving out a million others, but I just love Ian Paice.
He was the ever present common denominator of Deep Purple for the entire time. And he was always right in what he played. With Mark 2 the foundation of the greatest group of pure rock musicians ever..

not too many drummers of his generation and genre and background get invitations to festivals as these..in fact , i don't know of any pioneers of rock drumming from that era who'd have the balls to do so..paice has his limits, but is a fantastic drummer and tremendously creative..anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what great drumming is all about !

first of all I was listening to made in japan when it came out. lil Ian's drumming on the mule is a geat work of skill and something that stuck in my head for decades. Their first hit in 1968 Hush is showing a drummer way ahead of his time. No doubt the left handed buddy rich of rock music drum solo.
thats the best recent solo ive heard from ip. i still wish hed do more with his neat arrangement of toms; with his hands he could do some awesome melodic stuff!
Ian es un sutil conglomerado de matices. Si se reproduce el video a 0,25, se observa que en velocidad normal todo parece igual, no así a lenta velocidad. Uno de los mejores de la historia.
lefty kits look so crazy xD glad i stumbled on this guy while looknig for snare rudiment videos. ive never been into classic rock much but im definately going to have to find some more of him. ^_^
If you think about it, out of all the members in bands out there, he may have one of the longest careers of playing in one band continually, and never leaving. From 1968, all the way to the present day. Only other members I can think of would be Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts of The Stones
I agree with Gino there is no such thing as the best drummer or any other musicians. If someone was the best would they win a prize. Being a musician is not about being better than someone else. Its about the love of music. Its like a brotherhood. No matter how good you are you can always learn more. you never arrive. I have heard famous touring drummers say that the first thing they do when they get to a new town is find somewhere to take a drum lesson. Thats humility.
One of the most down to earth drummers, I have this DVD, as well as many more of Ian. On of my favorite is DP playing Mike The Mechanic! Of all the early classic rock drummers, Ian had the tightest and most memorable licks and groove. Sure NP may have been more Technical, and JB may have gotten more publicity, but Ian has always been a steady groover, and it will alway be no more and no less than about sittin in the pocket, smiling!!!

I love this guy. When I watch guys like Peart or Minnemann, I think, "What the HELL did he just do?" But Paice puts things together so nicely. It's not all that difficult, what he's playing. I get it. He just puts it together in an intricate way.
heavy metal? he never played heavy metal. dont get me wrong a7x got me into metal but they arent t... hard rock at best. pop vocals and the rev wasnt old enough and didnt get the chance to become the great drummer he coulve become and i woulndt say he wouldve become a legend. still fun to listen to sometimes
