  • Decided to go and experiment with me as a black girl getting my hair done in Korea. I wanted to see if Koreans can do or handle a black girl 4c natural hair, and trust me the results were shocking.

I like how everyone in the comments are like omg they did a bad job, I could’ve done it myself, you could’ve done this at home, it takes this amount of people on one head, etc. The reason why is bc 1. Us black people have different hair texture 2. Korean hair salons aren’t experienced or educated with black women’s hair 3. You can’t criticize someone because they don’t know how to do black women’s hair. In America we’re exposed to a lot of things but maybe in Korea there not exposed frequently enough about Black Culture and our hair and on how to do it. Like think about it this way, say your Korean and you work at a hair salon right? So you’ve never dealt with different types of hair unless it’s like yours or similar. Black women’s hair is totally different, you’ve haven’t been taught or educated on how to do women’s hair of that texture. Like that’s like saying if someone to asked you how to build a ship and there is no blueprint how are you supposed to build the ship? Same goes for this situation if a hair stylist doesn’t know how to do that person’s hair how are going to expect them to know? Just think about it.

If that's the case then why are there some Korean salons that do African American women's hair perfectly. If someone calls themselves a true stylist they should learn and be able to do all hair types

Exactly...they did just fine! Frankly, not sure I’m a fan of this trend! Because, I don’t know if people are doing it for the purpose of criticizing or educating. But, don’t come down on someone, if they aren’t familiar with working on that kind of hair...neither are a lot of salons in the US...hence why black people have their own salons...just like women usually go to a salon and men go to barbers. All in all, they didn’t do so bad, but I do wish it was styled a little more.

You’re brave to go to a salon that hasn’t been recommended. Since they didn’t have a detangling brush they did the best they could with what they have and their limited levels experience. The brush they used did a fine job of detangling. The male stylist just was a bit full of himself and as most men in my experience, overly confident.
It was the women stylists’ whose technique was better. Your “trying to help them by detangling your hair yourself” doesn’t help the process nor the stylist. It’s actually a strong signal of your displeasure and doesn’t bode well. Your husband was right to tell you to let them do their job.
You can’t go in expecting a “silk press” on 4a texture by inexperienced Asian stylists. The man used several tools to detangling and blow out. From a comb, a round brush, a detangler, and another brush. His female assistant was consistent with the round brush. And her technique was on point.
However, with training and more education to become culturally competent by discovering and learning new ethnic hair textures they could increase their profit margins as well as their expertise by diversifying their ethnic services.
The round brush is used to provide body and volume for a bouncy blow out. That is why the finished look is fuller. When the male stylist used the paddle brush it straightened a bit more but his technique was insecure. The two females if left alone would have done a much better job. I saw that they were using the flat iron effectively with a couple of passes. A good heat protectant would allow for at least up to 4 passes of the iron gliding slowly not quick for a flatter sleeker and shinier look. 🧚🏽‍♀️
Also, a heat protectant on the hair, and a dry oil to seal moisture would have given shine. ✨And it would allow the flat iron to glide better. I didn’t see any leave-in conditioner. You do have to speak up. At the end of the day hair is hair and all is the same composition. Just genetically different textures from straight, wavy, and curl/coil patterns.
They also didn’t have any curling irons that would have provided a shine and a lasting set especially to finish off the ends.
I’m glad that you’re happy with it, but for the amount of time spent I feel it was basically a learning opportunity for them.
I hope they didn’t charge full price! 😉 But at least the hair is clean, a bit swingy, and it’s a fun way to make a change once in a while to play with a straighter look going from Afro natural hair.
If your want a sleeker look with versatility in twist outs, a quick hit of a 10 -15 minute texturizer done professionally would loosen the texture. It’s still a chemical and many “natural purists” will stay away. You’d have to be dedicated to bi-weekly deep conditioners and delicate care and trims. Otherwise Rock on with what God gave you!
Two hours is about right for this stylist whose only doing Afro textured hair for the 2nd time in his experience. With more experience 1.5 hours is about right. It’s a lot of work. I expected your hair to come out in some version of this look:
th-cam.com/video/NnHqKNbYzGI/w-d-xo.html. The girl’s hair is a fine 4a with less volume than yours. She is not really a full 3c and has combination hair.
I grew up in my Mom’s salon where we did EVERBODY! From bone straight Asian hair, to Caucasian to Latina and African American hair of all textures. We were truly diversified international unisex before the phrase was popular. We are from West Africa and I’m 3c.
This was just my humble opinion on your video. There are Asians who can do our textured hair. My best hair results have been done by my Asian hairstylist in America. My Dominican and black stylists have sometimes damaged my hair that I got a big chop and grew my natural hair out and did it my self.
Giving myself monthly trims and deep conditioning treatments, and stopped using flat irons and heating products too often. Mom retired and I went away to college but learned how to do my own and friends hair. My girlfriend has thick 4a natural hair and she wanted a straight style for a change. When my mom saw the results she was impressed with my technique. She thought I’d put in a relaxer lol! Same length as yours.
Thank you so much for this video experience. You’re a cute couple. I’ve been watching a few of these videos where black women go in to Asian salons almost goading the inexperienced stylists to do Afro-textured hair perfectly the first time!
That’s the only concern I have with such videos otherwise it brings me memories of my growing up with my sisters in Mom’s very diverse and popular salon! 🙏🏽🌷🧚🏽‍♀️✨🦋❤️

Also, I think the amount of new products for natural hair is amazing. If my mother had had Mielle Organics, she wouldn't have needed to relax my hair at the age of 12. They didn't have, for sure, the right products to detangle your hair. If they did, it would not have taken 3 combs and three people to detangle. It's sad they had to resort to heat to tame the hair. No, no, no! Education is everything. I learned how to do my own hair on TH-cam during COVID. I am now natural. Thank you, COVID. The only good thing the pandemic did! And no more heat for me! BTW, you have a gem of a husband for going through this with you!

Instead, you sit there and watch them cause all that heat damage by making several passes with a flat iron hoping it'll become straighter when it won't cause you didn't prep it properly, to begin with. A lot of those flat irons that they use don't get hot enough to effectively straighten hair so if possible bring your own or ensure they have one that can reach at least 390 degrees. In doing this hopefully, you can not only educate them on Afro-hair but more importantly you can keep the next black girl who goes there to get their hair done from going through what you did

Did they use heat protectant. Also it is good to guide inexperienced hairstylist on what to do to minimise damage when dealing with black hair - and ensuring hair is wet to make detangling easier and reduce damage.

Ask black girls around military bases where they get their hair done.
this hairdresser tried but ... wayyyyyy to much heat. Sometimes its good to bring your own products too. Some say the shampoo and conditioners in Korea and China are too harsh. This is not bad though for his second time. Wow ... imagine if a qualified hairf=dresser from USA went there to do black girls hair ...
