      So the one thing I like about the Zoom is that it can be a stand alone device that doesn’t require a computer, however it can be connected to a computer to become an audio interface where you can record through the device (using the mics you listed), but you have so much more control over your audio then using the built in computer audio.
      So, the question to clarify would be how much are you moving around? How often?

    Interesting idea and certainly a good suggestion. However, for the most part, I would probably give the "better" mic to the guest and use the in-built mic myself since they are the more important part of the show and it limits the things that could go wrong with the recorder being fidged with. Good video and great insights.

      Yeah I love it, and still use every single day. In FCPX you can automatically sync audio and video...depending on how you’re setting it up and how complicated your production is.
      I’m literally working on a video right now where I’m using an audio interface connected to a computer to record that separate track and sync it up in post. It’s been a monster of a project that I’m trying to get done even though the workflow is simple.

      @KevinRossRN  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad to help. I did a video on dynamic vs condenser and for your use case I'd lean toward the dynamic to help with that off-axis rejection. My opinion of course, but I've used my dynamic microphones in ll of those scenarios you've listed (and more), and I have to say that they've provided great sound and have greatly helped in post production when trying to clean up that audio, which I also discussed in another video.

    • @leif5046
      @leif5046 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Ross Thanks for the response and advice! Greatly appreciated. I’m also considering whether getting a shotgun mic and/or a reporter mic (like the Røde Reporter) might be more appropriate for interviews of this kind. However, I suppose that could also lead to a lot of bleeding and clean-up work in post, based in info from some of your other videos.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, so I just released a video yesterday about using shotgun mics. They're great. Very versatile. I'd choose this option if it were the only mic I had, which would be for podcasting, video, overhead audio for interviews, etc. but there would be bleed, especially inside. If getting the Rode reporter mic would you be thinking about a setup where it's just one mic?

    • @leif5046
      @leif5046 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Ross Awesome! I’ll check out your latest video. Yes, I’m toying with the idea of just placing a single mic, either a Røde Reporter or some kind of omnidirectional (?) shotgun mic (not sure which brand/model) in the middle to capture both myself and the interviewee, if that works. I could also use the included Zoom H6 mic attachments to capture some ambient or as a backup if that makes sense. I’ve also thought about getting two livelier mics instead, but that seems to be a bit outside of my budget at present. I’m essentially trying to find the optimal setup for a one-on-one sit-down interview without destroying my wallet.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here's the thing...If you already have the Zoom, and your budget is limited right now, then I'd say try to use those built-in mics. One thing you could do is get a dynamic microphone for the guest, and you use the X/Y on the Zoom. The reason I say this is that you could play around with the settings at home to dial in a gain/pick up that'll sound nice and won't be a nightmare in post. If the X/Y is close enough to the person, it'll sound pretty decent. The guest may end up not sitting close enough or moving around a lot with the X/Y whereas if they just have a "regular" microphone in front of them then they may be more inclined to speak into the mic...not sure if that makes sense, but just a thought.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's awesome!
      Lav mics are definitely a start. I always advocate to work within your budget. The preamps in a phone and a camera are going to be a little different than in the Zoom, but yes, you could record into them.
      I would suggest a phone if possible, with lavs or something equivalent and set that up on a table or somewhere in front of you so that you can monitor levels.
      Ideally each host and/or guest would have their own audio recording source.
      What kind of show are you thinking about?

      @giobunnytech 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KevinRossRN Well it would be for my esthetician channel. I went from musician to esthetician. That's my hook for people. Especially being a male in a women lead industry.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on your budget, the ATR paired with a handheld recorder would be ideal to capture that audio for the podcast itself, and then take that audio track and sync it up in your video editor. This is how I did it in this video.
      However if budget is an issue, then you could use the ATR plugged into your computer to record directly into a software program, like Garageband as an example, or Audacity. Then you could still use that audio track for both the podcast and the video component. Same concept, just strictly software based instead of having the handheld.
      You could also use lavs directly into the camera. Depending on the lav (audio quality) you could get some pretty good audio.
      You could also use something like a small shotgun mic like this one: amzn.to/2l9nPts for an overhead audio capture. I did a video on this here: th-cam.com/video/8OwvQxT4OTE/w-d-xo.html and I still use this setup.

    • @KevinRossRN

      I know I keep using Beats in these videos, but I do have studio headphones. The ATMX50 has a 2.5mm jack that goes into the headphone itself (unless they've updated that), and the jack going into the source is 3.5mm.
