Laith, the reason the populations you're looking at are much lower is that the dates you mention were after the Black Death, and the start date is before.
💯
Oh damn, I hadn't even thought about the fact that we'll be going into the Black Death pretty much straight away
I love that the "low views in no time - bro fell off" joke is as funny the millionth time as it was the first time. That is, not funny at all.
Correctamundo
bro fell off
Opinion fell off.
126 likes in 3h, bro fell off
133 likes in 4 hours bro fell off
I like how in the devlog they're like "due to controversy we've split the british isles into the regions of britan and ireland". And then Laith comes along with "THE BRITISH ISLES!"
The Irish will just have to console themselves with the knowledge that the rest of the world actually likes them.
The correct name imo
It is the correct geographical name, get over it.
@@henryglennon3864 Lol savage.
why are the irish so fragile?
For verisimilitude, if you zoom in on the map of England in EU5, you can see Paradox added animated raw sewage flowing through the rivers and off the beaches. There's also a huge medieval Weatherspoons just outside of Reading.
EU5 with pollution mechanics
Great point on the jargon at the end. "Allows peasants to migrate - False" is a lot less obvious in meaning than "Does not allow peasants to migrate."
the first time I played eu4 I encountered a triple negative somewhere in the UI and just sat there staring at it in disbelief
I don’t perceive the ambiguity here. It’s not much different from a “this statement is true/false” condition.
How???????????
Really love your take at the end to make Paradox Games easier to understand, because that's been the only reason so many of my friends did not feel comfortable playing EU4 for a very long time. I'm different because I'm cartophile. And yes that is appearantly a real word.
Thanks for this word. Now I know what I am too.
@@SereglothIV One of us! One of us! One of us!
And here I thought it was just my autism lol
15:55 Aren't both of those figures from after the Black Death hit England? Granted, it only came in halfway through 1348, but I wonder how that affects the figure.
Something like 50% of the population died in countries like England and France so it actually seems about right.
The 5.3 million figure also includes lands outside of England proper, like Gascony and Calais
And is a pre black death number.
para bellum ad goes hard
I also saw it at Red Hawk's yesterday but I still don't know what that is. A mod? A tournament? An event? Or what?
I think it’s fair that at least some of the north west coast falls into the Dublin market. The rugged terrain of the Lake District makes it very difficult to transport goods via land so goods were transported by sea. , so it wouldn’t surprise me if they traded a lot with Ireland.
Interestingly during the interwar period the Cumbrian coast suffered greatly when Ireland declared independence and imposed tariffs on British goods.
The ONLY thing i want from the new maps is that the political map won't vanish if you zoom in.
Just keep it like EU4 that when i zoom in i still see the political map colours on the map and not the terrain.
Mods will fix it?
I like both so an option to toggle would be best.
@@Oxley016 Imperator has a mode for full on political map and also one that's transparent political and becomes terrain when you zoom in. I honestly like the terrain mode when zooming in but I'm more glad that it has both
@@harku123 Indeed, me too!
The london market has a very strange and concerning lack of sea tiles. I'm not a historian, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't sound quite right.
I think the reason was they wanted to create a somewhat independent dutch market that wouldn't get completely absorbed by the english one within a few years
English weren't particularly known for being great seafarers and traders quite at this point, that starts to occur much more over the couple centuries following game start.
@@Oxley016yeah but that just means it’s poorly represented later. If there are dynamic market changes or something this works fine but England seems underrepresented
@@oldylad I am quite sure it is a somewhat dynamic system.
The 5.36 mil population probably includes the continental holdings as well, like Normandie and Aquitaine?
It’s also before the Black Death.
England doesn't have Normandy in 1337. King John lost it in 1204 and Henry V got it back in 1419.
Well 30-50% of england died to the black death.
The population went from 6 ish million to 3-4 million, which would line up with the 5.4 million shown and figures laith says.
On the "plainer English" comment at the end: I would most prefer it if there was a toggle, between "code language" and "lay language". Often when it comes to modifiers and abilities like this, they can be slightly ambiguous when read in lay language, and someone with expertise (me, I'm someone) in how pdx talks, can get more clarity from the more code-y language than from the lay language.
I'm autistic so I much prefer codey language.
@@MrShadowThief”I’m autistic so I like apples”
plot twist, March of The Eagles 2
I think the population of England could also include some of the French holdings, I could be wrong but it would maybe make it much closer to 5m
Yes, that, but also it is pre black death numbers. England and France lost roughly 50% of their populations to the plague.
Still release that other video Laith! Id be interested in seeing that
@4:53
Without going into whether the Northwest of England is represented correctly; trade over sea is far far cheaper than over land. It could just be that people in England in the Dublin trade area find it more convenient for their goods to head towards Dublin rather than London?
I like how Isle of Man is under London Market Control while surrounded by Dublin
Pretty sure they said they want have the ability to change terrains and stuff in game but would depend on their engine team improving the engine tech
Great point on the confusing nature of binary tooltips and especially AND/OR conditions. Even streamers are confused about the conditions for clicking some of these buttons!
That population is before black death
The whole changing terrain is something unconfirmed I believe. I recall reading Johan saying that he was waiting on some of the backend stuff to change to see what could be done but it wasnt off the table :D.
Personally I feel like the marcher lords could do with being more deeply represented than what it seems atm because the way they ruled and their relationship with the english crown was quite different from the rest of Wales so yk..
Do we think there will be anything to do with the Hook and Cod Wars near the start of the game? Lots of maneuvering over control of the low countries?
Considering that the Exchequer was established so long before the EU5 start date, would it not make sense for England to therefore have a (possibly significant) bonus to income from taxes? 10:40
That might be one of the ways that allows the English to be competitive with France during the 100 years war
shouldn’t the fens in the east be much larger?? i don’t think they were drained by this points, most of Suffolk should be sparse and most of the coast that is labelled sparse in Norfolk and Suffolk should be farmlands.
yeah the drainage efforts in the Fens really only took off in the mid 17th century
I'd be interested to hear your opinions on the dev diarys every week, also as you may know the dev team is very open to feedback and will most certainly see this video (and its comments).
I could see "ALLOWS peasants to migrate" (with "allows" in green/blue) and when toggled says "DOESN'T ALLOW peasants to migrate" (with "doesn't allow" in red). Now it is written more like it is programmed with: concept yes/no. Instead of real sentences.
I will also point out that this sort of thing is harder to translate. The sentence structure may need additional changes to inflect into a negative.
First time that my hometown has been included as a location in a PDX game! Couldn't stop myself from going to the forums and giving some feedback 🤣🤣
Would really enjoy one of those succession games with you an red hawk where you take turns playing the same game of EU4. Whether it's the same nation or different ones.
4:38 They don't assugn locations to hubs, only place the hubs, location go to the hub because of the simulation.
Maybe the population number for England looks off because it includes the continental territories like Gascony which aren't shown on the map?
A cool idea could be that when you start a game it does a Dice roll to decide on stuff like if the Isle of man should be under English or Scottish control or if Durham should go go England or Wales, adds a bit more uncertainty to the game and allows the best of both worlds when deciding on stuff that the devs aren't 100% about
Hey, you should have released the video about the start date of eu5 anyway. Would have been interesting to watch and I feel like a small editors note in the beginning would have been enough to clarify the confusion.
OMG FINALLY PLEASE MAKE MORE OF THESE I DONT WANT TO WATCH LUDI OR ANYONE ELSE COMMENTATE ON THESE
16:08 The answer to your bewilderment is that your sources references England in 1350 while the game starts in 1337. The main factor you are forgetting is the big thing that happened in the 13 years between 1337-1350 that drastically changed England's population, known in the history book as the Black Death.
Carmarthen being included makes me so happy even if it should probably be called Carmarthenshire
I think Wales is a but off in terms of terrain I know thst pre heavy industry it was more wooded than it is now but even so the mountains and valleys are the defining feature
with regards to population, the question remains in the minds of the developers should we balance the game to make it more fun or remain fully historical, I think the increased population is just so that systems in place function properly to give balance to the game while still giving weight to the fact that population differences do matter.
Though I'm no game dev but thats what came to mind the moment the population differed from historical records
Could also be a work in progress thing. Plus while laith here says it's unreasonable for London alone to have higher population than Irish regions that doesn't reflect the current situation in present day. London has the similar amount of population as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland combined. So to me it make a whole lot of sense for the high population in London.
I like the different mapmodes EU5 will bring like, Population for example. That will be interesting how they will further implement this. If you want, please cover the other regions of Europe like the Netherlands and Germany when they release (totally not biased by the way).
Edit: England had feudalism, so why are peasants allowed to migrate? Didnt landlords force them to stay on their land? If not please elaborate.
Also, you seriously hired a real historian and then they said "Lol nope". Trolladox at its finest. I have a feeling they have beef with you. 🤭
England was already on it's way to limiting feudalism quite significantly at this time having created the Magna Carta that granted more basic rights to serfs than was normal across Europe over 100 years before EU5 game start. By the time EU4 game start comes around it was pretty close to abolishing feudalism 'thanks' to the effects of the Black Death killing roughly 50% of the population meaning land owners needed more flexibility with the peasant workers being allowed to come and go between estates when needed.
You should still release the video, there's no reason not to lol. Praise to the amount of knowledge you have on political and socioeconomic systems and the practicality that builds them, Cheers
Wales being on the map *as it is* is incredibly dubious. Even if you want to use the word "dominion" (dubious, it was administered from London under English law, the King did not take the title "king of Wales", the title "king of England" included the welsh lands), the lands actually held by the Principality of Wales do not correspond with what is shown on the map. The Marcher Lords were defacto independent and the Principality basically just ran the Gwynedd area in northern wales.
The Marcher Lords are there - just as strong nobility. In the Tinto Maps they talked about if the Marcher Lords should be put under England to be their problem or not.
I agree that the Marcher Lords should probably be independent/under England as a subject.
Go tell them then. They have taken advice before.
You're confusing the principality with the pre Rhuddlan kingdoms. This is all post statute of Rhuddlan and accurately reflects the 4 lordships for the most part. Even Chester was lumped in with Fflintshire.
Yes Wales existed within the Kingdom of England but with a separate legal system, language and culture - English common law was introduced but much Welsh law was maintained until 1536 until dissolved by a "Welsh" monarch.
Given Glyndwr created an (albeit brief in historical terms) internationally recognised independent Welsh state not long after this, I think structuring it like this in the game so you can have similar events play out is fine.
@@someoneinoffensive I'm sorry, Wales being on the map is egregious and an embassament to the games purported desire for histoical accuracy. In EUV I am going to click on Wales and "play" as that "country". This makes no sense. The administration of Wales was conducted by three independently appointed and seperate English bureaucrats. The Justicar of North Wales, the Justicar of South Wales and the Warden of the Marches. The overall administration of Wales was conducted by a council of English bureaucrats based in London. So who am I playing as? The Warden's had no power over each other's lands, or the Marcher Lords, so at best I would rule a few small counties as a Justicar of the north or south. So am I playing as the "Prince of Wales" (who will stop being the prince as soon as his father dies) in London and my cabinet will be the council in London? This situation is just laughable.
@@casio6651 Wales is still within the Kingdom of England. This just accurately shows that bureaucratically they weren't administered from London but Caernarfon.
Your idea of country is a bit 19th century and Wales doesn't meet your criteria for that for another 200 years.
It's not egregious, and one of the reasons the several acts of union took hundreds of years to implement is the fact the Welsh nobility were largely left intact and brought into the system. You'll be able to play as one of these nobles, you won't be able to play as Llewellyn the last or 'the principality'.
laith, as someone who also did their degree in penryn / falmouth, i need to know if you ever went to mangos
It’s very impressive how eu4 TH-camrs are able to drag out tinto talks of maps that take me like 2 minutes to read into 20 or 30 minute videos
I’m so glad to be part of a community that loses its collective mind when new maps get released
Are they going to add the military system from Viki3 into this game?
No
I just notice it just now but did laith changed his pfp?
It looks exciting but I've had this feeling before so let's see
Love the Para Bellum spot.
my home town, being a location in eu5. makes me happy. it should be a location mind you. very important historically speaking.
I have a strange feeling that they’re gonna mess up pop numbers or just put wrong ones for balance purposes. I’m mentally preparing for like 2 mil pops entire Maghreb region 😢
Yeah, Paradox does need a win.
im rlly near the pennines now i just gotta reach out to paradox
Wake up babe new Laith video just dropped
I love the detail they gave to Ireland, since the political reality was a hodgepodge of Anglo-Norman estates and tribal realms
Looks like a good game for now
You're on thin ice with that thumbnail boy.
You should play Judea in imperator Rome it’s a really fun nation
instead of having it say yes/no why not but it "we ARE able to do x" or "we ARE NOT able to do x"
Para Bellum jumpscare xD
2:28 I thought they already confirmed that?
British and Irish Isles...nice.
English population might be including French territories? Still seems a bit high
It's pre Black Death
Release the research cut!
I am afraid although EU5 will have very wide features and countries, they will have no depth at all.
I thought he was going to reveal the Tunisia map
The English population is probably counting the English holdings in France.
you should look at what lord labert say about the same stuff in his video.
o love thatt there's a place just called e-sex in england and everyone's like 'yeah sure'
Because in England lots of people understand the history of the name. It comes from a modern English shortened form of the Anglo-Saxon English name 'Ēast Seax' which is itself short for 'Ēastseaxna rīce' which means 'Kingdom of the East Saxons'.
He said that Hen Ogledd will be a formable from Welsh culture, which may be informing the consideration to include Chester (and beyond) as part of the Welsh lands. I'm looking forward to giving that a playthrough in particular, but I don't know how real that Welsh link would have felt for those over the border at the time.
Day 1, u should play AOH2
If england does not get an event about the devil warwick eu5 would not be worth it
The high population is due to it being before the black death
Disagree with the last point but I do program a bit.
England would have lost a lot of its population in the Black Death, though
Could you imagine if London just gaslighted a bunch of lords into believing that they had special ancient rights, to the point where everyone believes them that they do but can never explain where they came from? Pretty based, not going to lie.
Maybe the extra population of england is due to their french possessions
I fear EU5 will be like KK3, no one would care enough to jump in, and will die out over time.
FUck im so jealous. CK3 dropped the ball pretty hard. Idk seeing all this makes me think EU5 will be a better medieval strategy game than CK3 is becomming...
I LIke THE PART WHEN LAITH SAID WE WOULD GET OVER THE WHOEL SPEAKING FRENCH BIT......OPPS CAPS... we really still have not gotten over it ... le offended.
"you can kind of take these areas of england" That's scotland, those are the Scottish borders, it is not england and never has been.
What are locations in the EU5 context? They appear to be like baronies in CK3.
They're the smallest division of land in PC. I think you can take individual locations, you can't do that for baronies.
have you considered a haircut?
where are you from.

i dont know about great these days
Making it anglo irish culture is so bad its hiberno norman
Scots culture is far more close to highland culture than it is to english culture regardless of language, Scots speak a germanic language similar to english but the difference is not even close to "minute," I think you are less informed than you think you are. Scots and English, especially at that time were not mutually intelligible. Scots speakers had much more contact with gaels than they did with the English and had a shared culture to an extent, we still do. We do not share a culture with England.

People on the forums have made several points about the locations, materials, and culture being inaccurate, which I would recommend people read. Also some good suggestions about making the Marcher Lords English vassals rather than part of Wales. I'm hoping England gets a bit of a rework like Iberia did.
I don’t like how Eu5 is stepping more into medieval times, I want early modern to age of revolution damnit
Let's hope that end date of EU5 would be the same (in 1821) or even later (in 1836, a vicky start date).

I believe the English Language is about 80% borrowed words. Meaning only about 20% is Germanic English, while around 30% of our language is French. It's not really "Posher" words, just the vast majority of the language is not 'English' is the old sense. Nearly everything I've written here is not English aside from the articles.
The only words that were not native english words in your paragraph were: language, percent, Germanic, around, vast, majority, and sense.
The vast majority of words that are used by English people are native anglo words. Sure, there are a lot of words in a dictionary that are latin origin, and 90+% of a biologist's vocabulary are greek/latin constructed terms that didn't exist 100 years ago but 99% of the words the common people use a lot are of English origin.
