When Polly was talking to Rae she mentioned that "he called, and he's desperate to see you" it was pretty clear that Rae has someone other than Bill on her hooks. I don't think we ever find out who "he" is.
It wasn't the signature. Pat was in trouble with Roger for leaving early before Roger noticed the signature discrepancy. The signature was a whole other problem.

Rae (Louise) is such a wonderful actress, her scene with Bill was so real, I just love her. Mary Ryan and her gasping Katherine Hepburn laughter makes me nauseous.
