  • The first activation is shown at 4:35
    Here we have the Sisely Ave level crossing at Wangaratta. It is located in northeast Victoria on the line from Melbourne to Sydney and is 233.087km from Melbourne.
    Flashing lights were first provided at this crossing on October 30, 1958, although gates were not installed until November 28, 1984 (thanks to TrickyMario7654 for finding the information).
    Nearly all of the equipment at this crossing was made by Westinghouse, including the lights, type EB gate mechanisms and hybrid bells. Both bells rung from start up until the gates rose. The pedestrian crossing on the northern side also had Westinghouse pedestrian boom gates which are becoming increasingly rare these days.
    As of mid 2019 the hybrid bell on the eastern gated signal was replaced with a Safetran Type 3 electronic bell, then in late 2019 the Westinghouse EB gate mechanism on the eastern signal was replaced with a Western Cullen Hayes mechanism. The pedestrian crossing on the northern side was also upgraded with swing gates, with the old pedestrian boom gates being ripped out and replaced.
    Train Info:
    1st train: ST23 XPT service from Sydney to Melbourne. This scene was edited because the crossing was activated for a long time while the train stopped at Wangaratta station. Filmed on March 3. 2017.
    2nd train: 8625 V/Line passenger service from Melbourne to Albury. Filmed on March 3, 2017.
    3rd train: 8610 V/Line passenger service from Albury to Melbourne, hauled by locomotive N471. This scene was also edited due to the train stopping at Wangaratta station while the crossing was activated. Filmed on March 4, 2017.
    4th train: 1WM2 steel from Port Kembla to Melbourne via Sydney, with locomotives NR76, NR81, 8128, 8117 and NR106. Filmed on March 6, 2017.

    If you make it down there, I'd also recommend the Bank St crossing in Avenel, VIC which I believe has THREE Westinghouse hybrid bells!! (Interestingly, that crossing didn't have gates up until the mid-2000s, I can remember going through there in 2004, and it's a lights-only crossing at the time)

    A further update: As of Friday 1st July 2022, the remaining Hybrid was removed. They also replaced the crossbucks with red background ones and I’m pretty sure the EB mech.
    The Hybrid was replaced with a Safetran Type 3 or a Siemens E Bell. It is a shame because that was my favourite level crossing growing up (and it was fun to listen to the bells and watch the trains whilst swimming at the Olympic Pool that was demolished last year).

      Thanks for the update, I actually filmed the hybrid just a week before it got removed, I never knew. Now you mention it yes I just realised the pool is gone, thought there was more open space than before lol.

    Nice video! Spiders must love those Westinghouse hybrids. I've done filming up that way, and the trains are always ALWAYS late, like 20 mins. So really I can't believe how patient you were with capturing the crossing activation on cue 4 times. Good work sir

      Thankyou! All of the trains were certainly late, I think the best time was 15 mins late. I can imagine how frustrated some of the passengers must feel. Spiders and wasps love mechanical bells, if I were a signal maintainer I would carry around a large tin of extra-strong insect spray lol.

    4:36 first time I've seen a closeup of those pedestrian gates!
    2:34 those Westinghouse bells look nice!
    2:40 those gate weights look odd!
    4:45 two cars passed the red crossing lights!
    6:55 it took the train two whole minutes to finally pass over the crossing!
    7:47 nice night shot!
    8:30 I like that leslie horn!
    11:49 I like that horn too!
    14:18 it took 5 engines to pull 44 cars?!

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those pedestrian gates are becoming rare, most of them have been replaced by the newer swing gates. The Westinghouse bells are slowly disappearing too! Many cars won't stop at crossings until the gates begin to lower.
      For southbound trains at Wangaratta the approach track circuit for the crossing begins before the station platform, so passenger trains stopping at the station will activate the crossing for several minutes. I like the leslie horns, they are nice & loud! Not all 5 engines would be powering, 1 or 2 of them would just be there for transfers elsewhere.

    A very Melbourne-esque crossing in regional Victoria with the Westinghouse bells and the yellow pedestrian crossing arms. Up until February 2011, this crossing had wishbone gates and incandescent lights (My dad and i actually drove past the crossing the weekend it got upgraded)
    It's unusual to see clear, fading LED's too!

    • @JamesJimmaHarding
      @JamesJimmaHarding 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, i take that back, the gates were replaced a bit before that (after checking up street view imagery from February 2010, which was the only time the photos were taken of the crossing), it was just the lights that were upgraded in 2011

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it does look like a typical Melbourne crossing, but apart from upgrading the lights to LED and replacing the old wishbone gates they have left the crossing intact. You can tell that metro aren't in charge of this crossing, thankfully!

      Thankyou! I wasn't able to find any incandescent crossing lights, it seems like the whole line has been upgraded to LED's. Those gate lights are unmarked, I was wondering who made them.

    It wouldn't surprise me now that the eastern signal has a Safetran Type 3 and a WCH mech that they will 'upgrade' this crossing sooner rather than later.
    I mean 'upgrade' by removing the remaining Westinghouse Hybrid bell and EB gate mech as well as changing the crossbucks to red background ones. It would be a shame if they did, but sadly not uncommon for the ARTC.
    On another note, I know of two upgraded crossings (within the past 5 years) on the outskirts of Wangaratta that have General Signals Type 2 or 3's instead of Safetran Type 3's. They are Taminick Gap Road, South Wangaratta and Boorhaman Road, North Wangaratta.
    I know about Taminick Gap Road because on the evening Albury to Southern Cross train I was on it when it went through that crossing.
    I wouldn't have known about Boorhaman Road if I didn't go out to a pub nearby so that's how I unintentionally found out about that one.

    • @sarahsherwill8598
      @sarahsherwill8598 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Down Street in Longwood also has General Signals Type 2’s &/or 3’s.

  • @robbiewales3007
    @robbiewales3007 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    ARTC were planning to do an upgrade of the High St crossing in Seymour. I couldn't understand why. They've already been upgraded to have super bright LEDs.
    I could be wrong but the North East line appears to be the only victorian mainline with active hybrids.

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The term "upgrade" is quite open-ended when it comes to crossings and can mean many things. It could mean an upgrade of the road surface, extra lights and signage, entire replacement of the signals, or simply replacing the gate mechanisms. I notice on street view that the crossing has no pedestrian gates, so even that could be on the cards.

    • @JamesJimmaHarding

  • @sarahsherwill8598

    Update #2: One of the Westinghouse gate mechanisms died about a month ago so it has been replaced with a WC Hayes gate mechanism. It is on the same side that now has the Safetran Type 3 that I mentioned a couple of months ago (forgot to mention that it’s the side closest to the unprotected pedestrian crossing).

  • @aydoyt
    @aydoyt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    All Westinghouse, excluding the Safetran type 3 and WCH gate on the southern signal.

    • @sarahsherwill8598
      @sarahsherwill8598 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They changed that last year. Don't know what happened to the hybrid, suspect someone stole it. Was working perfectly when it was still there.
      The Westinghouse gate mech gave up and died. So that's why it's now a WCH mech.

  • @TrickyMario7654
    @TrickyMario7654 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're Welcome. Do you have any idea why one of the pedestrian crossings is unprotected?

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure why, the unprotected crossing sees much less pedestrian traffic. It also doesn't have any footpath on either side, so maybe they thought a maze was enough protection. Still seems odd though.

  • @sarahsherwill8598
    @sarahsherwill8598 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This crossing has recently over the past week had one of the hybrids replaced with a safetran type 3 unfortunately. Secondly, this crossing is also in the stage of currently receiving electromagnetic swing gates on the side that currently has the Westinghouse pedestrian boom gates.

    For your information Google Street View has been recently updated on this crossing. Here is the link: goo.gl/maps/ifNB2a3tXNVNJCAy5
    Also Shanley Street has been updated too: goo.gl/maps/zY129JGTHB38zBPL6
    A link to Boorhaman Road too, even though you don’t have a video on it: goo.gl/maps/qwXpKuT2BdfqUbF46
    Edit: Isolation got me bored and planning what crossings to revisit or visit in the future and that’s how I discovered the updates.
    Also the Westinghouse pedestrian gates are still there as well as the electromagnetic swing gates. The electromagnetic swing gates are still yet to be commissioned (and they’ve been sitting there for nearly a year waiting for use). They haven’t even put a path over the tracks for the new gates yet. Talk about procrastinating.

    After watching for a few minutes, I have another idea.
    Since you like to zoom in for close-ups of the equipment, maybe you should tell us, what each piece and part of the equipment does and who makes it. That way, your videos will be more interesting, than just looking at parts of the equipment, on each video you film. More ideas later, as I finish this one. Guess that's all, for now.
