    Thank you so much for making this video, it helped so much! Quick question: for the ACT, would you recommend the Princeton Review book or the official ACT prep book? And if it isn’t asking too much, would you mind explaining why it’s better than the other? I’m getting section specific books, but I’m split between the two for my general book. Thank you!

      I would recommend the official ACT prep book because it has the actual tests in it as well as the same general overview as the Princeton Review.

    thank you so much! this video was very informative and straight to the point! i was wondering what you recommend to prepare for the act essay section. is the college panda book worth the money (if you've checked it out) or is it better to use youtube videos? once again, thank you so much for your hard work :)

    • @TheContemporaryClassroom

      Hi Jess! Thank you for watching, and I'm glad you found the video informative. First off, my recommendation would be to not take the ACT essay section. It's not necessary and you would have to sit in the test even longer for something that doesn't really impact college decisions. I would also only recommend it if you're a strong writer under pressure. I think it's better to use youtube videos and practice the timing part. Once you understand the essay structure, you'll be good. I haven't seen the panda book specific to this section, so I cannot say anything on that. Hope this helps :)

    Hello, thanks for making this video. I already have the college panda SAT math and SAT writing books. Do you know if those could substitute well for the college panda ACT books, or should I buy the ACT books instead?

    • @TheContemporaryClassroom
      @TheContemporaryClassroom  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting. The writing one will be okay for ACT English, but the ACT math questions are different so I would recommend getting the ACT math book if you’re aiming for the best coverage.

    Thank you for this video! I have a question regarding the ACT math prep book. Would you say the college panda book is good for those trying to revise concepts again and trying to practice applying them, or only for those who are looking to increase their scores but already have all the essential concepts down? I like to write things in a book to help me memorize, and I'm wondering if the college panda book would even be helpful for me.

    • @TheContemporaryClassroom
      @TheContemporaryClassroom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you for watching and for asking such a fantastic question! I would say the college panda ACT math book lays out the categories of questions you may be asked and then provides examples where you apply them. If you're trying to increase your score and already have the essential concepts down, I would recommend just doing many practice tests. If you have the essentials down, you will pick up the patterns for yourself. But if you need the question types, the college panda ACT is a great resource. I would suggest printing out the tests if you like to write things down OR keeping a separate notebook as your error log to go over missed questions. Let me know if I need to explain anything further to answer your question!

    Hey, thanks for making this video. I'm unsure whether to take the ACT or SAT. I looked at many videos and I understand that the ACT has harder math but easier english than the SAT. I took a practice test of both and got the exact same score (equivalent). The ACT math was quite hard, but the other 3 sections were super easy. The only problem I had was timing on the ACT. I left about 10-15 questions on the Science and reading, but managed to finish the English. All the questions that I did felt very easy, but maybe thats because I spent more time on them?
    The SAT Math did feel slightly easier, but the reading/writing was definitely harder than the ACT. (I still finished it though).
    I know for sure that in both cases I just need to work on my Math.
    What would you recommend?
    Thanks

    • @TheContemporaryClassroom
      @TheContemporaryClassroom  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are amazing for putting such critical thought into your choice! My recommendation to you would be to try the ACT. If, after practicing for 5 times, you’re not improving in your time on the non-math sections, then you have to do the SAT. You will find that when you practice, ACT question types repeat, so it’s easier to get the hang of things and cut down on time. The same goes for math. Yes, you have to know a bit more, but once you master, let’s say, a permutations question, that same question type repeats over and over. Best of luck, and feel free to reach out if you have any follow-up questions!

      Hi Onyx, great question! The Black book has good test taking tips, but you could also get those from watching creators here on TH-cam or a tutor if you so choose. If you like books, it is decent. But if you’re able to utilize your resources, there’s no need to spend on that book. Hope this helps your decision!

    • @TheContemporaryClassroom
      @TheContemporaryClassroom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Niharika! Great question! To my knowledge, the college board has a 2020 version and a 2016 version of their books. The 2020 version is better because it has better practice tests. The 2016 version has the official practice tests, which were not actually given. Every practice test in the 2020 version was actually given to students. For the other books, more recent editions means the authors usually correct any mistakes or concerns, but if you're on a budget, older versions also do the trick. Let me know if I answered your question and if you need any other assistance! Good luck on your study plan!

      @@TheContemporaryClassroom do you think Barron’s sat book is worth to buy?

    • @TheContemporaryClassroom
      @TheContemporaryClassroom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@niharikagurung7627 In my opinion, no. There are enough practice tests out there that you do not need additional material aside from the official tests. One situation in which Barron's could help is if you are a lower scorer and are working on building some foundational skills, so they provide different passages and math problems to practice. But if you're starting above a 1300, then you don't need it.

      @TheContemporaryClassroom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stephanie, thank for reaching out. This sounds like a frustrating experience for you. 790 means that you are having trouble with foundational skills which can take a while to improve, especially if teachers in your school weren’t the best. You’ll keep scoring around the same if you keep taking practice tests. You’ll have to spend time reading high level texts and understanding the basics of math. And this may be hard to hear, but the SAT is not the only way to show your knowledge, and may not be the test for you. You may want to explore other options. Hope this gives you a bit of insight!

      @@stephanienwonwu9701 sorry for the delayed reply. No book can build foundational reading skills. You need to read articles and books to get more comfortable with English’s nuances. For math, you may have to use a textbook if the pwn book doesn’t work for you. The pwn book is for students who aren’t as strong in math.

    Can SAT and ACT self study? And how much time should I spend to prepare inorder to get high score?

    • @TheContemporaryClassroom
      @TheContemporaryClassroom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phyo, great question! Unfortunately, I don't have a straight answer for you. The short answer is, yes, you absolutely can self study for both tests. However, self studying is also suited to someone who has the time to look up the answers and resources on their own. In addition, the answer to both of your questions depends on where you are starting and your level of confidence. For example, if you are already close and motivated, you can get studying done 1-2 months in advance. Hope this helps! If you're willing to give me some score specifics, I could offer more pointed advice. In addition, I also made a video about studying for the SAT if you're interested with time pointers.

    • @TheContemporaryClassroom
      @TheContemporaryClassroom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! I think I mentioned this in the video but I would only recommend this book if you don’t want to do the question categorization yourself. The ACT science section changed a little, but the question types discussed in this book are still relevant. So the information is not dated, but I wouldn’t call the book “really good” with information you couldn’t get yourself. For example, the book will outline estimation questions, show you what to look for, and tell you how to solve. Then give you problems to practice that skill. However, if you took ~5 Science sections, you could also draw that conclusion yourself. But if you really like having everything in one place and want to invest, then I recommend the book. Hope this was helpful!

      Olivia, thanks for watching and asking such a great question. I actually made a video on this specifically, and I'll link it below. First off, I love that you took both tests, an excellent first step. Did you feel the same level of confidence with both? It's interesting that you say the SAT has "more" math. The SAT only goes up to algebra 2 and the ACT goes to pre-calculus. The content on the SAT is easier but asked in a more story-like way. You have to know more content on the ACT math but the questions are easier to prepare for (they repeat a lot across tests). I hope this helps!

      Hey thank you so much for replying....sorry i don't check notifications in a while, yeah the SAT had 2 sections of math instead of only 1 so I thought it was harder lol. How is the SAT harder to prepare for?

    • @TheContemporaryClassroom
      @TheContemporaryClassroom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Olivia, not a problem at all! If the idea of 2 sections especially one without a calculator is daunting to you, then maybe the ACT should be the path you take. In my opinion, the test that is harder to prepare for depends on how strong your math background is in school. There are some teachers that really get at the underlying concepts. If you really understand how everything works (i.e. you can explain what slope is, you understand what it means when a system of equations has infinite solutions, etc.), the SAT will be a BREEZE. However, I have found that math isn't taught often in that way, and is often more about solving problems, which is what the ACT is. Students who are calculator-dependent also do much better on the ACT. All you have to memorize is what to plug in, rather than how to apply concepts. Hope this helps!
