I liked when an interviewer asked Angus "What's it like to be one of the best rock guitarists in the world? He replied "I'm not even the best guitarists in the band".
I agree Malcolm is the best rhythm guitar player. AC/DC's rhythm section of Malcolm, Cliff, and Phil is the greatest in hard rock music. From everything I have read and learned over the years Malcolm preferred to be in the background and let Angus, Bon, and Brian have the spotlight. AC/DC have aways and will aways be my favorite band of all time.
I think Angus admitted that Malcolm could play all of Angus’s parts but Angus couldn’t play all of Malcolm’s. Granted, Angus was playing his parts while sprinting and spinning on his back. Long story short, they complemented each other as perfect as it could be.
Angus was famously once asked what it felt like to be one of the best guitarists in the world, and he replied "I'm not even the best guitarist in the band". Mal was the MAN!!
A few things to consider, he was a small dude with huge picking strength using heavy gauge strings and extra thick picks and often wearing them down to stubs, just a beast.
I think Malcolm's rhythm work is fantastic, but sometimes I feel like the comments act like Angus never played rhythm! Sure he plays the leads, but in most of the songs, Angus plays a complimentary rhythm part with Malcolm. Let's stop trying to figure out who the best guitar player in the band is and realize AC/DC is great because of the way they played together.
Anyone that knows anything about AC/DC knows that even Angus will admit that Malcolm was the better player. From the earliest days, it was Malcolm that pushed and aided Angus into becoming the guitar player he is today. Malcolm was an understated genius and an influence to millions, including Angus. R.I.P.
I definitely agree with that. Malcolm was the greates Rhythm Gitarist of all time. One of my favourite Riffs of Malcolm Young is definitely the Rhythm Part of the Song "Rocker" from Dirty Deeds done dirt Cheap 1976 ;)
@Bad Boys Boogie i dont care what my favourite guitarist say, and im pretty sure they would not pick him as greatest rhythm guitarist of all time. there are many that are far more better, like James Hetfield and Jimmy Hendrix. Malcom is one of the best, but not even close being best one of so many great Rhythm guitarists.
Great video. Looking forward to trying these out! Malcolm was a beast. As someone who's own mother has been diagnosed with dementia, I can definitely feel for Angus and his loss.
I love how both brothers have been asked basically the same question, and both answered that the other one was the greatest. There was an interview clip i saw where Malcolm, in all humbleness as ususal, was explaining how the world will come to see the master that is his little brother.. Cant remember which interview it was, but he was giving it all to his bro. And Angus, how he shrugs off statements toward him as being best, and gives it up to Malcolm. That in itself says so much.. They had to have to known what level they were really at, remained ever humble, spoke of each other as how true greats ought to speak.. So special to have 2 of them in the same band. "Real recognize real", they knew they were good at what they did
I totally agree. Angus is always my guitar hero. Malcolm was the balls behind the sound. Great rythym guitarist and the best in my view. He dug in to those chords.
Once in an interview Angus Young was asked "What's it like being the best guitar player in the world"? and he responded by saying "I'm not even the best guitar player in AC/DC". So he agrees with you.
In my opinion it is important to keep some aspects in mind , if some guitar player wants to come close to ACDC's music and tone. 1) Never use too much gain. Angus' and Malcolm's secret ingredients are high volume, strong fingers and the perfect match of both guitarist's tonal frequencies. 2) Malcolm used a setup , which is perfect for rhytm guitar playing. If I know it right, he used a 13's set of strings. The string choice gave him the right resistence for his physical right hand playing , and gave his guitar tone the deep growl we all loved to hear from him. He didn't need string bending -- never -- . So he could use low fretwire, which makes rhythm playing easier to keep chords in tune. 3) Angus' and Malcolm's Schaffer Vega unit's are important too. They give a boosted tone, but no high gain sound. I enjoyed your video 🙂
@@paulaeden5934 3 or 4 years ago I read in the german guitar magazine "Grand Guitars" a review about the Gretsch Masterbuilt Malcolm- Young- Tribute guitar. The author wrote something about a 13's set. A 12' gauge is my choice on my personal Strat ;-) I never had the chance to enter the stage before or after an ACDC concert. I think the both guitarists discovered some day in the past that their wireless units work great as tone shaping tools too. A little bit of boost , and a little bit of compression. ( Personally I'm a big fan of Fil , especially with his Schaffer Replica towers.)
@@dasmuss6174 Yeah, we're good thank you. We still have guns so the government couldn't pull the same horrible stuff they pulled on your country. We are all praying for you. God Bless You.
You only need to use your index and middle finger for the D-chord in "Shoot to Thrill", not having the ring-finger locked on a string makes it much easier to stretch the pinkie..
Nice guitar! You do it justice. I'm guessing you were playing on the bridge pickup to copy the beast. Since the beast had no tone control, are you setting yours all the way to the bass end of the tone control?
Not particularly controversial, to be honest. Malcolm was the beating heart and driving force of AC/DC. The reason they were so successful was that while other bands hammered and thrashed, AC/DC had swing and groove, and Malcolm was largely the reason why. This video didn't really give the best examples of Malc's rhythm playing. The main riff from Thunderstruck is good, but the chorus is better. Likewise, Shoot to Thrill. Listen to both of them - Phil Rudd and Cliff Williams play a constant, unchanging pulse while Malc plays single, ringing chords against the beat. So simple, so effective.
I actually agree with this....Malcome was the second best rythm guitarist in history, Keith Richards being the first...Malcome's work on Thunderstruck is just incredible
Malcom and Keith are definetely 2 of the best rhythm guitarists ever, idk if top 2 but definetely top 10. Theres also page, van halen, hendrix, iommi, hetfield, blackmore, dimebag etc
At first it was easy to play AC/DC in high school. At parties. Could sound somewhat like them. Nobody cared. But to actually PLAY like them, Malcom in particular, no way. He added all these little touches. He had to show Angus how to play the song correctly.
I think Malcolm only used the Falcon for the Back in Black record. As I heard he didn't like the sound and stuffed the f holes with socks. Don't think he used it after that.
Story goes he liked the guitar but he played it so hard that he literally killed it. He brought it to a luthier and it never sounded the same. The way he plays….I believe it.
Nice vid, however the Gretsch Jet in 1963 was not a "junior" guitar.. a serious well made hollow body guitar given to him by Harry Vanda who with George Young was the driving force of The Easybeats.. if you look back at early vids of the Easybeats, the can watch George playing piano with that same Gretch strapped to his back..
Definitely did not need to sit down for that statement, he really was the best guitarist in AC/DC. He is probably the best rhythm guitarist of all time too.
I like that your low E wobbles out of tune a bit when you hit it hard - just like Dirty Deeds and Let There Be Rock era on the records. Good lesson, sir.
The wrong ones. Way too much gain and treble. If he backed off the volume on the guitar it would help too. Much less reverb too. This sounds like Duane Eddy with a tube out.
No Malcolm most certainly did not add an extra tube to his amp. Not sure where you got that?? Stock Marshall Superbass head. He also didn't use that much gain. Just a slight crunch and a lot of volume.
Even Angus says Malcolm was a better guitar player than him and the only reason he didn't want to play lead is because it would take up too much of his drinking time 🍻💪🏼 I'd say that's a pretty damn Aussie attitude if ya ask me 👌🇦🇺🔥🔥🔥

Correct
If you want blood you got it is the ultimate rhythm the way he plays it. Drives it straight through the whole song
100%, and surprisingly difficult to fully nail properly like Mal
Actually the Mal rhythm in if you want blood changes for the outro of the song but don't ever see anyone play it that way.
absolutely, there's a reason I'm drawn to that song, so cool to practise
Yep. Malcolm was the John bonam of AC/DC he led the band sometimes switching to lead. He was the driving force
John Bonham ??

Definitely Angus has said multiple times, Malcom was a much better guitar player than he was.
yes becouse malcom was the guy where angus learned all guitar things but angus wanted to be solo guitarist so malcom was rythm
Malcolm was a living metronome, one of the best rythm guitar ever, however I think he's a little bit underrated by people who don't like Ac/Dc 😵

Absolutely. Glad someone said it, it's an overlooked gem.
That's my favourite AC/DC song of all time! I'm glad someone else mentioned it as I was about to.
Great album powerage is from start to finish
Gone Shootin is probably the most fun to play by Malcolm. I could play Mals rhythm part all day and not get tired of it.
Meanstreak as well as the Blow Up Your Video album are terribly underrated
Malcoms tone timing and rythym ...drive that band, and keep it stuck together like glue
Malcom Rocked! Bon Scott too!
ACDC's badland is so underated, Malcoms rhythm is driving in this song,.
Yeah it is man! Flick Of The Switch is in my top 3 Brian Johnson era AC/DC albums.

4 strings..too many thats jazz chord
Mal's first position E has a third in it, as dlearly audible in songs like Jailbreak.
