Sorry for old reply, I think if I remember right, both cats and dogs have a couple or few layers of claws so since owner sometimes don’t trim, they start softening their claws with saliva for awhile then rip the layers with their teeth to trim it themselves. This is so the claw doesn’t overgrow, curve, then will eventually dig into their paws. It can be quite painful so that’s why dogs and cats do this
