    Good vid but just to add something that both coaches and videos don’t emphasize is the recovery to en-garde from lunge. If u find urself using too much of ur front foot to lunge and recover (to the point of groin injury like i did) or too slow to recover, it means that ur not using ur backfoot at all. After ur lunge, bend ur rear knee and pull ur weight towards ur rear/back leg. Although ur pushing off ur front foot first to recover, u should feel ur back leg doing the work to pull ur body back to en-garde. I know it doesnt sound important but it has been such a revelation for me that i feel the need to share it. It has made my recovery so much faster, more balanced, and easier with less strain on my front leg. Because of the natural transfer of weight, i really feel the ‘spring’ and explosiveness in my lunges which has allowed me to stretch much farther than before. Just wanted to share for those who feel their lunge is too slow. Read it from Istvan Lukovich’s book in footwork chapter

    I like your videos, they match my training philosophy very closely and this one has some great points but.... this one raises some questions for me.
    1. Doesnt really demonstrate priority/right of way. Your arm often trails the leg and this leaves the fencer prone to stop hits. The body instinctively moves legs before arms and we have to break that instinct with beginners; I always teach, arm first, legs last. Extend (fully).... and lunge. They can tighten up the coordination/timing later with experience. Even if that is not the focus of this video I would still demonstrate that.
    2. That rear arm... I find that if you hold the rear hand in a forward position, apart from being prone to getting fingers hit (and temptation to cover target), a swing out and back can turn the torso too much and ruin point control. While I don't condone the traditional on guard position (upper arm horizontal), I teach an elbow down, hand behind shoulder stance so that you can still fling the hand back (helping forward motion), keep the shoulder down, increase point accuracy and still turn the body. (Even worse, in my view, is the hanging, 'dead arm' position.) Makes me cringe!
    3. Yes, leaning does reach further but kills the ability to recover back if the attack fails.. Why not reprise?
    4. Accelerating lunges. Lifting the leg higher does achieve a slow start but also advertises what you are doing. I either go for a slight shift of weight onto the back foot before lunging to achieve that delay whilst also looking like a half step back (encouraging opponent to move forward) or just delay the rear leg action enough to do the compound blade actions
    Any thoughts on these?

    Been fencing epee for about two months now, and while I love my club and coach, your attention to detail is incredibly helpful. Now, I'm pretty new, but lunging generally gets me domed. Thanks to this video I'm starting to understand why. Great stuff man, thanks.

    This helped alot! My Coach and I always talk about how my Lunge is faulty since I naturally keep putting my foot first and not my hand and to steady myself but this helped improve my Lunge! Now, I can actually do it without thinking too much!

    I think you sholud extend your hand first. for making safe place infront of you, just think. but really good video.

      That's almost always the case but I've heard olympic fencers don't have to, until somewhere in the middle of their lunge because they can lunge from so far out. They don't reach that distance where you need your sword out in front of you until the lunge is already in motion!

      Right of way makes it MORE relevant actually. The person who extends first in the box has right of way if both fencers lunge. The 10000 mph speed of saber is what makes it less relevent.

    I really love this channel and now I need your help. I started fencing at 9 but had to stop doing till 20. Between these years I did many sports from different fields. Now I am back and I need to improve my physical condition flexen my strengthen my body. Do you think reformer Pilates or crossfit might help maybe another advice?       Im also into kali and looking to translate rapier and fencing techniques into knife fighting. Particularly the in quartata and pasata soto. Are you in the philippines?have you had any successes with the in quartata/girata as known in fabris rapier?

    Dang this was high quality, thanks for breaking that down so well! My problem though, especially saber is getting refs to be on my side. Got any tips for winning over refs? Or getting better about right of way?

      Brianna Harper one thing I would do is talk to them after the match/poule/de has finished. Find out what you are doing wrong or they are not seeing.
      Often I find that I may think I have right of way but then someone watching side on sees it totally different.

      I think you just have to give it your all to recover, and keep your arm extended until you fully recover.

    On the second lunge in sabre, will you get right of way if your hand does not start first or is back at 90 degrees as you show here? My experience has been no, but your mileage may vary.

      No, If you pull your arm back and your opponent extends his arm first you will loose that touch. The only time I would recommend pulling the arm is when your opponent is backing up looking for a parry and not attacking.
