The dots on the reed petal screws mean that those are JIS, or Japanese industrial standard. Not Phillips. They are meant to take a special JIS screwdriver which will fit properly and reduce the chance of rounding them out. If you use a Phillips and round them out (like I have), there's another tool which will remove them easily. That tool is a large pair of needle nose pliers. You can usually grip even small button head screws with them by laying the pliers flat against the plate and gripping around the rim of the screw.

Dude! I think you may have solve both my bikes’ issues. My Rebuilt XC200 won’t start ( I have no idea how many hours Dre on the boysen reeds). Also, my 1996 KDX200 has a really “boggy” low end and a weird idle. Again, I didn’t replace reeds when I re did the top end. THANK YOU!

Another well done and informative video, Thank you Brian. Do you suggest turning the petcock to "off" before removing the fuel line or is that just extra work? I mix the gas and oil at 32:1 like the book says if it makes any difference with the life of the reeds. The little marks along the timeline is a nice touch but I watched it all.

That’s a good question! I had already removed the gas tank before I removed the reeds for this video so the petcock was removed from the bike. But, YES! Close the petcock if it’s not closed. By habit, I always turn my petcock to the OFF position when I stop the motor after riding my bike. So my petcock is in the OFF position any time the motor is not being run.

Oh, as for the 2 stroke oil ratio, that will have little impact on reed life. Reeds don’t rely on lubrication to function but, I mix my oil at 32:1 for other reasons. Its cheap insurance for ensuring engine longevity.

@@brian.d.mobley LOL hhaha Aaa that's good, always welcome to my country, Colombia. I'm from Medellin. Whenever you want, visit this great city. Amigo! I ask you, is it better to leave the stops narrow to the petals or the stop open? I have noticed that it works better narrow. better said the half closed stops.
