      That's what I came to comment on because it is absurd to present this as a "Whatever Happened To...", which implies that they are missing in action so to speak. CLUTCH is currently one of the hugest, most popular "underground" bands in the world and they have never been missing or unaccounted for in any way. I was living in Maryland when CLUTCH began playing out circa 1992 and have been a loyal fan ever since... nearing my 50th time seeing them live. I'll tell ya "Whatever Happened To..."... CLUTCH have been killing it all along and issuing some of the best albums ever recorded.

Mastodon was OPENING for them doing pre-release tour for Leviathan which Neil added vocals to. That was a sick show because it was so small, and because it was right before Mastodon started getting big. I'm pretty sure you can hire them to play your backyard party if you have a bit of cash.

I was lucky enough to live in Landover when they first started gigging around the DC-Metro area. I was 14 then. Those were usually small shows, 30 people some even less. Over the years I've seen them play for 5,000 people one show and the next show has 50. I love that they do that. Really shows they care about their fans. I haven't seen them since they played with Primus out in Vegas a few years ago and the one before that they played with the Wailers and Jimmies Chicken Shack. Clutch has always been one of my favorites. I love that include Go-Go music at their shows. Go-Go is HUGE around D.C., Northern Virginia, and PG County.

      It's always a joy to find bands that have success without being on the mainstream radar. You found them, you'll find some of your people.
      This goes for every genre of music. Just scratch below the charts, and like any gem. The awesome holy fuck valuable ones that would lose value and substance if cut are there.

    I watched this because it was about Clutch. Thanks for a brief band history refresher. They became Rock Wizards - is what happened to Clutch. They pulled Excalibur out of the ‘Rock’. @@amstel5468 yes the first couple albums are classic. As for the rest of their catalog you need to listen because they honestly haven't released a flop yet. Ask anyone that knows of Clutch how great of an album Earth Rocker is. They are one of the few bands I can think of that have released albums frequently and without line-up changes. But seriously check out all their albums, most are great from start to finish. If you don't think so for some reason, I guarantee you'll find a handful of kick ass tunes on each album.

      Saw that show in New Haven, Connecticut and Fudge Tunnel was right before Sepultura. So it was four bands that night.
      Insane evening - Alex Newport’s (FT) guitar kept going out of tune so at the end of their set he smashed it into a million pieces onstage a la Pete Townshend. When Sepultura went on, Max Cavalera’s 4-string guitar was horribly out of tune as well so in the middle of the song, he slammed the guitar down and stage dove. He apologized when he got back onstage and croaked out “sorry about that… in Sepultura, things sometimes get fucked up.” (You have to imagine his voice saying those words in his tone and accent to get the full effect.)
      I talked to the bassist of FT when I saw him in Edinburgh the following summer at the Fringe Festival and brought up that night. He remembered it well and said “it was misbehaving so Alex had to put it out of its misery.” 😅

    @930tomp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As you can see by my icon, I'm a fan, so it's no surprise that this video was suggested to me, or that I'm here commenting. First, the title of this video suggests that Clutch had some sort of career peak, then dropped out of existence. Nothing could be further from the truth. Clutch is a band with a unique career arc. They were never big enough to headline arenas, but they toured in support of arena rock acts, growing a loyal following based on their live shows. By the time they released their self titled album, they were popular enough to headline most clubs in the US. But unlike bands with radio hits, whose careers often peak, then their popularity fades, Clutch toured relentlessly, and their fan base grew and grew. Clutch is more popular now, 30 years into their career, than they've ever been. They tour around the world, selling out venues everywhere, and even headline their own festival, Earth Rocker. So what happened to Clutch, is that their music evolved, as the taste of their fans evolved, leaving very few fans behind. Now they're an incredibly successful independent band. Side note: the keyboard players name was Mick, not Mike, R.I.P.
