To eliminate the lagginess of the text, click cntrl D and then it should be nice and smooth. Cntrl D, deselect all the layers and then it should be nice and smooth. when you have the dash outline on your layer that is what is causing the lag. Hope that works for you.
If you are on iPad or anything and struggling to open the layer style window by double clicking the text layer then just simply click the layer tab on the top of the screen Layer tab ➡️ Layer style ➡️ Layer style window From there you can select whatever you want to do with your text like drop shadow , Gradient overlay etc.

I have a question regarding creating a deboss effect. Normally I would type my text then go into blending options change opacity to 0% then go to inner shadow and move opacity from 0% up to 75%. This works. My issue is when I try to duplicate this with a new text layer the inner shadow opacity is now already preset to 100%. What is the issue here?
