I've lived on O'ahu my entire life (over 50 years) and I love driving around the island on my free days... my wife and I will pack a cooler of drinks and head out to the north shore via Haleiwa, and drive back via Laie... it is almost like going to an outer island... love your videos! mahalo for visiting!

Portuguese sweet bread is VERY popular here in Hawaii and has for a long time been used as a fund raising tool for schools/groups/organizations.
Robert Taira the owner and baker called his Hilo bakery King's Bakery.. He then moved it to Oahu in the early 1960s.. his tweak to make sweet bread last longer without spoiling or getting too hard made him think of a bigger ambition.
So to the dismay of us kocal people, it felt like a sell out, he moved operations in around 1977 to Torrance, CA as he felt that the sweet bread deserved larger recognition and he changed the name to Hawaiian Sweet Bread (because anything with 'HAWAII' is a big draw). I *don't* agree with his name change to Hawaiian Sweet Bread. The people frim the mainland thinks it is a Hawaiian thing, when actually it is a Portuguese bread. As locals, it is split as to whether it was okay to rename it as Hawaiian sweet bread. However, as locals we ALWAYS refer it to as Portuguese Sweet Bread, and if we hear otherwise... we know that person isn't from Hawaii.
