"Back to the olden days": Rogers network outage impacting phones, internet, Interac in Canada

  • Rogers users in Canada woke up to a mass service outage that impacted cellular and internet services, with people left frustrated and employees still working from home scrambling to find WiFi.
    In a statement sent to Global News, a spokesperson for Rogers Communications the outage is affecting both the “wireline and wireless networks.”
    “Our technical teams are working hard to restore services as quickly as possible,” the spokesperson said.
    The outage is also reportedly impacting ATMs and Interac machines across the country, according to reports on social media.
    As a result, coffee shops with working WiFi saw a flood of internet-hungry customers flood their businesses.
    "We're back to the olden days where everything runs on cash and you can't call or contact anyone..." one person said, who was among many using the WiFi at a local Starbucks.

    I wish the media would take this a little more seriously. "Back to the olden days," isn't something you want to think about when one of Canada's largest communications providers STILL cannot say when they will fix this issue.
    Not being able to dial 911 or have businesses across the country be able to accept payment is no joke.

    make sure you remember this when the government wants you to be cashless....this could just be a blip or it could be cyber attacks to come...take it as a warning sign to think through what you may need if this happened on a greater scale.or for a longer time and plan accordingly

      Revealing potential flaws within the company system will most likely have a lot of customers make the switch to the competitors, so yeah, they will most likely use the fancy terms for this outage like ''software glitch'' instead of something like ''our system got hacked by a group of hackers''.

    Rogers has the worst track record when it comes to outages. Yet they're getting upset that the competition board won't allow them to buy Shaw, who also has a bad track record. This right here is proof we need more competition and choices when it comes to providers and proof that corporate greed is killing society.

      You should. Been with bell for almost 20 yrs and I can't remember no outage of this scale like rogers. It'll be a little expensive though.

    My Rogers internet service went down on Tuesday. After contacting Rogers they could only help me in a weeks times. I had no choice but to cancel my service with them as I work from home and reliable Internet is a absolute must for my livelihood. Bell #1

      It took me 2 weeks to get Cogeco to fix my broken line that was ripped off my house(and only my house) somehow. Roger's isn't available here and neither is any other cable company. Cable monopolies are a problem IMO. My d/l u/l ratio is also ridiculous. I get 1 gigabit down(which actually only amounts to 850-900 megabit in reality) and only 30 megabit up. I did the math and its approximately 1/30.

      Telus is #1, bell is just as big of a rip-off as Rogers. Although bells coverage area is the same as Telus. Telus is just alot cheaper and offers more features.

    I was one of millions affected by the 3 day Ontario power blackout in 2003 so this is nothing to cry about yet.. I learned its best to have some cash on hand..

      I remember that outage. My son had a soccer game and parents had battery operated radios listening to find out what was going on. Still have mine! At my office with bell waiting to do my radio show as no rogers at home. Guess no show today as I have not been able to connect with show personnel.

    That internet net business though, that's concerning as I am with Shaw and they have that pending sale. I know Shaw has had brief 30min to hour long scheduled outages in the middle of the night for servicing but it's never affected me.

      @@baxterg2367 well if you are a bell customer and you had an outage it wasn't nation wide. All I could find was a rock slide in Feb 2022 damaged a 3rd party Fibre optic line in BC and it affect Bell Telus Virgin and Roger's. But mobile data, texting and calls to 911, were not affected. Calls to and from landlines phones were.
      In 2020 the was an outage in the waterloo area that lasted a little under an hour. And another outage in the Kelowna and Merritt area for all networks in 2021 due to damaged Fibre optic due to extreme weather event. Was that the forest fires that burned Merritt to the ground? If so I suppose razing a city to the ground might cause utility disruptions lol
      You think if there was a nationwide outage it would have made the news like rogers outages have.

    Rogers was decommissioning Huawei telecommunications infrastructure. Something went wrong in the process, and Rogers did not have an effective contingency cutback plan in place. The Rogers technology center in Brampton (former Nortel bldg) have sent internal emails to I/T staff not to discuss any details with media or public.

    Last time this happened it was on a Monday April 19, 2021. Health official Dr. David Williams said on the Friday prior that it was going to be our last warning to stay home. Labour Minister Monte McNaughton gave the same warning. Not necessarily related to the outage, but weird.

    Too extreme. First off, Rogers is ONLY affecting 1/3 of Cdns. There is TELUS and Bell that each also own 1/3 of the market! Rogers is NOT the only player, but certainly the WORST of the 3.

      Been with all of them and Telus is by far the best when it comes to pricing/included features and network coverage. Also Telus is dirt cheap when it comes to roaming outside Canada. $5 a day and you get access to your full plan.

      ha ha you are very funny. If the 911,311 Banks, Payments, and all other services are not working, we should not blame only the provincial or Rogers. If the Government does not have a control system over them and people become victims, the blame is on the Government itself. Even in less developed countries that you do not like, state and private companies that provide service have a second backup line. And they set up backup centers that they can activate in a few hours. It shows that Government must take precautions for this kind of service.
