Welcome to Tunisia. Allow me to fill you in on some history of what you visited in this vlog. The Medina is the Old Town of Tunis. It was build in the year 698 A.D. and is considered a UNESSCO world heritage site. It is also considered as one of the best preserved Medinas in North Africa. It is full of old schools dating back to the 7th century, as wells as museums and Dars (Dar means house). Historically speaking, the medina was surrounded by walls, and you can only enter through the city's main door (the gate you showed before entering). People and merchants lived there, and the houses and shops surrounded the Palace of the Sultan (now turned into a governmental building). When the French came, they founded La ville nouvelle (the new city). Which is why the architecture of the city center resembles the French architecture. Now, the Medina stands as a monument for life during the Middle Ages in Tunisia, and how its inhabitants used to live within its small alleys and behind its adorned doors. For the monument you asked about, the one the girl with you says that it is important, that it the Qasbah square. It stands as a monument for the souls of every 'martyr', every nationalist, every revolutionary who died for the sake of our country. For the diversity of religions, while Tunisia is predominantly Muslim, the constitution grants the liberty of conscience to everyone on Tunisian soils. You can practice whatever you like. While the population is predominantly muslim (I would say perhaps 95% of the population, there are also atheists as well as practicing christians and Jews especially in Jerba. If you look for churches and synagogues, you will find many. I hope you have a pleasant trip. I would advise you to visit El Jem Collisseum, Dougga, Tataouine, if you want to discover the rich civilization that stretches over 3000 years. From Carthage to the Romans to the Vandals to the Arabs to the Ottomans, this land witnessed the ebb and flow of empires. If you want more sightseeing, I advise you to go to Bizerte, Sidi Bousaid, La Marsa, and Hammamet. If you want rich green landscapes, you can go to Jendouba's cities (Bni Mtir, Ain Drahem, Tabarka). If you want to go to the desert and meet the indigenous Amazigh (berber population) I advise you to go to Tataouine. If you want to see beautiful oasis in the middle of the desert (Tozeur, Chebika, Mides, Tamazgha, Nefta, and many others). If you crave less touristy locations and rich food, maybe hit El Kef. Again, welcome! :)
