  • Bomberman Hero is a platforming video game and the second Bomberman game for the Nintendo 64. Bomberman Hero is more advanced in terms of gameplay, as well as having more levels, bosses, weapons, and character moves. However, it lacks multiplayer and therefore focuses on the single player action. This game was available on the Wii Virtual Console service.

    Bomberman Hero review on the nintendo 64. Recorded using an Ultra HDMI modded N64 console with an Elgato game capture HD capture card using a real game cartridge.
    Does this retro nostalgic game fall into your top 5 or top 10 N64 games? What do you think if the music or soundtrack in the game? Do you prefer this or second attack , bomberman 64 or bomberman arcade ? Do you think any piece of music in the game is better than Redial? Does anyone ever read the description tab anymore? Who knows, maybe i am talking to myself. So who's looking forward to the N64 Mini Classic console?

    this game is a true classic, and to my surprise, very easy to return to in modern times due to the responsive and simple controls. Great music and interesting level design keep me coming back every few years.

    I really enjoyed both this and Second Attack when I was younger, so it's hard to say which is my all time favorite. Hero does have the more memorable soundtrack though, and I liked things like the elemental bombs and levels in Second Attack quite a bit. I guess for me they're about equal, and to this day I still wish there was another action-adventure Bomberman game (there was going to be one on the 3DS but sadly it was cancelled when Hudson went out of business).

    I got the first bomberman 64 as a christmas gift without knowing anything about it and fell in love with it pretty fast, but when a friend bought this game a while later I was at first dissapointed that it didnt have the same style of gameplay. After a while the game started to winning me over, everything about it was just so weird in a good way.
    In the end I dont know if I like the first or bomberman hero the most, but I do know that I still think about bomberman hero from time to time.
    when I discuss videogames with my friends and we come to the topic about older and newer games, what we miss about the games that came out when we were kids I always think about bomberman hero and how wierd it was.
    It is to me the perfect example of a game released on a console during the late 90's. Now so many AAA games feel the same in the same genres, but during the playstation and nintendo 64 games you had so much more to choose from, or atleast it felt like that as i was a kid at the time =)

    Although it wasn't graphically as impressive as a Banjo-Kazooie it still looks really nice nowadays and aged pretty well imho.
    I remember being engaged with this game for weeks and months. After beating the story mode and getting a high score in each stage you could unlock more stuff, e.g. a specific treasure hunt + playing as a golden Bomberman. Totally underrated gem!

    I absoloutely loved this game when it came out. I haven’t touched it in years but your review has really made me want to replay it. I was getting some serious nostalgia hits from some of the levels you showed, especially the snow levels at the end where you’re on a snowboard. I only had this and Bomberman 64 but I way prefered this as I found Bomberman 64 tricky to get the hang of.

    • @TimelessGamingUK
      @TimelessGamingUK 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Replaying it now and I think it holds up really well. It looks really bright and crisp for an N64 game. It controls pretty well too apart from the usual camera problems from that era. I really enjoy going through each level trying to collect everything as well to get the best rating. I find the levels are actually often more fun when you play through a second time. As you mentioned in your review too, the soundtrack is fantastic. For me it’s definitely in the 2nd tier of the best games on the system.

    On the draw distance issue, there is one stand-out moment I remember vividly...
    in the desert area, one stage has a foreground-to-background instead of left-to-right arrangement, and in it you ride platforms towards a temple in the background--but as you approach, it looks like the temple is being slowly formed out of sand dripping from the sky before eventually being colored in as the actual stone structure it is.
    Almost like one of those examples of a game's limitations being a strength... but that's just one stage, so.

    This is one of the best games on the system, as well as all time. Its not only wholly different from the Bomberman series, but no other action platformer is exactly like it. To find this much variation in stage design, one would have to look back to Donkey Kong Country 2 (Another of the all time best).

    I actually want to play all 3 Bomberman games on the N64 (not 4 because the 4th one is Japan only and it's hard to get that game here in the states due to it's high cost and it's in Japanese so I wouldn't understand what they are saying in the game)! The reason I want to get all 3 is because I have heard of the Bomberman games for years but have never actually played them due to me being busy with my life or me just playing the most successful games on the console like Mario 64, DK 64, Banjo Kazooie, Smash 64, Mario Kart 64, Yoshi's Story, all 3 Mario Parties, and Banjo Tooie!

    Bomberman Hero was a bold attempt to try something different, though it does feel like a mixed bag in terms of visuals, controls and a fixed camera angle, yet is kind of average as a platformer. the music is rather catchy though. Personally, Bomberman 64 is my favorite due to its unique story and adventure mode as well as a fun multiplayer.

    I thouht i was the only one that loved the OST from this game. And since i'm from Brazil not UK, you can't say it's because of what was trend at the time. I just like how the soundtrack sounds kinda "space" and experimental. Reminds me of one of the B-Daman Bomberman's for the SNES, probably same composer...

    I'd personally have to agree that Bomberman Hero is not the first game one should recommend for those looking for a so-called "true" Bomberman experience. it's got many of the same aesthetics, but the gameplay is just too different. That said, Bomberman Hero is the only Bomberman game on N64 that I actually finished after I bought it. (Admittedly this was years later after the N64 lost its relevance, but the point stands.) It's not that the other games are bad; Hero just grabs me harder for some reason. I don't think that's a coincidence.
    Good review Glenn Plant. :)

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sonicisbadazz yeah and it doesn’t have the insane spike in difficulty that many of the others had on N64 in the later stages

    I don't think it matters where you are from to enjoy certain music genres. I mean I'm an american and a metalhead but I still love this soundtrack, its just so catchy.
    As for which N64 Bomberman game I prefer? Tough call because I've only played Bomberman Hero and Bomberman 64. I enjoy Bomberman Hero for the fast-paced action platforming but I also enjoy Bomberman 64 for its more puzzle like levels. I guess I would go with Bomberman Hero because I prefer a bit more speed and skill over puzzles and strategy.

    I got this game for my birthday back when it came out. Up until a few years ago, it was also the only N64 Bomberman game I had ever played. I never liked Bomberman's voice and it always put me off of the game for some reason. I don't think I ever beat the game either. It was weirdly difficult and my skills at the time weren't super great. I remember getting to the fake final boss and never beating him. Getting a perfect 5 on all stages (especially the bosses) plus all the collectable bombs was simply out of the question for me back then too. I did get a copy of this when I started collecting N64 games years ago and I probably could finish the game finally (all 5's and all bombs) as my skills have greatly increased over the years. I'm going through a weird phase where I don't feel like playing any games right now though, so it'll have to wait...
    Bomberman Hero is one of those games for me like Sonic 3D Blast. I have a strong nostalgic connection to it, but I don't really care for the game for one reason of another. 3D Blast is a whole different story, but my distaste for Hero is seriously all because I didn't like Bomberman's voice when I was a kid...

    I think this game cemented the seed for my love of drum'n'bass, making me like that kind of music later on. But honestly, the condition to unlock the final word felt kinda stupid. In addition to finding the 24 hidden trinkets, also having to finish the game 100%? I never felt like it was a nessecity to finish the levels with a perfect score. Maybe it's time for me to go back and finish it 100%.

    I always like Bomberman 64's multiplayer the best and at the time I also thought Bomberman Hero was a nice change of pace that worked out better than I expected it to. Somehow as a kif it took me a long time to connect the game's story to Star Wars. Makes me feel kind of silly now.
