Kep is great! Take a side trip to Koh Larne Island. At the nearby National Park there is a hiking path called the Stairway to Heaven.It leads to a Buddhist Nuns' Monastery. Kep is great for Monkey Watching.Rent a bike.This area was devastated by the Khymer Rouge.Many somber reminders remain.

I agree that the lack of beach in Kep is disappointing, but if you hop on a boat for a 20min ride you can get to Rabbit Island.
Kep is a town for seafood like you said. Sihaknou Ville on the other hand is a beach town.

When i went to Kep i have to leave at 3AM and arrived at 9AM (by bus from my province Kandal - Phnom Penh - Kep ) and come back on the same day :(
