    Now in early September, what a long way the world has travelled since that day in early February. The little 3-day old princess, now over 7 months old, is almost ready to leave the natal nest to journey the vast Southern Ocean for the next few years before returning. But also herein this February footage, a large cruise vessel is obvious in the background as it leaves port to begin its voyage up the Otago Harbour passing the albatross sanctuary before reaching open seas, little knowing that within a few weeks such visits would be banned as Covid-19 spread around the globe. What joy this little princess and her two devoted parents have meantime given to the huge number of regular watchers to this Royal Albatross Cam. Thank you DOC New Zealand and Cornell University!

    Probably the most amazing thing I've seen on TH-cam in the past year. But contrary to several comments here I feel the peck to his shirt was her showing affection and trust. If she didn't want to let him weigh the chick she wouldn't have let him take it so willingly, and if she was even slightly upset she could have sliced him up in a second. This is clearly something she's used to and not even slightly bothered about. But that in itself is what's so amazing.

    • @ladyhawk
      @ladyhawk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Hello David you are correct! YRK was being affectionate and playful with the ranger and if she really wanted to bite you would know it!! The albatross are used to the rangers frequent visits and they have a strong bond of trust with them.

    Hi, can someone please accurately describe this behaviour. Is this based on trust or the albatross is still processing the events ? If this is not aggressive behaviour then what is the purpose of the clacking of the beaks ? Conversely, if this out of trust then is there some skepticism on the part of the bird ? btw beautiful to watch.

Jacinda would know it as her own. JL

    Lady Hawk, why does he have to check the baby.

    • @ladyhawk
      @ladyhawk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      The DOC rangers are performing twice daily health checks. Fly strike is a major problem at the hatching stage when the weather is hot. If flies lay maggots on the hatching egg or young chick that would quickly lead to the death of the chick without intervention.
      The rangers put peppermint oil on the nest which acts a deterrent to keep the flies away during this critical time. The chick is checked regularly for fly strike and that they are healthy and putting on weight. Death by fly strike is one of the biggest causes of chick mortality at Taiaroa Head.
