This was the first Shuttle mission to dock with the Russian Mir Space Station. Following docking on 29 June, a programme of joint biomedical investigations and logistics transfer operations was conducted over the following 5 days. In the Spacelab module more than 15 biomedical and scientific investigations were conducted in 7 different fields. Experiment samples from Mir were gathered and returned to Earth aboard Atlantis. The returning EO-18 Mir crew members also conducted a programme of exercise and prevention measures to help prepare them for the return to Earth after their 3 month mission. Undocking occurred on 3 July, shortly after the EO-19 crew had undocked their Soyuz TM and positioned the small spacecraft to photograph the departure of Atlantis. The Shuttle crew then recorded the re-docking of Soyuz before departing for return to Earth. The 8 crew members on Atlantis for the return equaled the largest Shuttle crew in history. This was the first space station crew exchange by the shuttle, the 100th US human space launch, the first and only Spacelab long module to be part of a shuttle payload docked to the space station, the largest spacecraft ever in orbit, and the first on-orbit change of a shuttle crew. One crew member, Charles Precourt, celebrated his 40th birthday in space on 29 June. The Commander, Robert Gibson, made his 5th and last flight. Charles Precourt made his second, the first as pilot. Mission Specialist Bonnie Dunbar made her 4th spaceflight and MSs Ellen Baker and Gregory Haubaugh made their 3rd flights, the former her last. The 2 Russian cosmonauts made their 3 and 1st flights respectively, Anatoly Solovyov and Nikolai Budarin.
