  • Speaker: Ms. Rachel Jansen, Senior Process Engineer at Paterson & Cooke
    About the Talk:
The 2019 failure of the Brumadinho dam in Brazil triggered an industry-wide demand for more transparency, accountability and safeguarding of people and environments from the consequences of a tailings facility failure.
In response, the Global Tailings Review published a standard in August 2020 which includes requiring consideration of alternative options to conventional tailings storage facilities, such as in-pit storage and underground tailings placement, and the application of technologies to minimize the volume of tailings and water placed in external tailings facilities. Tailings dewatering technologies, such as thickening and filtration, provide solutions to minimize stored water volumes.
    About the Speaker:
Rachel Jansen holds a Masters of Philosophy in Metallurgical Engineering from JKMRC - University of Queensland. Rachel is a senior process engineer focusing on tailings management within Paterson & Cooke’s North American practice located in Denver, Colorado.
She has been involved in mineral processing for over sixteen years within various roles, including metallurgical engineering, consulting, and project management. Rachel has field experience in South Africa, Turkey, Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, and Australia. Her experience includes tailings dewatering systems, paste backfill systems, process design, feasibility studies, circuit mass balance, model building and simulation and comminution circuit surveys for plant optimization/auditing.
